Looking for a quality tuneup to the SEC Indoor Meet, the No. 3-ranked Tennessee men's track and field team went to the Virginia Tech Challenge on Friday and got a victory out of one of its team captains.
Senior Matthieu Pritchett tied his personal-best time of 6.70 seconds to win the 60-meter dash, one of four Vols to set PRs in Blacksburg.
"We had a good first day," coach Bill Webb said. "The lifetime-best marks were positive. We had two guys stumble in the 200 because of our inability to train on a banked track. Our pole vaulters jumped well and they are well-prepared for the conference meet next week."
Freshman Charlton Rolle set a PR in the 60-hurdle prelims (8.0) and finished sixth in the long jump with another PR of 23-6 1/4.
Senior pole vaulter Michael Hogue claimed fifth overall and second among collegians with a vault of 17-0.
Former Vol and Central High School athlete Jim Sexton was third in the weight throw (63-10 1/2) competing unattached. Current Vol Richard Wooten was fourth at 62-5 1/4.
Men's tennis: After a 12-day layoff, the No. 13-ranked Vols get a chance to knock off some rust with a doubleheader today at UT's Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center.
Tennessee (8-0) takes on 61st-ranked Middle Tennessee State University (4-6) at 11 a.m. and Murray State at 3 p.m.
Murray State is coached by former Vol All-American Mel Purcell.
The Vols have been led this senior by senior Kaden Hensel, freshman J.P. Smith and sophomore Davey Sandgren. All matches are free to the public.
