As it turns out, former University of Tennessee wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor got a new title and possibly an increase in salary to leave for Oklahoma State. However his job description remains the same.
Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy completed his staff, announcing the promotion of Gunter Brewer to co-offensive coordinator and the hiring of a new defensive line coach.
The promotion of Brewer, one of Gundy's original hires when he became the Cowboys' coach, had been expected. Brewer, who had been the receivers coach and passing game coordinator, now will work primarily with quarterbacks.
Gundy hired another co-offensive coordinator, Taylor, in December. Taylor will work with the Cowboys' wide receivers. He and Brewer will fill the role vacated by Larry Fedora, who now is coach at Southern Miss.
Gundy said Glenn Spencer, an assistant at Duke the past three seasons, will be the Cowboys' defensive line coach. Before joining the Duke staff, Spencer spent three seasons as an assistant at Georgia Tech and was coach for three years at West Georgia.
Assistant Doug Meacham, who works with tight ends, received the title of passing game coordinator, while Joe Wickline, who works with the offensive line, now has the title of running game coordinator.

So Troop left the best conference in the land to go to an also-ran "Medium 12" school and do the same job. Think he wishes he was still on Rocky Top?
Titan writes:
Sad. Are we thinking that "I AM A MAN" was not totally forthcoming when he hired Troop?
MrKiffin writes:
Doesn't that make his move to Oklahoma St. a lateral move, which is against his contract?
weisgarber2003#313889 writes:
Yeah, Trooper should have, "stayed the course," but maybe he was thinking of longer term job security, something that might be in short supply pretty soon........for more than the assistants.
TommyJack writes:
BigSid: I think that's why they called him the "co-coordinator"...to circumvent the rule.
I think his wittle feewings were hurt when CPF didn't show any interest in him being THE o/c.
TNfaninMS writes:
SOOOOOO let me get this straight. Trooper left to become an "oc"/wide receivers coach at OKLAHOMA STINK i mean STATE. What is the deal, is anyone else really pissed off about this? So basically trooper got SCREWED and now we dont have him. THIS sucks
thesavageorange writes:
Regardless of title, he did get a raise.I do hope Troop finds his way back to where he belongs someday.Yeah, him and Al Wilson both.

Seems to me that if there wuz a screwin, it wuz self-inflicted.

It's ok Taylor, you'll be "40 YEARS OLD" before you get your shot, but maybe do a little more research before you make your next move.
pdhuff#552644 writes:
Perhaps ol' Trooper felt he need a little different credentials to wear on his sleeve. Garner left for the $$$$. Both were closers.
If you're are the lead sled dog, the view never changes.

Okie St is closer to his family in Cuero, TX.

pdhuff, the quote is, Unless you're the lead sled dog, the view never changes.
Good points though.
Trooper did a nice job for UT, but he's history so now to quote some of our more astute posters.
YAWN!
FlaVol2 writes:
Trooper is a good coach, he just needs more miles on him to hone his skills. I hope Coach Fulmer keeps him in mind for the future.
CoverOrange writes:
Trooper wante to stay here but he also wanted a career path which Phil wasn't offering. Better he went to Ok St than Duke.
Hope he wasn't suckered in with the title. Deputy assistant to the assistant for the deputy.
Volalumnus writes:
I guess I am missing the point, but isn't this how it was advertised to start with?

No surprise
pdhuff#552644 writes:
FWB Vol,3:02 true, my bad, but at least the lead dog isn't named C. Moore Butts.

I wish Troop nothing but the best...as should all of you. And hopefully he'll be back one day to recruit some blue-chippers for the Big Orange!
nicksjuzunk#646117 writes:
I wish Trooper the best,
He clearly got the shaft and did us no wrong by leaving for what he felt was a good career opportunity. It sucks that it is now like this and I wish he could bail and come back.
GerryOP writes:
All Fulmer had to do was make Troop feel wanted. Remember the KNS interview where Fulmer was asked "Have you talked to Taylor yet?" Fulmers response was "No." KNS asked if Fulmer intended to talk to Taylor. Fulmer's response was "Yes." And all of this was AFTER Taylor was offered the job at Okie State! C'mon Phil, you let Garner go and now you let Trooper go. Me thinks Fulmer has no intentions of being Caesar on the Ides of March. He knows what he did to Majors!
As is obvious now, Troop was the heart of UT football recruiting ... and ... the Chief is now trying to figure how to plug the holes in the defense. Hopefully the Chief will solve the dilemma ... after embarrassing losses to UCLA and the Crocs.

when are you people gonna wake up and realize that 'troop' was highly overated, his coaching ability was very average and that is why he only can get dead end jobs like this one (and baylor)
glad he's gone, we dont need anymore 'jumpin and chest bumpin' and need to be rid of these thugs he helped recruit....the program has become an embrassment.
Titan writes:
orangebass - can't agree with your comment - I think the wide receivers improved considerably under Trooper. I'm not a huge chest bumpin kind of guy but the young kids go for it. He obviously was a great recruiter and related well to the guys.
Displaced_Vol_Fan writes:
Are you crazy orangebass? Overrated? Let's see, when he coached the RB's, they had the best year in 4 or 5 years. Then he moves to WR and they have an excellent year in a year that WR was supposed to be down. Overrated? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think you're wrong and have to disagree.
However, it does look like the KNS is passively agressively laughing at him.

Has anyone given any thought to Troopers leaving was the surly attitude of John Chavis toward Trooper. That was pretty well know after Fulmer gave him a promotion and raise higher than other assistants... Sometimes a person just wants to move on and get some fresh air in the lungs... Probably what Trooper wanted, for he had been around K Town long enough..
cjraney writes:
Taylor left for the co-OC job which is what he still is. The other co-OC, Brewer, will also be the QB coach. Taylor will be co-OC and WR coach. Not too hard to understand really and is exactly what was stated when he left.
anthony writes:
Phil
Fulmer still gets more resppeect than the other sec coaches. They are on hot seats, Fulmer is secure. Anybody, and i mean anybody that gets a win against Tennessee is lucky to do so , and grateful to get out of Knoxville or the game with a W. Phil is a winner and he knows it. And he plays like one. If he'd won about 5 to 10 ;more games, he be another Knute Rockne.

When will the KNS stop printing stories about other programs who have former TN coaches. This is not gocowboys.com or goduke.com. I am tired of reading stores about Duke's recruiting class or the staff being completed at OKSt. Cut and Trooper are gone and are not associated witht the vols anymore, stop writing stories about them. Maybe we can have them do a report card on Monday's about the Duke and Ok. St. games.

Hiresanders, when did knute rockne coach? 1920s and 30s? Graduated 100% of his players? Cite your source for that, buddy. I bet they scheduled a few slippery rocks and butlers too.
