Men's golf team ties for third
The No. 10 University of Tennessee men's golf team finished tied for third Tuesday at 20-over-par 886 at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach. Fla.
The Vols shot 7-over 295 at Sawgrass Country Club in the final round. No. 2 Alabama defeated No. 3 UCLA by four shots.
UT's Charlie Ford (70) tied for 13th at 219; Philip Pettitt (74) was 15th at 220; David Holmes (76) tied for 21st at 222; and Chris Paisley (75) and Robin Wingardh (80) tied for 62nd at 231.
"We had a mediocre week overall as a team but there are some bright spots," Tennessee coach Jim Kelson said. "We were competitive even though we didn't necessarily have our best games. We proved we can win these golf tournaments if we are on our game."
In other UT news:
n Jeneba Tarmoh of the Lady Vols was named SEC Track and Field Freshman of the Week. Tarmoh had three career-best times in her four races at the Tyson Invitational. She was second in the 200-meter dash (23.27) and ninth in the 60 (7.34). It's the fourth time this season a member of the Lady Vols has won the award.
