Webb School star Glory Johnson and four other Tennessee Lady Vols signees have been named McDonald’s All-Americans and will play in the all-star basketball game on March 26 in Milwaukee.
Johnson, Amber Gray, Alicia Manning and Shekinna Stricklen will play for the East team. Alyssia Brewer will play for the West.
“I thought when we closed out that class it was going to be a special group,’’ UT coach Pat Summitt said. “Right now they are getting the recognition and next year they’ll have to step up and play a lot of minutes for us, but I am proud for all of them.”
Johnson, Gray, Brewer and Stricklen also will play in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association high school all-star game April 5 in Tampa.
Bass Hurt: UT’s other signee, point guard Briana Bass from North Central High in Indianapolis, suffered what her father, Tim, called a left knee sprain and missed North Central’s 57-38 loss to Ben Davis in the state tournament last week.
Tim Bass told The Indianapolis Star on Wednesday this his daughter has no swelling in her left knee and no surgery is planned.

I am proud of our furture Lady Vols with one exception---Maybe playing with lots of All Americans will make those who are ARROGANT realize their are others and their are people whom are better. The Lady Vols need to work as a TEAM not one man show ....this player definitely thinks the world revolves around her.

Are you referring to Candace as the world revolves around me player? Future will still be bright with talent being coached by Coach Summmit.
Tee writes:
No, I was referring to incoming Freshman from TN. Coach Summit is great and I am sure she can change some attitudes if need be!
Go Candace! Go Lady Vols!

Many exceptional high school players thinks the team revolves around them, but normally a couple of All-Star games and their freshman pre-season makes them realize they are now on a different level. Speed of the game and the ability of the defenders increase on the college level. Many high school coaches are to blame for the I the best attitudes when they have outstanding players because they create the team around the player. College is different, you have a team full of great players and schemes are designed for each player or position.

Don't worry about big egos on the Lady Vols. They get right-sized in short order. If you don't believe it, just ask Sadie Gatewood Wiley.

I think the player in question will be okay when the time comes. She has a former LV as her high school coach and has attended camps at UT in the past. She having been raised in Knoxville should be well aware of the standards Pat Summitt holds each player to, be they the star or walk ons.

DEAR KNS:
Actually there are 5 UT commits on the girls All American Team. Alicia Manning is on the team as well. Way to go.

Nevermind, I'm talking about McDonald's AA Team. That's the main one anyway. Oops.

Tee, you are a idiot and know absolutely nothing about basketball. Your little daughter must go there. When your a talent in high school, you are the best player in all your games, so she may have the big head, who cares she deserves it and has worked her tail off. Go get another chocolate bar and shut-up. You need to shut your mouth and go crawl back under your rock. You should be ashamed of your ignorant post.

Thanks for the revision.

Called a friend of mine who is a former college scout. She scouted the girl in question on multiple occasions and says those comments has no merit. What that person did say is that the young lady is a freakish breed of an athlete. Remember, she could just as easily be on the UT Track team. She swept all the track sprints last year in TN.

Ummm, you guys are obviously talking about GJ. Does someone think she'll be an issue next year. Will she be in the starting 5 next year you think?

If Johnson has an attitude problem now, Pat will give her the opportunity to get over it on the bench. If she has trouble doing so, she might ponder the fate of Sade Wiley-Gatewood. She couldn't get over not being THE star, so she transferred. I wonder how that worked out for her? I've never seen Johnson play, but she isn't better than the program. Potential for college ball just means you haven't done it yet.

GJ will be starting for Coach Summitt and the remarks made about her are ridiculous. The kid is an ace and will work her butt off for the Lady Vols.
I always, and I mean always, find it amazing how often these types of remarks come from someone who "watched" a few games, or heard from a "ref" friend. The same vein of statements are being made about the Jurick kid out of Chattanooga that he can't play at the college level and that his 18pts 16rbs a game are not good enough. Amazing that those "friends", or those that have "watched a few games" know more than the coaches in place at UT. Simply amazing.
Hope that candy bar tastes good Tee.

Folks, let's have some faith in Pat. She has handled all types of personalities before and worked out any problems. GJ will probably start, just remember that she will need some adjustment time like Angie. GJ was picked by the HoopGurlz scouts as one of three "impact" players in this fall's national recruiting group. DD went to UCONN and the other one went to Rutgers.
Please, don't sell this young lady short. She knows what it means to be a Lady Vol and will do what is necessary to accomplish that goal for Pat.
Personally, I think this next year will be the most exciting year in Lady Vol history that I can remember and I am a native Tennessean!!! So many of the starting spots are open for everyone so the competition will be wonderful to watch. It will be Pat's toughest coaching job but one of her most satisfying.
Let's see. Angie will start (#2 spot) from the current crew. Cain is the only true center on the team so she will start at #5. Glory will start at the #3 spot.
Fuller and Baugh will battle for the same spot but could also be hard pressed by a couple of the incoming freshmen. Experience goes with Fuller but it remains to be seen if she will make next year's team her own since she is the most experienced player.
Cait will have some tough competition from the Bass girl. They are both about the same size but Bass is quicker. Cait is really tough so I definitely won't count her out.
Smallbone may surprise me but I don't think this next year will be her breakout. I believe she will really contribute in her junior year. Watch for her!

Interesting opinions and info, tenn32rebel. I too think next year will an exciting season for real fans of the Lady Vols. With no apparent star of the magnitude of a Candace Parker, this team should be hungry to prove itself. I didn't mean to dis GJ; I don't know if she has a bad attitude or not. You said what I really meant when you said Pat knows how to deal with all kinds of personalities, and, since GJ is a local girl, I'm sure Pat knows all she thinks she needs to know about what kind of player and person GJ is. The converse is also true; GJ should know that Pat doesn't cut prima donnas much slack, so she probably knows she will have to put her best foot forward from the beginning.
