Cottam does well at NFL Combine

Former Tennessee Vol tight end Brad Cottam had a respectable showing during the first day of the NFL Combine on Saturday in Indianapolis.

Cottam, whose career at UT was plagued by injuries, was among the top performers among tight ends in three testing categories.

He finished fifth in the 40-yard dash in 4.63 seconds, third in the bench press by lifting 225 pounds 24 times and fourth in the vertical leap at 33 inches.

The combine continues through Tuesday with quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs set for today; defensive linemen and linebackers Monday; and cornerbacks and safeties Tuesday.

Other former Vols invited to the combine were quarterback Erik Ainge, safety Jonathan Hefney, linebacker Jerod Mayo and offensive lineman Eric Young.

Wish you well, Brad.

Congrats, Brad....we hope to see you have a successful NFL career.

Remember a few years ago, before Witten was a household name in Tennessee, everyone always had an on going joke about TEs at Tennessee never catching, etc?

I think we have turned that around pretty darn well - Jason Witten, Brad Cottam (hopefully in the NFL), Chris Brown was solid, hopefully next we'll have Brandon Warren lining up on saturdays!

Any updates on him? Or are guys like Adams too busy making you-know-whats out of themselves?

Any truth to the rumor that John Adams injured Cottam three times in his UT career?

If having your IQ take a dive after reading such an idiotic article counts as an injury, odds are, yes!

I'm glad to get a short article and info about our players in the combine..I now hope that Clawson will have a plan for better use of the tightends. the way Witten was wasted....the coaches should have been arrested.

khelton657,

I have to disagree on Witten. I felt he was used greatly. Not so much the tight ends before or after, but Witten proved to be a stud here and I was shocked he wasn't a 1st rounder.

Way to go Brad. I hope that despite your injuries you make to the NFL and have a great career. Good Luck to the other Vols working out for the scouts in Indy.

Way to go Brad! Hay the TITENS need a good TE.

Witten was wasted??? Hmmm, lets see, a guy who was a DE that our coaches were bright enough to turn into a TE where we needed the help at....

2001: 28 receptions, 293 yds, 10.5 ypc, 2 tds (not bad for a team featuring Stallworth and Washington to still get almost 300 yds as a TE)

2002: 39 receptions, 493 yds, 12.6 ypc, 5 tds, leading receiver on the team, broke schools records at TE for receptions and yards receiving

Wow, what a waste! should have had 2000 yards receiving! Begone with the coaches!!!

Geesh people.........

The thing I remember most about Witten was that even after he hit the bigtime at UT..........he was always on punt kickoff coverage and he was always the first one down the field. What a horse!

Congrats to Brad and wish him well. Might be a good fit with the Seahawks as a replacement for an aging Marcus Pollard or the Titans as a weapon for Vince Young....hmmmmmm.

Go Vols !!!
