Lady Vols come back to beat Virginia in tennis

Tennessee eighth after first round in Puerto Rico

Although it needed a late comeback for the second consecutive contest, the No. 23 Tennessee women's tennis team beat No. 53 Virginia, 4-3, in Charlottesville, Va., on Sunday.

For the seventh time in eight matches this season, the Lady Vols (6-2) won the doubles point.

Sophomore Connor Vogel and freshman Jennifer Meredith teaming up to post an 8-6 victory over Jennifer Stevens and Hampton Williams at the No. 3 position.

Sophomores Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor, the No. 2-ranked doubles team in the nation, won 8-4 over Amanda Rales and Lara Alexander to push their record to 18-4.

Carrying the momentum from her doubles victory into singles, Vogel quickly put Tennessee up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Cathy Nimitz, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.

Virginia rallied for three consecutive victories to take a 3-2 lead.

The first to get Virginia on the scoreboard was Lindsey Pereira who cruised to a 6-0, 6-2, victory over UT junior Samantha Orlin at the third slot in the lineup.

Shortly thereafter, Rales became the first player this spring to defeat the 66th-ranked Whoriskey, doing so by the score of 6-4, 6-1, on the center court.

The loss snapped the Boca Raton, Fla., product's perfect 7-0 record in dual-match play this year.

Just moments later, Maggie Yahner gave Virginia its first lead of the day at 3-2, with a straight-set, 6-3, 6-4, win over No. 90 Zubor on court four.

Needing victories in the day's final two matches, Meredith tied the match at 3 with a 6-2, 6-3 over Alexander at No. 5 singles.

Schutte then gave the Lady Vols the win with a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 victory.

The Lady Vols will close out a season-long six-match road trip with a pair of contests at Ole Miss on Friday and at Misissippi State on Sunday.
