Uncharted waters for Magnuson

Christine Magnuson swam in unchartered waters for the Tennessee Lady Vols.

She became the first Lady Vol ever to win three events in the SEC swimming and diving championships by outracing Auburn's Ava Ohlmgren in the 100-yard freestyle Saturday night at the University of Alabama pool.

The UT captain - a member of the U.S. national team last summer, won the 50 freestyle Thursday and the 100 butterfly Friday. She also swam a leg on the Lady Vols' winning 200 freestyle relay Friday.

Magnuson won the 100 free in 48.08 seconds after she set the 100 freestyle qualifying pace with a 48.17 swim, .16 of a second faster than Ohlgren and .32 ahead of Auburn's Kara Dabney. In the championship race, the Lady Vol edged Ohlgren by .15. Tennessee's Michele King tied Dabney for third at 48.70.

Auburn won its second consecutive SEC crown, scoring 761.5 points. Florida had 706, Georgia 566.5 and Tennessee 477. The Lady Vols won five events - a team record.

Auburn's men won their 12th consecutive title and 13th of the last 15 by scoring 806 points to Florida's 712, Tennessee's 562 and Georgia's 433. It was the first for coach Richard Quick, who succeeded David Marsh as coach last spring. Quick coached at Auburn in the late 1970s before coaching at Texas and Stanford.

Five more records fell Saturday night, four by men. Thirteen records fell over the four days of swimming. Auburn's Cesar Cielo shattered the 100 freestyle record of 42.39 seconds with a scintilating 41.78. Georgia's Sebastian Rouault won the 1,650 freestyle in 14:35.47 to erase the mark of 14:40.81 he set in 2006 at Tennnessee's Student Aquatic Center. Georgia's Mark Dylla won the 200 butterfly in 1:42.23, erasing the 1:42.39 by Florida's Ryan Lochte, also set in 2006.

Lauren LeRoy, who won the 3-meter springboard event Thursday and took third on the 1-meter board Wednesday, finished fifth on the 10-meter platform. LSU's Paige Brown won with 300.30 points.

The Lady Vols also got an outstanding swim from freshman Aleksa Akerfelds, who was runner-up to Auburn's Maggie Bird in the 1,650 freestyle, finishing in 16:00.11 to Bird's 15:58.27.

Another UT freshman, Martina Moravcikova was sixth in the 200 breaststroke and teammate Jamie Safer was seventh. Florida's Caroline Burckle won the breaststroke reace in 2:12.49.

Burckle's brother, Clark, won the men's 200 breaststroke in 1:56.00 as Tennessee's Brad Craig came in third at 1:57.18.

Michael Wolfe of the Vols did double duty, finishing fifth in the 200 backstroke (1:44.41) and fifth in the 200 butterfly (1:45.05) in a race won by Georgia's Dylla in record time.

Although Cielo won the 100 and his teammate, Alexei Puninski, was runner-up the Vols got a third by Jonas Persson (43.48) and fourth by Nolan Morrell (43.56). Vols Barry Murphy, Michael DeRocco and Octavio Alesi scored points in the consolation race.

The Vols (2:53.30) took second in the 400 freestyle relay to record-setting Auburn (2:50.49). The Lady Vols duplicated that race, taking second in 3:16.22 to Auburn's 3:13.09, also a record.
