SEC says refs, timer handled jobs properly

Pat Summitt's tunnel vision was put to the test Tuesday.
All around Tennessee's women's basketball coach the rewind button was being punched regarding the controversial ending to UT's 59-58 victory over Rutgers Monday night. And she was trying to look forward to Thursday's clash with No. 7 LSU , which could decide the SEC regular-season championship.
"We have to get ready for LSU,'' Summitt said. "I hated that it (Monday's conclusion) was very controversial and got a lot of attention. But I feel like right now we have to focus on Thursday night's game."
Tip-off is 6:30 p.m. at Thompson-Boling Arena (TV: FSN).
The Internet was buzzing Tuesday with a rehash of the circumstances surrounding Lady Vols center Nicky Anosike's game-winning free throws with two-tenths of a second left. Countless replay clips were available for fans to scrutinize and ask, "What was the call? And when did the official make the call?"
The SEC released a statement on the matter.
"The Big East and SEC conference offices have been in communication throughout the day. The coordinators of officials for both leagues have spoken to the officials as well as the clock operator. The officials discharged their duties properly and there is no indication that anything improperly was done by anyone involved."
The league said that there would be no further comment on the issue.
Media outlets had their say. Several newspaper headlines weren't kind to Tennessee. The Chicago Tribune's read, "Charity at Home: Late FTs lift No. 1 Lady Vols." The San Francisco Chronicle incorporated the frozen-time-clock angle with, "No. 1 Lady Vols prevail; Time (0.2 of a second) stands still for Rutgers."
The ESPN.com poll question on its women's basketball page: Did the officials make the right call at the end of the Tennessee-Rutgers game? A story on the site recounted two other messy game endings, including the Lady Vols benefitting from a controversial foul call at the end of a 2004 NCAA tournament regional semifinal game against Baylor in Norman, Okla. That call also occurred with two-tenths of a second remaining in the game. Tasha Butts made two free throws and UT prevailed, 71-69.
The Lady Vols were tossed about in the tempest created by that call, which was strongly criticized, much like Monday's
"I hadn't even thought about that,'' said Summitt, regarding any correlation between 2004 and now.
Monday's outcome kept the phones busy in the Lady Vols' coaches office. Several calls came from irate Rutgers fans.
The ripple effect reached as far as the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll. Although Tennessee was No. 1, Rutgers received a first-place vote.
Amid the clamor, Summitt said, "I'm not worried about what's going on or said."
Summitt confirmed that she spoke with C. Vivian Stringer after the Rutgers coach finished her angry postgame press conference. Stringer had rushed by Summitt during the postgame handshakes to chase after the game officials.
"I hated what happened happened, that there was controversy'' Summitt said. "Vivian is one of my dearest friends in the profession. That's not going to change."
Stringer released a follow-up statement Tuesday regarding the game's outcome.
"The controversy at the end of the game last night at Tennessee was an unfortunate incident and Rutgers deserved to win," said Stringer. " I am saddened because my team played a hard-fought game and to have it finish in such a manner overshadows the accomplishments of two exceptional teams."
Another replay from Monday's game involved Summitt and UT senior point guard Shannon Bobbitt. The ESPN2 telecast showed Summitt blistering Bobbitt for drawing a technical foul in the second half. Bobbitt rushed up and pointed at Matee Ajavon after a foul was called on the Scarlet Knights guard.
"The response has been so positive, just in terms of what I said,'' Summitt said.
She and Bobbitt met Tuesday and watched game video of Monday's second half. They didn't zero in on UT's last possession like everyone else. They were watching the six baskets and 23.1 percent field-goal shooting (6-for-26). They were preparing for Thursday night.
"We're going right to LSU,'' Summitt said.

Questions were bound to be asked.. Was not a good situation, but one that Summitt and the team were not part of. What caused the problem should be identified and fixed so that it never happens again. I can only imagine what everyone would have been saying had it happened where Lady Vols lost the game in similiar situation.. It's water over the dam but the ripples will probably prevail for some time. Just beat LSU badly...

How do you fix human error? Robots?
Would if it were so easy.

It has come to my attention that the ref's whistle is somehow electronically attached to the clock and the clock stops when the whistle is blown. Sounds high tech and very good idea. If so, the clock stopping at 0.2 makes sense. What doesn't make sense is why, after stopping, it continued to 0.0? In any case, game over, time to get ready for the next opponent for both clubs. Good luck ladies.

Someone, a ref or the timekeeper, accidently or intentionally pushed the start button.

Our team should never put itself in a position where the game is decided by a last second shot. A team which has a 10 point lead at half time should pour it on and bury their opponent so that the game is not decided by a foul or a shot. It's all about controlling you own destiny. Wise up, team. Compose yourself. Play the game. Leave the mouthing and the chest bumping to the pros. Just FOCUS on every play, every possession. FINISH every shot. FLY back on defense. Give the fans reason to stand up for 40 minutes cheering, not standing clapping our hands for 6 minutes waiting for you to make a basket. Now here's my advice to the crowd. Get louder. Our fans need to be encouraging our team on defense and offense. They seem to get very quiet at times when the team is down. That's not fair. Listen to the men's game. Fans are into the game, on their feet cheering. We can't take plays off either. LSU is coming in here smelling blood in the water. We've shown some vulnerability. We shot 26% for 20 minutes. That will get you beat in a conference game.

The whistle was blown after the clock stopped. Something else stopped the clock. Kudos to Jimmy Hyams and Tony Basilio for having the guts to state this.

We will never be sure. There is one possible scenario that could make since though. Assuming that is was one of the referees that was out of sight of the camera that made the call prior to the stoppage (it stopped, so that is not debatable). The play obviously continued from there, so maybe the clock operator (who should have been watching the play and not the sideline ref) restarted the clock thinking it stopped by accident. The LV's were in the double bonus so it could have been called on the floor. If this were the case, the referee that made the call would know that there was 0.2 left on the clock.
We will never know. I am tired though of people saying (mostly disgruntled fans of other schools that want so badly to find something about the LV's to complain about) that someone at UT cheated. That is just stupid. Half of the people claiming injustice do not routinely watch Women's basketball, nor did they watch last nights game.

I guess Jimmy and Tony must have seen a different replay than the rest of the free world. The call apparently came from the sideline referee and there is the replay does not show that referee in screen, thus how do they know when it was called? The only video that might give is an inkling into that would be the one that UT does itself for scouting reasons bc of the angle that it is shot at.

Given all the controversy over this game, no matter if it was the right call or not; the Lady Vols will not get any close call from the zebras for a while.
Posted by ggriggs939 on February 13, 2008 at 12:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Why is the last call any more controversial than any others? Every call in a basketball game is a statement of judgment by an official and can be questioned in retrospect. Why were Rutgers' fouls in the melee during the last few seconds not called? Parker was fouled more than once while trying to shoot, either of which would have given her two shots. Apparently, the zebras had to see somebody knocked down before they were willing to blow the whistle. When that happened, they did stop the game and Nicky made the winning shots.
In my opinion, any controversy lies in the several calls that should have been made than in the final one. They affected the outcome of the game and favored Rutgers, but they have been
conveniently ignored the media hyenas.
Apparently, they are not paid to
ply their trade in a manner that is favorable to accomplishments of the VOLS' teams.
teams.

ggriggs939......you are soooooo right, every call is important and several bad calls were made against us and even against the Rutgers earlier in the game.
Not to mention we don't need no stripes to help us get the win's, especially the big ones!

Nobody mentioned the wide open layup that Rutgers missed in the final minute as well. That would have sealed the deal for them.

Next subject....LSU. KSN, stop writing about Monday...its over and we've head enough.
Rutgers will get their "human error" erased when the NCAA committee seeds them. I can promise you that there has been enough crying about this matter and Rutgers will get a higher seed than they deserve.
Mark my words and remember my post. Whatever record Rutgers finishes with, they will have a higher seed in the tourney than they should get.
Let it go and move on to the next episode. You too KSN, report something else.

Here's a conspiracy theory for you. Do you think there may be more than 3 of the clock control devices at TBA? (Just in case 1 breaks) It was the ball boy, from the tunnel with the night stick or uhhh the spare remote. Also, I wonder if you can purchase a similar device on e-bay and run the clock from the stands. (Just kidding folks... :)

yep marc_ash, with the imus controversy and now this. i'd say rutgers will get a really high seed just for the PC factor. hopefully they'll put out early.

The officials did no wrong? What a way to be No. 1 having your husband operate the clock?
Posted by Pullingguard on February 13, 2008 at 9:03 a.m. (Suggest removal)
The referee whistle being blown causes the clock to stop.. What a bunch of garbage that is.... With all the noise a whistle could not have been heard, and if that was known, maybe someone in the stands just pulled out his/her whistle and blew it to stop the clock.. Oh well... Another Point.. We always read in these comment sections, both basketball and football that UT gets a lot of bad calls, I have never read where we got a good call, but let us all be at peace now, for the clock gave UT the call that equaled the playing field for some time to come. Remember that the next time you want to complain about bad calls.
Posted by rockytop on February 13, 2008 at 9:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Pulling, have you not ready any of the articles on this subject. Please be informed before you call something "garbage". The whistle is electronically tied to the stopping of the clock. It's really high tech stuff that is being used in the pros as well as the colleges. The days of a clock operator pushing the pause button when he hears a whistle have been gone for several years. The clock operator or the refs restarted the clock because perhaps they thought it was a malfunction. When the refs huddled and asked each other, who called the foul, the ref from the outside that called it first said I did and their was .2 seconds left. People, why can't you understand that! A foul was called before time ran out. It should have been a flagrant foul but was only a double bonus situation. This would not even be an issue if the refs had called the foul on Rutgers where the player put her shoulder down, knocked Parker down and scored. No call on that. Had the Rutgers player not grabbed Nicky from behind and pulled her down, no call would have been made. Just a dumb play on the part of Rutgers. They live and die by mauling the competition (literally).

I agree the game shouldn't have even been that close, but my girl Nicky stepped up when her team and the whole state of TN was counting on her and nailed those two free throws! Way to go Nicky!

utchris - "The call apparently came from the sideline referee and there is the replay does not show that referee in screen, thus how do they know when it was called?" WRONG AGAIN MORON!! THE CALL CAME FROM THE BASELINE REF AND HE IS CLEARLY VISIBLE ON THE REPLAY AND HIS ARM GOES UP (to signal a stoppage in play) WHEN HE MAKES THE CALL - CLEARLY AT LEAST 2 SECONDS AFTER THE CLOCK "FREEZES."

Is your user name correct "THE_VOL"? It sounds like maybe you should change it to "The Rutger". Get real, this mess does not need to be put on Pat Summitt. The officials looked at the monitor, determined what they determined and that was just they way it was.
DO THE RIGHT THING.........the only right thing to do right now is everyone just "move on" and let this die down.
But bottom line, as UT Fans we need to support our team and not let this be put on Pat Summitt. SHE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS!
Our team deserved to win this game just as much as the Rutgers. The clock may have frozen at .2 but she was fouled while the clock was still going and that is what the officials seen in their monitor.
LET IT DIE...............VOLS WON!!!!!!!!!!!

gg, you are right. Every call is critical in any game. Sometimes a team will get ahead and then the refs will slack off for a while and in so doing the team behind will make a run that includes several uncalled fouls. Anosike was not knocked down, she was pulled down by her shoulders from behind. We can go back in basketball history and see the no calls at the end of games. I remember Tyrone Beaman and a block/charge call at Vandy and Dale Ellis at Ga getting mugged as he attempted the last shot. This is either a league policy or the failure of officials to officiate a 40 minute game. I don't know which but I have seen and known many officials who seem to swollow their whistles after about 39 minutes and 10-15 seconds...We expect 40 minutes from our team. Is it wrong to expect 40 minutes from officials making from $1,000 to $2,500 a game?

UconnFan, you are upset because your team is not number 1. Your team should be number 4 behind Tennessee, North Carolina, and Rutgers. A lot of prople don't like Tennessee, because they have the best program in the country. Just wait until March. That is when we will see how good Uconn, Rutgers, and Tennessee really are. because in March it is Win or go home.

THE_VOL (really?), it is not unusual for more than one ref to make a call on a given play. We can't tell from the replay which ref made the FIRST call, just because the baseline ref ALSO had his hand up. As I have said before, but will say no more, anyone who is determined to use this to trash Pat and the Lady Vol program will do so, no matter what comes out eventually. If a mistake was made, PAT didn't make it. This is certainly not the only game that was decided by a controversial call or play in the last second--I don't know of a SINGLE instance in which the benefactor of the controversial call gave back the victory. If you do, I would be glad to hear of it. I agree with pendav that this incident didn't win us any friends--NO ONE is satisfied with the outcome, but nothing can be done about it now, and Pat is perfectly correct to try to put it behind her and concentrate on the next game.

Have the officials tell us who blew the whistle and when. Maybe it took them that long to blow the whistle when Parker was being mugged by three Rutgers players and they wanted to send Anosike to the line because she hits less than 65%.
Or, they could explain that they made the call while the big gal had Anosike by the shoulder, pulling her down as she tried to get the rebound.
Either way, the game is over. We won! I, for one, would gladly review each and every play and allow us to shoot foul shots for each one missed agaist Rutgers and allow them to shoot foul shots for each call missed against us.

UconnFan: I know its hard being 2nd best to the Lady Vols and Pat but you should focus on something else. Maybe your men's team. Oh wait...we're number 4 and way ahead of you there too. Maybe you should focus on football..oh wait. Never mind. Cheer up and don't be angry. I have no doubt that someday Uconn will have the rich history of winning like the Lady Vols.

Rocky top you are so confused... Sure the whistle blew with 2 seconds left, Why? because the clock stopped at 2 seconds, stopped, dead stopped, and it had stopped prior to the foul therefore giving UT the benefit of the call... Hey, I am thrilled the Vols won, but its tainted as can be... Vols got more negative press from the game than positives other than a notch in the win column..

ENVY is a harsh taskmaster and is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Controversy strokes the public's psyche because it gives the opportunity for some to deride others and make themselves feel better,
There was, however, no controversy involved in the game. The Rutgers player fouled; the whistle blew; the clock stopped; Nicky made the shots; the Lady VOLS went ahead; the play resumed. Rutgers shot and missed; the Lady VOLS won the game.
There is a big difference between losing a big game and accepting the defeat and trying to cover your @$$
by yelling foul!
Maybe we should review the only game Rutgers has won from the Lady Vols. It was played at Rutgers,
wasn't it?
