Punter to walk on at UT

Cody Ayers, a punter from Carroll County High School in Hillsville, Va., area has accepted an offer to walk on at Tennessee, the Roanoke Times reported Tuesday.

Carroll County coach Tom Hale said that UT coach Phillip Fulmer told the 6-foot-1, 227-pound Ayers that he would have the inside track at the starting punter’s job in 2009 once starter Britton Colquitt departs.

“They want him to redshirt his freshman year,” Hale told the newspaper. “If he performs well, they want to put him on scholarship when Colquitt graduates.”

Tennessee’s coaching staff first saw him kick last summer.

“They invited him to camp and after that I was handing him a letter a week from Tennessee,” Hale said.

“He’s one of the strongest kids on the team,” Hale added. “He bench-presses over 340 and squats 400.”

Ayers has been working under the tutelage of Doug Blevins, a former NFL kicking coach with the Miami Dolphins.

After he punts, he can stay out there and play some D-Line.

I highly doubt this guy can be an sec dl at 6'1 227.

well, at least we can count on our punter being able to tackle someone on a return if need be.

I wonder who had the connections in Virginia to find this kid? Looks like our friends from Richmond might have been in on this. Just an observation. Neither positive nor negative.

What is his punting average? I could care less about his size, etc. tell me some numbers.

That was actually a joke. I've just never heard of a punter who could bench 340.

It doesn't give his kicking stats in the Roanoke paper either.

Put about 100 pounds more on him and put him in the trenches, and I would care more.

That said, welcome aboard. With the lack of D-tackles, I hope you have a cannon for a leg to pin folks deep!

And when they said he could bench 340, they actually meant he could bench 170 pounds 2 times.

if the kid benches 340, he cna overpower a lot of 300-lb linemen....what a great sotry that would be, the DT/Punter at, say, 250lbs ofr college weight.
PICURE THIS: some lanky, speedy db comes rushing in on a punt block; our boy holds the football in one hand, and does a seim move on the db that sends the db about 20 yards behind the play. The 90-yard punt then sails on down the field....

General Fritter...he's a punter not a kicker and will be redshirted next year. So maybe he can help get some punts downed inside the 5 during our national championship run.....that is when the offense is unable to score.

General Fritter, I join you in welcoming the newest walk-on. Where do we rank in the walk-on signees? Are we ahead of Memphis St and the banana slug college?

Dupree came by and asked if I would speak to the neighbor about borrowing the brindle pit bull for two hours. He said he only wanted him to bite someone in the a## for about 5 minutes. He promised he would bring him back with two cans of Vienna's. Plain, not bbq sauce. I told him, ok.

you know....we could certainly use a Virginia connection....Frank Beamer has done some pretty good things building primarily on in-state recruits....Michael Vick, legal problems aside, was the best college football player I've ever seen at any position--he's from Newport News, Deangelo Hall is from Chesapeake, Jon Dunn is from Newport News, Jake Grove is from the Lynchburg area, Jeff King is from Pulaski, Jonathan Lewis & Ernest Wilford are from Richmond, Ronyell Whitacre & Aaron Rouse are from Norfolk, Darryl Tapp is from Portsmouth, & Jimmy Williams & Shane Graham are from Hampton----all those guys are NFL players (except for Vick, at the moment) and all from VA----I'm not suggesting we can derail Beamer's hold on the Old Dominion, but we could certainly take a stab at stealing some of the talent.

No Fritter. It's actually the KNS's fault since they ignore their own rules that are posted below.

"You agree not to post comments that are off topic, defamatory, obscene, abusive, threatening or an invasion of privacy. Violators may be banned."

Those rules are ignored 90% of the time. Maybe they've kicked a few dim bulbs off but all they do is sign up as somebody else and change their moniker.

Bring back the pay site!! At least, the $4.00 a month kept the trolls from other schools off.

Pleasegetridof - can you please tell me what someone that gradutated 7 years ago getting arrested has to do with the program now? As far as I know Stevens never got into trouble at UT. If anything you may have proved what a great job on Stevens that Fulmer and Staff did during his time here!! That is the absolute dumbest remark you have ever made! I suppose if I ever get arrested I should be able to blame it on Mr Pemberton at West High School and the environment that school had me in?? Or how about my Calculus professor at Tenn Tech?? That remark takes the cake!! Maybe blame Coach Chrisman for the partying I did?? I usually laugh at remarks you make, but show a little common sense!!

Dfreeman- Your response is the one that is idiotic. You spent 1 hour a day at the most with those people and they did not set curfews for you. Fulmer is suppose to be a father figure for these out of state blue chips and teach them right from wrong. The University of Tennessee is turning into the new Miami. There is no denying that. The discipline of coach Fulmer is a joke. I know former players personally that can support that.

Anyways, I just was letting the orange kool aid drinkers know of some breaking news that will be coming out soon. That is it. Settle down and stay off the Red Bull. Go enjoy Vandy spanking Kentucky like I am right now.

General Fritter, is a General not responsible for the actions of his troops? Is a Fire Chief not responsible for the training of his men? Is a McDonald's manager not responsible for the consistancy of the Big Mac?

Its called a sarcastic analogy and the point is a large portion of Fulmer's help (Cutt) was/is gone and kids will take advantage of practically any advantage they get.

Maybe you should be called Lieutenant if you can't see that.

The new guys from VA had nothing to do with this walkon punter. The article said they saw the kid, invited him to camps, and then started sending him letters. All of which happened before the Va 2 came on board. Also you guys are only seeing what the KNS is posting about UT criminal problems. Penn State has had 9 issues over the last 2 months (4 booted off team), Indiana just had 3 arrests, Mizzou had 4 hoops players suspended and one booted. Every school experiences this crap. 99% of the junk in these kids brain is brought to UT from where they come from. You can take the kid out of the hood, but you can't take the hood out of the kid. Its a shame, but eahc player is responsible for their own actions. CPF can't babysit 24/7.

Just a guess, but I think Cptn Fritter and TDTN are same person. I kind of miss the mexican Ole' TDTN. Welcome back. Go Vols!

vol1994 - "This guy is from my home town, roanoke VA. Of course I haven't lived there since I transferred to UT in 92. anyway, My inlaws live there as well as some good friends. I will try to find the skippie on this guy, course he is just a punter but still.."

vol1994 - I bought a great hunting dog in Virginia. Of course, he died about 30 years ago. I'll also try and get the skippie. What is skippie bty? Did you mean skinny or this a Virginia thang?

Rok_Etop - Why did you say such a thing? I'm insulted. That Touchdown character is everything that was wrong with this board. I hope he never comes back. His comments seldom had any real substance and were negative and disrespectful to Coach Philip Fulmer. We are all better off without him and CRVol.

pdhuff - thanks for the memories. Ah, Jim Bob Cooter. What a great QB. I still remember him reading the offensive calls from our former great OC, Mr. Randy Sanders, to steal the game away from the Cats. Cooter will always be a fan favorite.

Rok_Etop--i am so glad someone else saw all of those reports besides me and brought it to the attention of this board. You would think, from reading some of the posts on here, that UT was the only school that had problems. there was also a report of a TCU player that had been accused of rape. of course, that is not nearly as serious as a player yelling in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Posted by General_Watermelon on February 13, 2008 at 9:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

jimr07 - I agree with you, but waiving one's arms and yelling at the top of one's lungs can draw attention from the police. I've never tried this personally, but I had a friend that once did. They allow him to walk outside at least twice a day, he takes lots of pills, and he gets icecream sandwitches at the end of the day if he is good.

i cannot believe the number of negative comments about a walk on punter. what is with you guys. you don't know anything about him, and, quite frankly, do not know why a comment would be made about him.
General--my point was that there was more comment about the yeller than there was about a rape accusation. there were two more schools recently that was cited by si.com that were not reported on KNS. I guess they figure only tennessee players are worthy of mention.

it would be easier to say what i liked about him. nothing.

KEEP TDTN OFF

Obviously the way the KNS is deleting Fritters posts, he will be joining his alter ego TDTN in the land of banishment soon. Same guy!! BTW, Indiana Hoops in trouble because coach is illegally recruiting again. Stay away from Our Pearl IU!!

If anybody is interested, and we ALL should be because he’s a Vol now, you can get a better understanding of him at the following link-

http://www.thecarrollnews.com/article...

Looks like this kid had several offers including Colorado, Virginia Tech, Nebraska, Penn State, and Michigan State but chose to WALK ON at Tennessee.
I don't care if he’s a walk on, a punter or what ever. All I know is that he chose to make a COMMITMENT to the VOLS and we need to respect him and be thankful that he cared enough to walk on with us instead of signing for a scholarship with one of the other schools. He's A Vol and He's One Of Us Now! Looks Like He and His Family Are Excited To be one! We Should Be just As Excited To Have Him Be In The Big Orange Family.
Welcome To Big Orange Country, Cody!

Thanks for the link Hacksaw! Quite a story! This kid is happy to be going to K'town, Fulmer is happy to have him, everything is beautiful! Welcome to the Volunteer Nation young man.

Two interesting things about that article:

1. UT won him over because of UT has a Field Turf Mgt major (take that Keith Wells!)

2. John Michaels is our kicking coach. Don't remember reading that on any KNS article. Is that the reason he was hired or the guy that got stuck with it?

Pleasegetridof, your agenda is showing again. Most of us have learned to ignore it but trying to connect Stephens' problem to Phil Fulmer is especially ludicrous. Where I come from it's called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY and when somebody screws up that badly, it's on them and nobody else. Of course, that term is a foreign concept to a lot of people these days.

Savageorange, thanks for the other sites. They're looking better all the time.

KingsportVol - what do you like about TDTN? He never had anything good to say about the Vols, the coaches, or even the cheerleaders for that matter.
He was rude and violated every rule on this board. He even made some up they hadn't considered.

Posted by General_Watermelon on February 13, 2008 at 6 p.m. (Suggest removal)

So what if he is a walk on. He wants to wear the Orange man. Give him your support. Nebraska flourished with these kind of walk ons. I see National Championship in 2008 baby. Fulmer will hold the Sears Trophy. Rock on!

General whatever- If you do not have anything worth saying please refrain from posting.
Some may or may not care about my post which is fine kid but I have the right to make a comment. I gave accuarte information throughout the recruiting period and others thanked me..

I do apologzie for my typo on the word, skippy. However, I think most realized, as you did, what I meant.

You are probably the same guy who was banned from the site a few days ago but now using a different name.

I hope your life gets better as it must be miserable to only receive enjoyment by ridiculing others.
Get a life!!

Sorry KingsportVol, and I mean no disrepsect to you Sir, but I agree with jimr07 on this one. We are all better off without the naysayers on this board, especially TDTN.

Hacksaw, Thanks for the link. First question: I wonder if the kicking coach, Doug Blevins, is a younger brother or cousin of the center, Mike Blevins, who played between Coach Fulmer and Chip Kell? If so, it is a testament to the relationships CPF has made through the years--I don't remember Doug Blevins' career on the Hill. Colliervol, please don't leave this site! Your postings are among the names I look for when I'm scanning this site. Some of the posters are just petty, bickering malcontents, with nothing better to do than spew their waste, much like the truck hauling porta-potties that passed me on the way to work this morning. (I didn't stay close behind it to see how much it would spray on my windshield--I backed off!) How many days to Spring Practice? I believe that starts before the Final Four! Go Football (and Basketball, and Lady Basketball) Vols! SAVol

Good morning all, I am new to the group...UT Alumni 1998, sports broadcasting major....getting a punter to walk on is nice but we need some serious help on d line in next years recruiting class, I saw a lot of your comments over the last couple months and I agree stars for recruits are sometimes overrated, I am in western pa so any questions on pa recruits you can ask me, I follow the high school scene a lot so just ask, my email is chadkrolconsulting@hotmail.com if interested

Posted by General_Watermelon on February 15, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

UTVOLSCK - So you can tell us about the ones in PA that got away? Cool!

Posted by GoVol on February 15, 2008 at 5:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Create and awesome offense so that we don't need a top-notch punter - please!

Posted by pdhuff on February 15, 2008 at 5:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

UTVOLSCK- you are already bringing way too much insight as far as d-line goes. You might be akin to Gen Fritter, myself, greervol etc. wailing in the dark. Many think we need Wrs, OL etc.

I feel we need to hold teams under 375yds per game. Games are still won in the trenches. But what do I know, I wear bib overalls and just got back from a 3500 sq ft barn with a lab and a beagle. Did stop by the creek, though.

Sermon about over, I feel there is no excuse for not being a BCS team with the $$$$$ Tenn has. Any questions, address them on ol' sjt18.

I know what's holding us back, but I'll defer to Gen Fritter to handle that. Welcome.

Posted by UTVOLSCK on February 15, 2008 at 10:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree with you fritter, not much chance to get pa recruits, Alexander was an ok talent in high school but its not like we don't have 20 athletes on the team already, Had a chance with Pryor if not for Cut leavin and honestly the speed factor and playing time questions are always raised by these guys up here. And yes Foolmore, Dr. Swan did teach me, that was good though.

This kid is legit. My fiance's family is very close friends with his family, I've watched him play a couple of times, this past season I seen him kick a 71 yd punt in a game at Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield, WV against NYG RB Ahmad Bradshaw's old HS, Graham.

There are other kids there right now that are just as good, just as ready and you haven't heard about them yet...and who knows, this may be the time they get their break.

Seems like a pretty good time to be walking on as a punter at UT.
