NORMAN, Okla. — Women’s Basketball Coaches Association president Sherri Coale expressed hope Tuesday night that officials could figure out what caused a clock malfunction in the final seconds of a marquee game the previous night and prevent it from happening again.
Top-ranked Tennessee escaped with a 59-58 win against No. 5 Rutgers on Monday night when the clock momentarily stopped with 0.2 seconds left, and a foul allowed the Lady Vols’ Nicky Anosike to hit the game-winning free throws. Replays showed it took an extra 1.3 seconds for the clock to expire, allowing the foul to be called before the final buzzer.
“I just think it’s a really, really tough way for such a great basketball game to end. It’s one of those that you can’t escape the controversy of it. You just can’t,” said Coale, who is Oklahoma’s coach. “I’m not sure what the right answer is, but I’m sure the officials are trying to figure it out.”
Coale said she didn’t think the WBCA had any control over a review of the game, and she didn’t know if there was anything the association could do. She said she had been “insulated” Tuesday while preparing for the 10th-ranked Sooners’ game against No. 20 Texas A&M and hadn’t been able to keep up with developments.
“I have not talked to anybody formally, but I believe that clock management is a correctable error and they could have gone to the monitor,” Coale said. “I don’t know enough about the situation.”
The Southeastern Conference, which counts Tennessee as a member, issued a statement that a review of the game showed “no indication that anything improperly was done by anyone involved.” An official from the Big East, Rutgers’ conference, said that when officials reviewed the final seconds on a courtside monitor, they were apparently unaware that the clock had momentarily stopped.
Coale said she didn’t think the NCAA tournament selection committee would hold the controversial loss against Rutgers when it prepares seedings for the bracket next month.
“Maybe the officials get a grasp on whatever happened and they make sure that it doesn’t happen again,” Coale said. “At least it’s not in the NCAA tournament where your season is over. If there is a silver lining, perhaps that’s it.”

There is no remedy for a whistle which stops play
in any sport except to go on from the point at which the whistle blew. In this instance, of course, it depends on whose ox is being gored. Do you suppose C Vivian would be so adamant if Rutgers had been the beneficiary?
Rutgers fouled; the whistle blew and stopped the clock like it's supposed to do; the foul was assessed; Nicky shot the foul shots; the Lady VOLS won the game; LET IT REST!!!
The zebra crew was a mix of SEC and Big East referees and they apparently agreed on the call.
That was most likely in the Lady VOLS' favor, because the SEC has an animus with Tennessee and probably would not have called the foul. Somebody certainly missed several by Rutgers during the game which would have made the final play of little note.
Despite the best efforts and level of technology, when humans and machines are involved, there will be a glitch, just like Murphy's Laws say; but then, O'Rourke's Tenet says Murphy was an optimist.

Clock-gate? So this is a conspiracy now? One clock goof in a sea of bad calls against the Lady Vols over the last ten years? Has anyone checked with the Pope to get his take on this? We need to see the Dalai Lama's opinion as well.

This topic is getting as old as Clemens and steroids. The fact is Anosike got TACKLED with .2 seconds left on the clock. She then stepped up and NAILED two free throws to WIN the game. Clutch. It's a shame this controversy is overshadowing Anosike's great effort. Marquee game, national TV and she slammed the door. Just like a damn Senior is supposed to do.

If we investigate the clock, we need to investigate the no call on the obvious charge late in the game. If we investigate the no call, then we must investigate every call made in the game. If we investigate every call in the game, will we not indict officals at every level? If we indict officals, are we not questioning the judicial system of America? And if we question the judical system, are we not turning our backs on the American way of life?
Ladies and gentlemen, I can't sit here and let Sherri Coale question America! Did we just sit here when the German's bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And we're not gonna sit here now! Who's with me? Toga Party! ;-)
(my apologies to the writers of Animal House)

I'm with you mtnvol. Ask not what America can do for you. Ask what difference Sherri Coale's opinion makes.

The clock stopped before Anosike was tackled. The refs goofed by not noticing it had stopped. However, their ruling is final. They could be reprimanded for not noticing but the result will not be changed (see Oklahoma-Oregon last fall in football, see Colorado-Missouri and the fifth down). Unless somebody fesses up that they hit a button when they shouldn't have, this is a dead issue.

mdvol I didn't know that Nicky was under curse as a senior. You said she was _amned d. Oh maybe you were saying that as a senior she is supposed to set the good example and close the door on Rutgers. I chose to say it in a way that my vocabulary or potential lack of one was not exposed. GO LADY VOLS!!! Beat the Lady Bengal tiggers from LSU!!!

Here's the deal: Humans are not perfect; neither are the tools they create. Malfunctions happen. I found it ironic that at the men's UT-LSU game on Saturday, the officials had to turn off the device that stopped the clock when they blew their whistles, as it was malfunctioning. Things like this happen. I can't imagine an NCAA official NOR the Lady Vols clock operator being biased and throwing the game. I'll wager that within the next year the LVs will lose a game due to some similar error. It all comes out in the wash.
And, hey! Once March gets here, it's a whole new season anyway. Even if Rutgers were to loose every one of their remaining games, they're going to the Big Dance. If UT and Rutgers meet in the tourney, I doubt Vivian Stringer is going to let her players loaf through a horrible shooting slump by the Lady Vols like she did Monday night; likewise, I don't think Pat's going to let her girls blow a big lead and a dominating first-half performance. (And, after Pat's scathing-and-yet-almost-prophetic assessment of her behavior, I certainly don't see Bobbitt getting a T for taunting, EVER again!)

My question is why call a game in the first half that if you squeezed you got a foul to the no call, lower your shoulder knock a player back 3 feet later in the game? The foul calling in the game was inconsistent at best. Almost every player on the court stopped when Candance was knocked back but it received no call. So if it had then the end of the game might have been different. I am tired of announcers, coaches and others complaining about fouls being called at the end of games. The game is 40 minutes long, and refs are supposed to call fouls the whole game if they are committed. If it is a foul at 5:00 on the clock, it is a foul at .01 on the clock. The fact is you can see the Rutgers player begin to pull Nickie down with more than .2 seconds on the clock. In my mind the foul not called would have put this game in just as much controversy as it is now. Why didn't the President of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association president address the blatant no call foul too? It is a harmful to game as clock-gate.

brownsville Vol must not be old enough to see an R rated movie yet. It's called ANIMAL HOUSE and it stars either Jim Belushi or that Al Quaida guy they keep showing on the news. It's almost 30 years old so its definitely not on Blu-Ray.

WD40plusVol, Thanks for injecting some unbiased common sense into this discussion. It's telling that outside of Tennessee the overwhelming sentiment from writers and pollsters is that the ending to the game was tarnished by incompetent officiating. Moreover it is also clear that among the three officials and the scorekeeper, someone is not being truthful. It appears that UT's clock system doesn't indicate who stops or starts the clock, an option that is provided in the newer versions of this same system. It probably makes sense to invest in that to keep the individual officials more accountable.
The key to remember here are there are correctable and uncorrectable situations in a game. This is clearly one that was correctable, but the officials blew it by never consulting with the official scorer or using a stopwatch to actually handtime the final seconds while watching on video.

We won, they didn't, nuff said.
Can't wait to meet Rutgers in the Elite 8 - my quess. Let's see if they hit 52% from the field in the second half. Let's see if Tennessee shoots 26% for the second half. Let's see if Rutgers is truly a 2nd half team or if Tennessee is truly a 40 minute team. My money says it's not close - LV all the way.

mtnvol, touche, perfect comment to follow all the nonsense. Iwonder if anyone has interviewed Don Imus yet for his take, or part in this conspiracy/coverup going on in Big orange Country!! (couldnt resist one silly comment)
Let the Vol haters run themselves ragged, we have tough game tomorrow in conference, and hope the girls stay healthy and continue to improve.
When youre at the top for so long and stay there not only in ability and wins but character, people love to hate you, lets remind them that alot that goes on inwomans basketball today in college is owed to Coach Summitt and people wanting to be like UT!

Old news! Geeze KSN, enough already. The game happened on Monday and we've heard all we need to about this. Not even ESPN is covering it anymore so let it rest.
Can you maybe give us an LSU preview instead. Geeze.

Screw Sherri aka "the poodle" Coale. She admitted she doesn't know anything about the situation. Just a sound bite jumping on the bandwagon like our local and national anti-Vol press.
mcbrimm, something smells real bad, oh its you pitiful loser. Your life must really suck. Where is your kentucky buddy airforceone and his dribble today? What an ugly beat down.

I think Congress should investigate. Spend millions of tax dollars to find the truth, fire everyone involved, get a whole new set of coaches and players, and new officiating crew from the former Yugoslavia, and re-play the game in
Greenland where no one cares anyway. We won, get over it!!

I'm to the point of saying this;
the clock controversy doesn't happne if rutgers does not foul at that point. If it is 'messed up' as some say it is, then it is no different than any other messed-up call in a game (as cited about a billion times, the shoulder into Parker's stomach).
I'm not sure how all this works, but used to be yoiu could get technicals BEFORE a game, as in dunking in warmups, or having the wrong player take the court after the starters are given to the scoreres. I watched games over the years where FT's were shot prior to the game starting. Not that anyone cares, but my logic throws this in the same category: anosike was intentionally fouled, and fouled hard.
Rutgers can gripe and gripe, but if they don't foul, the clock runs out and they win.
Posted by lnbadger320 on February 13, 2008 at 5:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)
i agree mparker, we get killed underneath game after game and we never get the calls. that rutger's player pushed parker out of the way and made that layup. that should have been an offensive foul. she doesn't make the basket and the game is changed. the game is over, get over it.
Posted by pearlific on February 13, 2008 at 5:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)
why is everyone (including stringer) ignoring the FACT that her player grabbed anosike intentionally at the end of the game? the fact she nor anyone else knew how much time was left is irrelevant. it was a dumb foul! if i was coaching rutgers i would direct all my energy to my team that made a stupid play!

Sherri Coale -- Spoken like a coach who has lost to the Lady Vols in the past. Someone once said that if you don't know anything about a specific situation, it is probably best that you not comment on it.
How long do you think the Rutgers team will keep this chip on their shoulder and believe that the entire world has some kind of conspiracy against them?
Posted by faithfulvol on February 13, 2008 at 6:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Absolutely right pearlific......Stringer and the Rutgers should be focusing on what is ahead just like Summitt said she was. She made the statement that when her and Bobbitt met on Tuesday in regards to the Technical foul that They watched The 39 minutes before the .2 seconds. It is quite obvious Stringer has been too busy making press conferences about "the poor pitiful Rutgers". Summitt is not gonna let this ignorance get in her way she is gonna focus and Thursday night!
Go Vols Beat Ark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Lady Vols Beat LSU and let's show TN haters what Lady Basketball is all about!

Games are decided on the foul line.
If a referee has any bias it is to have a game, over-with or to have the call versus no-call NOT decide the result.
If I were the referee looking at the clock and watching for when the foul that WAS called, actually happened, putting an iffy shooter at the line (instead of CP) and hoping to let NA or overtime settle it would have been tempting.
On some playgrounds, you have to win by two, and on some playgrounds, close calls are do-overs. Hoping for overtime is as close to a do-over as referees are allowed.

Lot's of opinions. Lot's of missed and made calls. The clock SHOULD have stopped if a whistle blew, which apparently is exactly what happened. It was hard under the basket All night. Rutgers got a tough break. No robbery demonstrated here. Doubt it could be, but could never convince Rutgers. Every "powerhouse" fan has a whole raft of painful "shouldn't have been" losses and extremely fortunate memories. Great win Tennessee, Rutger's played well enough to win. If there had been no whistle, a lot of Tennessee fans would be up in arms about the no calls.
Posted by cgbtn on February 14, 2008 at 9:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)
The issue is not why the clock stopped: it stopped because a foul was called. The question is, "Why did the clock restart?" If the clock had remained stopped at .2 second, there would be no debate.
