Parker honored for classroom work

Tennessee forward Candace Parker added another award to her long list of honors and this one she won off the court.

Parker was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America women’s basketball team announced Tuesday.

The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Parker has a 3.35 grade point average in sports management.

“This is such an honor,” Parker said in a release from ESPN The Magazine. “An athletic career could end at a moment’s notice, but a solid education will last a lifetime.

“My parents always made sure that I understood the importance of academics and impressed upon me a work ethic that has helped me sustain a certain level in the classroom while managing the busy schedule of being a collegiate student athlete.”

Lady Vol teammate Nicky Anosike earned a second-team honor.

Joining Parker on the first team are Portland State’s Delaney Conway, Colorado’s Jackie McFarland, Indiana State’s Laura Rudolphi and Drake’s Lindsay Whorton.

I read the whole paper on-line (guess I'm a geek or something worse!!) and I think it is a crying shame we have only two comments on this article while we have so many comments on a lot of stuff that is so much less important in the grand scheme of things!!! Candace Parker is a credit to UT, our state, her family, and herself -- both on and off the court. I, for one, wish her well in the future, although I selfishly wish she woulld stay another year with the Lady Vols!!!

Candace, there are a whole lot of people our here that support your commitment to excellence in both the classroom and on the court. You have our admiration and gratitude!!

Candace-You rock!!! As a two time graduate from UT there is nothing that you could be more proud of. A college degree and especially one with honors is something NO ONE can ever take away from you. You have proven that you are not only a star on the court but are also one off the court. Congratulations on a job well done. You have been an asset to our university and will be missed. What a class act you are!!!!!!

Candace is great, I think the Moore girl from UConn is even better though. I sure wish Pat could have got her.

Congratulations to Candace Parker. Ultimately, I suspect that CP is going to have a multi-faceted life, of which basketball will be only one part. It will be wonderful when, 20 years from now, the bio on her includes "an honors graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she was both a concensus All-American and an Academic All-American while leading the Lady Vols to two straight national championships."

Candace, when you are President, please come back to some games. :-)

Winning is important in the classroom. We all should try harder to win at the real issues in life. Marriage, health, and government. We do not educate ourselves enough and let others make decisions for us. We all should let Candace be who she is, and we should all follow her good example and succeed and be successful in something things in our own lives.

this is why the lady Vols are in aclass by themselves, whether we win a tournament this year or not. People just lose sight of what it means and what ittakes from so many to have awinning program and good kids who are good students... Ill gladly take a few less championships if we can continue to have the coaches and players that we have and have had...

Way to go Candace! Thanks for being a part of UT history. Continue to strive for excellence and your efforts will be appreciated by all. Best of luck and health in the future as a star in the game of life and basketball.

GO LADY VOLS !! Hang the 8th banner high over The Summit in TBA for all the world to see, and marvel over what can be accomplished when a team applies itself to a dedicated cause!

Nicky Anosike has a 3.7 gpa with Four majors and she's 2nd team academic all america? That's not right?

Oh, Congrats to CP3 & Big Nick by the way. It's nice to know that young ladies who participate in sports take their studies so seriously. Well Done!

OK, this is about Candace and her academics so I say congratulations. I'm watching a replay of the Miss State game so I'm using this article to make a point about complacency. I hear the announcers make comments like: lack of focus, showboating for the fans, sloppy affair, not aggressive; these are things I hate to hear about my team. But they are true. Where's the pride? And where are the fans? There's 19K silent bodies in the arena. I suppose they sense this lackluster basketball too. The men are so exciting to watch. I want the ladies to be exciting again. What must Pat be sensing? These airballs, these unforced turnovers, this lack of intensity. No sense of urgency! That's not fun to watch.

Fantastic Candace. This is what scholastic athletes should be about.

Why can we not just say well done to reinforce positive behavior on articles as this? We always have to tear down. There are plenty of articles that are more appropriate for any negative comments about player comparisons, etc.
