ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. — University of Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart doesn’t want the Wildcats opening the 2008 football season against Louisville on Labor Day night.
Barnhart said Tuesday during an event in Elizabethtown that playing the Cardinals on Sept. 1 wouldn’t give the Wildcats enough time to prepare for their next game on Sept. 6 against Norfolk State.
Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe said Monday he’s hoping to play the Cardinals on Monday night because it would give both schools an opportunity to play in the national spotlight. The Cardinals are scheduled to play on Sept. 6 against Tennessee Tech.
The News-Enterprise in Elizabethtown reports that Barnhart said it’s been traditional for the game to be played anytime from Thursday through Sunday.
Kentucky beat the Cardinals last season 40-34 in Lexington last year on a touchdown pass from Andre Woodson to Steve Johnson.

Norfolk State could be a toughie next season without Andre Woodson!

I don't blame him. A Monday game would suck.

Norfolk State? Kentucky is worried more about Norfolk State than having a nationally shown football game? Awesome! As much as everyone complains about Fulmer, I think he would take a national stage with a short week before Norfolk State. That's why they are Kentucky!

If you need "more time to prepare" for Norfolk State, you ain't got enough time to prepare for anything.......

How would you run your sports section of a newspaper in a big college town? The people who buy newspapers are by and large looked down on by the newspapers which are supposed to serve them. We need good management at this newspaper. Who is in charge over there?

I have generally thought that Mitch Barnhart was much smarter than our AD, but this is a stupid decision. A program like KY needs every chance to play before a national audience that it can get. Norfolk St ? Please.

I'm thinking a few hundred thousand more dollars might make Kentucky a little more flexible with their scheduling. Otherwise, this is just embarrasing for Kentucky and the SEC.

Norfolk state only won about 2 games per year up until last season. If they have to do serious prep for Norfolk State, Ky will have serious problems this year. Gotta love it!

Good grief. We can round up enough of us old farts here to play Norfolk State and be competitive?

Norfolk State??? Classic.

Not enough time for Norfolk State! No more the mildcats - now the fraidycats! How embarrassing for the SEC to have this told.
