The Tennessee men's golf team shot a 3-over-par 291 to stand in second place after the first round Sunday of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational played at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
The Vols are one stroke back of leader Alabama.
"We played well today," Tennessee coach Jim Kelson said. "We dropped a few strokes toward the end, but there are some tough holes at the end of this course. This is a good tournament for us and we always seem to play well here."
Pepperdine is four strokes behind in third with UCLA and Charlotte tied for fourth at 7 over.
Sophomore David Holmes and senior Philip Pettitt paced the Vols, tying for eighth each with an even-par 72. Senior Charlie Ford (73) is tied for 17th, followed by junior Chris Paisley (74) at 24th and freshman Robin Wingardh (75) at 32nd.
