TAMPA, Fla. — The post-season has been all about change for Tennessee football.
Offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe took another job. So did wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor.
The Vols lost players as well as coaches. Six players, including three starters, were ruled academically ineligible.
The team changed. The theme didn’t.
UT won the Outback Bowl the way it won so many other games during the 2007 season. It alternately raised hopes and doubts on the way to a 21-17 victory over Wisconsin on Tuesday at Raymond James Stadium.
You know the drill: Start fast on offense, then slow to a crawl in the second half.
The defense had enough lapses to remind you why it gave up more points than any bunch in UT history. But it also made more plays than Wisconsin could overcome.
How fitting that the final, decisive blow was landed by a member of UT’s much-maligned secondary. Antonio Wardlow intercepted Tyler Donovan’s pass at the UT 1-yard line with 28 seconds to play.
That was the secondary’s last big play. It wasn’t the only one.
The secondary came up just as big on Wisconsin’s first pass as its last.
The first pass didn’t have a happy beginning for the Vols. Faced with a third-and-8, Donovan connected with a wide-open Paul Hubbard for a 27-yard gain to the UT 30 on his team’s first possession. The yards didn’t matter when UT freshman safety Eric Berry jolted the ball loose from Hubbard, and cornerback DeAngelo Willingham recovered for the Vols.
The secondary thwarted the Badgers again early in the fourth quarter. On a fourth-and-2 at the UT 10, Wisconsin eschewed a field goal with 5:52 to play, and put the game in the hands of its quarterback.
Donovan gained time by scrambling away from the UT pass rush. He didn’t have enough time to find an open receiver, the closest of whom appeared to be All-American tight end Travis Beckum.
The pass was too tall for Beckum. It also would have been too tall for Yao Ming.
Beckum’s final statistics show how far UT’s defense has come since September when it gave up a total of 104 points in losses to Cal and Florida.
Beckum caught 71 passes during the regular season. He caught two passes — both on Wisconsin’s last possession — for 22 yards against the Vols.
Beckum tried, but failed, to explain his lack of production. The shoulder injury he suffered late in the season was OK, he said. UT’s secondary was good, “but I played against a lot of great defensive backs,” he said. UT didn’t do anything defensively that he hadn’t seen before, he added.
After all of his attempts at an explanation, I wondered aloud, “I’m still not sure why you couldn’t get the ball more often.”
“I’m on the same page with you,” he said.
Wisconsin coach Eric Bielema had answers for what went wrong. He just didn’t have the right answers.
He took a shot at the “WAC officials,” saying that he would be mindful of that in scheduling future non-conference games. He also said an official apologized to him for missing a call on what Bielema called a “helmet-to-helmet hit” by Berry on Donovan’s 6-yard scoring run in the first quarter.
One small problem: The Outback Bowl officials were from the Mountain West Conference, not the WAC.
Oops.
Never mind the officials’ point of origin. They didn’t decide the game. The Vols did.
They couldn’t move the ball on the ground, but they passed the Badgers silly in the first half. And when the game was on the line, the UT defense finished what its offense started.

How about a new HEAD COACH! F$$$lmer says he is working like heck to find a new OC. What about if we work like heck to replace this mediocre steal the job from Johnny coach. F$$$lmer your time is coming! Maybe next year, maybe the year after. It will catch up to you!!!!!!!!!!!

What's wrong eduardito, upset that Florida got beat?

Hey Holmie done been said not a gator. Just tired of this mediocre coaching staff, while everybody around us makes an upgrade. If you like mediocrity, F$$$lmer is your guy!

Everybody keeps harping on the "helmet-to-helmet" contact by Berry on Donovan in the end zone. Frankly, I thought it was more "shoulder-to-helmet", and was one hell of a great "stick".

Then why in the world are you still arguing about Johnny Majors not being treated fairly and STILL BLAMING Fulmer for it. Get over it man......How rediculous to still hold that grudge!

Eduardoe we won the game! See if you can receive any joy for TENNESSEE man! We shot our selves in the foot with Creer trickery that resulted in fumble when moving to score. Blocked fg also removed us from scoring and of course the block was Coach Fulmers fault right? I mean everything else is so 'stay the course' with your consistent banter. New post name, must be one of our old negative posters recycled due to message content. I am happy for the VOLS!!!

I can't believe how our coaching staff underachieved this year. Terrible job preparing our team. With all that talent we still lost four games. We had the top recruiting class the last three years, we have the best QB in the country. We have the best linebackers we have ever had. More speed then any team in the country. Four losses is just not acceptable with this kind of talent. Its time we get someoine in here who motivate these thugs we call players. Oops wrong board, I thought this was the Gator board. That must be where Touchdown is!

Wisc. coach is the biggest cry baby I have seen. He spent too much time worrying about the officiating than coaching (had to spend 4 timeouts during the game due to mis-alignments on offense)THink he wishes he had a couple of those back from the 2nd half? Ooops, I'm sure it was the referees fault!

Early in the season, I believe some of the Fulmer antis suggested this Wisconsin guy would be a good replacement. Uh - no thanks. I've watched the tape and I still haven't seen a helmet to helmet that he claims happened twice. Just a thought - maybe you might think about not rolling out your slow footed QB and he wouldn't have to take so many shots.

Plasticman is right. We could have...should have beaten them by much more than we did. But, we'll take it...and a 10 win season!

Eduardo, Look at what happened in the 1992 season. I know you don't deal with facts but just to set you straight. Fulmer coached the Vols to three wins at the beginning of the season. Beat GA in Athens and beat Florida 31-14 in Knoxville. Then with Majors the Vols lost to unranked Arkansas and South Carolina and gave Alabama their annual gift. That is the main reason that Majors went and Fulmer stayed. GET OVER IT!!!You should be a Vol fan.Its fun!!!!!!!!!!

You bashers sound more idiotic with every word. You all sound like this cretinous poster at 810PM :"We have the best linebackers we have ever had." Wilson, Burnette, Simon, Jones and several others might disagree.; "...we have the best QB in the country." Ainge has done well here at UT but come on!; "More speed than any team in the country." Are you kidding me?
Another 10-win season. Better than last season, which was better than the year before. Won this bowl game without 3 starters.
And, NO, the staff did not underachieve.
Posted by Titan on January 1, 2008 at 9:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Instead of whining, Bielema should be thanking the refs for the three extra minutes rest time they gave him in the last minute of the game when they reviewed and confirmed that a nine yard gain is good enough for a first down. What was that about?
Posted by Hunter on January 1, 2008 at 10:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)
slovog, you need to work a little harder at perceiving sarcasm. Our brother IronCity was implying that this was the Gator message board, thus making many of those statements accurate.
However, I DO happen to believe that we had the best linebacker tandem in the country, if not the best overall corps. And yes, this staff continues to underachieve. Tennessee got crushed by a Bama team that lost to the likes of MS State and UL Monroe and looked AWFUL in person a few nights ago. Unacceptable.
Change the course.

Bielema was bad. I don't think Wisconsin will be happy a couple of years from now. Great job secondary and defense as a whole.Go Vols.

Okay; season over and a chance for peace and quiet from those who believe it is our devine right to go 14-0 each year. Who are we supposed to play? The Washington Nationals?
Let's review the candidates: Saban? Sure, he won a bowl but would we have been happy with his record? Ask a Dolphin fan about him. Petrino? Puleeze!! Rodriguez(sp?) A great, loyal, homeboy, there. And good old boy Les played LSU like a drum, come possible-jump-ship-time.
I will settle for a good wife (tho perhaps a little portly) who cooks reasonably well and keeps the house clean...most of the time...over a flashy hooker, anytime. Let's be careful what we wish for.
Good game, boys; we won.
Go Vols!

eduardo, you need to read the newspaper more often. Fulmer was given a substantial raise and an extension through 2014. Fulmer is not going anywhere for a very long while. I hear he is staying just to irritate you.

You're right, Hunter. My bad. One too many, I guess.
Sorry about the "cretinous", Ironcity. Yours was the good post. Mine wasn't.

I agree vut56, we need to count our blessings and get serious about replacing Coach C and Trooper. We need to go back to pounding the rock and use the G-gun when they put 8 in the box to stop us. I would sure like to know why Coach C took out Ainge and called the G-Gun play three times in a row? Ainge was shredding the defense at that time. A touchdown then would have changed the whole game. I'll take the win and say good luck to Coach C at Duke, you're gonna need it!!
Govols!

VolfaninKS,
Re: those two brain dead series, (G-Gun [or however] and fumblerooskie [or whatever]) who could have a clue? Cut must have called it, however, and I guess Phil approved. This kind of stuff can drive one nuts, as can a fumble, dropped pass or interception. Whatever is called, the players have to pull it off. We must remember that they are just kids; sometimes THEIR kid just beat OUR kid. I can handle it if we just win our share.

Hey vut56, what would be wrong with that portly housewife playin' like a hooker on the weekends so long as she gets her chores done?
Posted by Bigger_Al on January 2, 2008 at 10:09 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I didn't think there was one helmet-to-helmet, let alone two.
I also couldn't believe the refs stopped play AND the clock after the nine yard gain, and STILL gave them a first down.
And its hard to imagine the frustration of rooting against your coach for sixteen years. That has got to put you in a really sour place.

But the fumblerooskie worked ... we did fumble.

SpringCityVol:
I get your drift and wish for perfection, too. The answer to your question, however,is basic psychology: one can never "please" a "hooker." When they have collected from their last trick, they always look for the next one. (or so it is said)And, if the job goes wrong, the fault always lies somewhere else. Loyalty? Not in a lady of the evening or the Next Best Thing's (football coach) vocabulary.
Pete Carroll or Mr. Gator...maybe; when we still have one of the top ten coaches in the country, why should we delude ourselves that we could attract better? At this stage in the game, if we run off Fulmer, who in their right mind would want to be here?

When UT doesn't run the spread option and trick plays... fans complain they are too "predictable"... when they do, they criticize the failures.... That would be OK except that it is often the very same fans.
I am on record as hating the very notion that UT MIGHT hire a spread option OC. I don't like trick plays... not even simple reverses. I like execution and sound football. When UT did that this season, they won.
Posted by PumpUptheVOLume on January 2, 2008 at 11:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I'm happy about the win... but I hope the new OC doesn't pull the starting QB after he drives us down the field which included two crucial 3rd and long conversions putting us in the red zone. We don't have a RunDMC and we didn't see Crompton.
Why pull your QB when he's hot. Fulmer should have used his muscle on Cut. We came up empty on an opportunity to really put the game out of reach.
PLEEEEEEZE hire an OC with some a$$ fast. Stop the suspense so we can start recruiting while we're still riding a positive victory.
Posted by Ironcity on January 2, 2008 at 2:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I alway find that when a play works, it looks better and less predictable. Its easier in football then in any other sport to second guess the play calls. I know in the SEC championship I would have loved to have seen Jones in more espcially at the end of the game. The fact of the matter is if Ainge throws an INT near the endzone against Wisconsin then everyone would ask why not put in Jones in and see what woud have happened.
Posted by PumpUptheVOLume on January 2, 2008 at 4:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Yea, It can really go either way, but Ainge was hot. And what happened to Hardesty? What happened to Tennessee smash mouth running the ball. Foster's foot speed is just too slow. Hardesty ran the ball well in the first half, then we didn't really see him anymore. I'm just saying.... Three straight plays to Jones and no first down or touchdown from the red zone. I just wish we had mixed it up instead of being one dimensional. The "D" knows it's a run when Jones is taking the snap.

Actually eduardo,
If we liked mediocrity, then Johnny Majors was our guy. Like every current D-1 coach, Fulmer is a CEO, nothing more. It's all about the hires and fires. He should fire Slade, have a little talk with Chavis, and by all means, go outside to find an OC. I heard we were interviewing the ex-QB coach from Michigan. Not a bad choice. They certainly don't have issues at QB or receiver there and the offense is one that Fulmer would be comfortable with. We just need a new playbook and better play-calling, something he could provide. He also already coached QB's so that transition would be seamless. He also has recruiting ties in the upper midwestl, an area we rarely get a player from, especially in the Detroit area. With Rodriguez showing up cold, we could steal some recruits for the next few years and get a pipeline like we had in California until Carroll showed up. Go Vols!!!

good post asleep. the michigan guy sounds like a good fit. however, phil should make marrone say no before he looks elswhere. marrone is a guy with a ton of experience who's not afraid to dip into his bag of tricks on a regular basis. his nfl experience would surely bode well in recruiting. the time for talk and speculation is over for cpf. it's time to make the right hire for the program's future, not for his!

ck out madison.com for Bielema"s course in "Blame everyone but yourself 101". About 3 or 4 decent articles on p##s and moan, p##s and moan.
Well, this yo-yo journey called 2007 Vol football is over. Many are happy and many are happy its over. Ga and Wisconsin were quality wins. Arkie's showing yesterday takes the edge off that one. Won't be half-empty by discussing some outings. Well, lets relax thru the doldrums and perk up every once in a while at any tidbit on OC or recruiting. Good 2008 to all. We have stayed the course thru everything from glazed to a Holy Man to odd oggs from great posts and some in orbit with no rocket.

i wish you all would stop whining about needing a new coach to replace Fulmer. Fulmer is doing an outstanding job. It's the players who need to step up the way the periodically have this season. Coaches can only do so much no matter who they are.
