Tennessee holds off Wisconsin 21-17; Fulmer 'excited where we are headed'

Tennessee defensive end Robert Ayers (91) sacks Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Donovan (12) during the second quarter of the Outback Bowl football game Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008 in Tampa, Fla

TAMPA, Fla. — Phillip Fulmer stepped up to the podium and graciously accepted the Outback Bowl trophy.

No. 16 Tennessee overcame injuries, academic suspensions and the impending departure of two key assistant coaches to beat No. 18 Wisconsin 21-17 Tuesday for the Vols’ first 10-win season since 2004.

“We’ve been waiting a couple of years to get one of these,” the Tennessee coach said after the Vols erased unpleasant memories of a loss to Penn State in last year’s Outback game and also stopped Wisconsin from becoming only the second Big Ten team to beat SEC opponents in three consecutive bowl appearances.

Fulmer’s next order of business is replacing offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe, who has accepted the head coaching job at Duke, and receivers coach Trooper Taylor, who’s leaving to become co-offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.

“I’m excited about where we are, and I’m even more excited about where we’re headed, even with the staff changes,” Fulmer said. “I think that gives us a chance to even be excited about something new and different. I’m looking forward to it.”

Erik Ainge threw for 365 yards and two touchdowns in his final game for the Vols, who also got a stellar performance from a defense that has improved dramatically since early season losses to California and Florida.

A month after having an interception returned for the winning score in a 21-14 loss to LSU in the SEC championship game, Ainge completed 25 of 43 passes without a turnover to win MVP honors.

Fulmer used the 10-point loss to Penn State here last year to motivate players during the offseason. Ainge conceded that finishing his career on winning note was big, even if the Vols fell short of loftier goals.

“That’s big — winning and losing games,” the quarterback said. “If anybody ever says that that’s not everything, they’re lying. Because if we had done everything we did and lost, we wouldn’t be feeling like we feel right now.”

Antonio Wardlow sealed Tennessee’s first 10-win season in three years when he intercepted Tyler Donovan’s deep throw intended for Paul Hubbard in the end zone in the final minute. The Vols also thwarted another fourth-quarter drive by stopping Wisconsin on downs at the Tennessee 10.

“There’s a lot of things we can take from this game,” Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said. “To be able to be in a position that we were, and not come out with a win, it’s a difference of little things along the way from the opening snap to the final snap there at the end.”

Receiver Gerald Jones took a direct snap from center and scored on a 3-yard run, then Ainge tossed TD passes of 29 yards to Josh Briscoe and 31 yards to Brad Cottam to help Tennessee build a 21-7 lead.

Donovan’s 4-yard TD throw to Andy Crooks trimmed Wisconsin’s deficit to 21-14 at the half. The Badgers then pulled within four points on Taylor Mehlhaff’s 27-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the third quarter.

The Wisconsin quarterback shrugged off several big hits, including helmet-to-helmet contact when he dove into the end zone on a 6-yard first-quarter run, to help Wisconsin (9-4) stay close by completing 14 of 24 passes for 155 yards.

Bielema was upset about the officiating in general, but was particularly incensed that Tennessee wasn’t penalized for Eric Berry’s hit that left Donovan down on his back in the end zone.

“One of the issues we’ve gone over as coaches and are warned about, any helmet-to-helmet is going to be called,” the Wisconsin coach said. “The back judge did the proper thing and apologized that he missed the call.”

P.J. Hill returned to Wisconsin’s offense after sitting out two games and missing part of two others, running for 132 yards on 16 carries. His 50-yard run was the big play in the drive that stalled at the Tennessee 10 with six minutes left.

Donovan launched Wisconsin’s last drive from his own 12 with 1:26 to go. The Badgers marched to the Tennessee 36 before the senior overthrew Hubbard, who was racing up the left side of the field.

Tennessee played without six players who were declared academically ineligible, including defensive tackle Demonte Bolden, linebacker Rico McCoy and leading receiver Lucas Taylor, who had 73 receptions for 1,000 yards and five TDs this season.

Briscoe took up the slack in the absence of Taylor, finishing with seven catches for 101 yards.

Both teams rebounded from tough stretches that ruined any hopes of contending for the national title to finish the regular season with nine victories.

Tennessee lost two of its first three games before winning eight of nine to earn a berth in the SEC championship game, where the Vols lost to LSU.

Wisconsin started 5-0 before losses at Illinois and Penn State dropped the Badgers out of the Top 25.

A lopsided loss at Ohio State eliminated any chance of winding up in the Rose Bowl, but the team regrouped to beat Michigan and Minnesota to head to Tampa for its fourth consecutive appearance in a January bowl.

The Badgers beat Auburn and Arkansas in the Capital One Bowl the previous two years and would have joined Michigan as the only Big Ten programs to beat SEC opponents in three straight bowl games.

“Hopefully it makes them very, very mad,” said Bielema, who’s 21-5 in two seasons at Wisconsin.

“I told the guys, I don’t expect to see any smiles but I don’t want to see anybody hanging their heads. Certain guys, at certain times of the game, could have capitalized better for us. We needed to play a very, very clean game overall for us to get a win.”

Ainge played a hell of a game today with absolutly no running game. 10 wins is a great accomplishment considering how well the SEC has done thus far in bowl season.

Great win for the Vols! Gotta say, the Wisconsin QB is a tough nut to crack, though. He took a lickin' and kept on tickin'.

Great way to go out, Erik.

Take a break from spewing vinegar, all you haters, and enjoy the luxury of a 10 win season, and an SEC East title. In spite of significant adversity from several sources, the Vols and our coaches got it done 10 times, even if it was ugly most of the time. One thing is certain, this win feels good, and it will only feel better as the winter drags by. What a ride the Vols has given us non-haters this year!!!

lucky win but we'll take it--Willingham could have been flagged for 15 to change what followed. Typical second half Cutcliff play to not lose play calling that all most cost us again. Even the anouncers said ill-timed strange play calling pulling out gadget plays that blowup to end drives when we were moving the ball. The Creer debacle was ridiculous and pulling Ainge for G at that time made no sense. No running game established and too much pressure Cut created on 3 down conversions. Glad for the win, glad Ainge could go out winning, not crying over Cut to Duke.

This game confirmed what I'd been thinking about Cutcliff. Great at preparation, great QB coach, good with the initial game script but once the game is past the initial script he seems to go into a play calling funk and actually gets too cute at times. We'll miss his attention to detail and demand of excellence from his offense, but won't much miss his game day play calling.

Great win...could have been 35-14 or more, but I'll take the win and another very good showing by the defense. They appear to be for real now.

Foster is tough, has good instincts, good feet but can't out run my mother. Sometimes he looks like he's running in mud. If you could combine his assets with another gear he'd be special. I agree with the sentiment that he'd probably be better with another 10-15 lbs and play full-back and some running back in one back sets. I think he's a good NFL prospect but probably not at tailback. I do like the way he looks to hit someone at the end of plays.

AP story says Ainge threw for 265 yards. Believe that should have been 365. By the way, I thought the announcers were going to go down and kiss the Wisconsin QB's mother, they were gushing so much over his family. I now where she works, what her hobbies are, where they have a second home, etc.
In closing: finally a 10 win season!! I'm sure there will still be lots of criticism, but for me, it gets the New Year off to a great start. Congrats to all the Vol players, coaches and staff!

Great win today. Looks like the young defense is learning how to play to win. Keep the momentum going into the fall team. 10 wins weren't always pretty but this team was real young in spots and had much to learn. We beat the predictions of a few on this site who preached we would lose by 10, 17 even 31. Thanks for a good year Vols. Now, time to go get the SEC. Period.

Great win for the Vols!

UT tries to mix things up on offense and the offensive staff is ripped for poor play calling. If the plays work then Fulmer and Cutcliffe look brilliant and as if they worked on great new wrinkles.

I really don't understand keeping Jones in at QB that one series. That close to the goal line it seems Ainge, or even Crompton, would have been a better choice under center. If Crompton is in, at least he gives a legit run-pass threat and Wisconsin can't key on the QB keeper.

However, if Ainge throws a couple of incomplete passes on those plays it gives Wisconsin an extra 45-50 seconds that might have been the difference in the game.

The defense was great. As others have mentioned, Mayo was a beast.

Wisconsin had one long TD drive all day. The Badger score was set up by the long KO return.

UT does need to get better on special teams next year.

Thanks David Cutcliffe for a great run. Good Luck at Duke. Trooper, if you are in fact gone to OK State, best of luck to you as well.

Now it's time for Phillip Fulmer to make a big hire at OC, and get the other hires in place and use the win to spark a late run in the recruiting season.

Great 10-win season. These kids and coaches never gave up. It might not have been the prettiest 10-win season, but I'll take it.

GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

UT finished with a win
UT will finish with a higher ranking than last year
UT finished with a win over a ranked opponent
UT finished with more wins than in '06
In the 9/8/07 ranking there were 9 teams listed that are no longer ranked. 6 of the teams in the top 25 are now ranked higher and UT is one of the 6.
We played in the SECCG and played well. Not good enough to win with the mistakes but we did not stink it up either.
Since that game 2 of our coaches have rceived promotions to other teams, 6 players were lost to grades and yet this team stayed focused and won his game dispite some questionable play calling by the out going OC.
Complaining about what we accomplished is like a starving man complaining about the food he is served.

Good win. Average season. Nothing more. That is what the sheep are coming to expect out of this university and that is what they are getting. Don't give me this "10 win season crap" though.

1. Southern Miss
2. Ark. St.
3. Miss. St
4. Louisiana Laffeytte
5. South Carolina
6. Vandy
7. Kentucky

All teams that the Vols should beat without a coach even on the field and the players making plays in the dirt. Far superior athletes to these teams.

8. Arkansas
9. Georgia
10. Wisconsin

All teams with similar talent but good wins. Not great.

1. Florida
2. Bama
3. Cal

Ugly. Ugly. Ugly losses.

4. LSU
Tough loss against a superior team.

6 wins against teams with similar talent and 3 wins. That is average and nothing more. Congrats on another average season. Please go and support the real 2 coaches in Knoxville now. Pearl and Summitt. They bring it day in and day out.

No points in 2nd half by Tenn. Wisconsin made best offensive adjustments at halftime which is coaching. UT won the game, but it is a good thing that the game did not go into overtime because the momentum was with Wisconsin from mid-way through the second quarter to the end of game.

eduardo,
You are a miserable malcontent and probably are sucking the air out the room right now even after an exciting win. 10 wins is a big deal especially as a marker for the continued rebound of the program from the 2005 season. And you can poor mouth the East championship (you are an excellent naysayer) but winning a division with programs like Florida and Georgia in it is a positive achievement.

If everything leading up to this game was Fulmers fault and responsibility, then he is equally responsible for keeping his team's mind on Wisconsin and not enabling them with excuses for losing. He was in the arena as a combatant and you were an observer drooling on your bib.

Your 15 minutes are up. Change your diaper and hit the crib.

AlpharettaVol, you are correct - Ainge did throw for 365 yards instead of 265.

rootin4volz, 6 what in a row? Don't forget the SECCG loss.

TommyJack, I was scratching my head on a few of the O playcalls myself. That between the legs trick play looked more suited for the sandlot, but I do like the fact that they are attempting to spice things up a bit. That could help with recruiting. However, a similar play worked well last night for someone (Auburn?).

This was a win, but not a convincing win. I think UT's defense will continue to improve under Chavis, but the offense is up in the air and could go either way. Somehow, I just don't expect much to change regardless of who the OC is. It is reported that Kippy Brown turned UT down because he was not given enough permission to bring in his own offensive staff. That should tell you what the future holds for UT offensively - more of the same. I didn't play football in HS or college, but I can predict UT's offensive plays. That's not good.

Am I the only one trying to will our receivers out of bounds after they get the first down? Questionable (being generous) play calling and TERRIBLE officiating. I am proud of the way the defense played today and am hoping some of the offensive changes will help freshen things up next year. Get the coordinator selected and let's finish off the recruiting season strong. I asked Santa for DT's and WR's this year and am still hoping. Happy New Year out there to all in Vol Land!

8. Arkansas
9. Georgia
10. Wisconsin

All teams with similar talent but good wins. Not great.
-----
Similar talent? I agree as to Wisconsin but Georgia consistently outranks our recruiting classes and Arkansas has excellent skill.

Your rants are biased and lack credibility because you can't filter Fulmer out of your opinions.

Can't any of you guys just admit the program has bounced and has upward momentum since 2005?

i can't believe some of the comments on this board. UT barely edged a team that it should have stomped. i support phil, but i couldn't believe some of the bonehead play calls made during the course of this game. if both teams played to their potential, any day of the week, UT should win by 21, minimum. wisconsin was gutsy, but UT coaching and play calling kept them in this game far beyond their ability.

Great win today, Phil and Erik. Way to end the season on a high note.

Mayo's a beast. Put Berry in some offensive packages and he'll win the heisman next year. Man, that guy is one of the most vicious hitters I've ever seen. 08's lookin' good.

Okay -- I was wrong, wrong, wrong. I had the Badgers by at least 13. Felt very strongly that Fulmer and the staff would not have the team focused and ready to get after it.

I was wrong, wrong, wrong. Congrats, Vols, especially seniors.

But I must say this: what on earth was up with that inexplicable play-calling in the 2nd half?? Coach Cut, I love you, you'll always be a Vol, and I wish you nothing but success at Duke, but...I'm kind of ready for a new offensive mind.

Maybe one that doesn't try a screen on 3rd and 18. Or three consecutive QB keepers with Gerald Jones when everybody in Florida knows he's running.

Edtardo does talk about sheep way too much plus his posts are always inane (that means stupid Ed btw). Nice win against a tough opponent, but shouldn't have been as close as it was. No worries tho'. Wins are wins.

Looking forward to a great hoops season (very good win in Seattle) and next year. Come on back Jerod. While some of you may be worried about the recruiting thing I'm not. Get a good class that wants to be there and work hard. Take Patrick Willis for example. Would have been a GREAT Vol and we didn't want him. Rivals had him as a 2 star and now he's going to be the defensive rookie of the year in the NFL. I think it's a pretty overrated day all in all.

Raise a glass to you all (except the haters 'cause you're too busy wondering about yours being half full) for a peaceful and successful New Year. Cheers

Some of the most vicious hitting I have seen by a UT defense since the Wilson, Henderson days. Both this and the SECCG showed us what we can expect from this squad next season.
It was the OC play calling that kept the Bagers in thi game.
Make the right decision about the new OC and UT is again one of the nations top programs.
Go Vols!!!

arkyvol, put down that shot glass and back away from the bar. The likker is starting to affect your outlook. The Vols just won a bowl game on new year's day and went 10-4. Playcalling was goofy at times but more open to trying a new look than ever before.

Go Vols, I'm out. The negativity and lameness of this board is stifling. Great game! Our players played hard; there were a few questionable play calls, but there always are. Someof the "questionable" calls would have been great play calls if we could have gotten a block or if we would havemade one of their guys miss.

IP, "goofy" is being kind. Actually early Cut was calling a good game--opened it up and was passing vertical for a change--until the Creer gadget debacle for no apparant reason at that time tarnished it all. Theres just no apparant logic to the plays he calls at certain times---a mute point now since hes leaving. Theres more to OC than just calling plays on game day and I'll give Cut the benefit of the doubt on the other but as play calling goes Trooper with no PC experience could play call as good or better than Cut showed this year--lots of it is common sense and timing/calling the play at the right time. Had we not escaped this game, the L would have been on Cut.

No points in the second half.
No wonder he was Dukes third choice.

I knew we were in good shape when Lee and Kirk picked Wisconsin. But UT being UT, you had to wait for the clock-and your heart to expire.

Seems like our guys were slipping on the field an awful lot. Where's those 3/4" cleats from the 1996 Citrus Bowl when you need them?! I can't fathom the trick handoff to Creer for a fumble. Vinson missed a drive killing INT in the endzone. Time and again in the second half, UT just wouldn't put their foot on the Badgers' throats. Stretching the field with the passing game was working and they quit on it. Hitting Tyler Donovan was working and they stopped doing that too.

I think Foster is still looking for an opening to go up field. Hardesty will at least put his head down, deliver a hit and make a yard or two. Foster's too busy trying to make a huge gain out of nothing to be satisfied with just taking what he can.

The refs were pretty bad too. They took forever to reverse the call on the field and for UT to maintain possession on UT's last trip down the field. They also gifted Wisconsin a first down on their final drive, (but failed to add time to the clock). Oh well.

Hey could we get one more shot of Tyler Donovan's mommy in the stands? Does any player besides Donovan have a mom?

Our defense didn't do badly in this game. Once again though, they stayed on the field for most of the second half-just like South Carolina; If our offense scores 21 points in a half, they must think they can just mail it in.

This is not championship football, but you already knew that. Sigh.

"Good win. Average season. Nothing more."

Average does not equate to 10 wins, a top 15 finish, a divisional title, and a win in a New Year's Day bowl. If that's your definition of average, I feel sorry for your kids when they bring home their report cards.

"Hitting Tyler Donovan was working and they stopped doing that too."

They stopped doing that because the quick openers and trap plays they were running inside were working. You can't very well pin your ears back and rush the QB when you have one eye on the tailback.

yabadabadoo1026, had some of those calls worked, Coach C would have looked like a genius. I think it was all about timing, though - that "between the legs" bit wasn't necessary, since we were moving the ball well already. That call cost us at least 3 points, maybe 7.

Still, I'm glad to see the coaches are open-minded to other alternatives. That's what many on these boards have been crying out for.

Fulmer should be coach of the year.
The fact is we still only looked like a complete football team 1 times this year and that was Ga.
I guess as long as you win 10 games and play for a SECCG every once in awhile is just fine.
Just wait for the 2008 season to start and when we get our first 2 loses then they will be here with all the other naysayers calling for a change. But until then all of u naysayers needs to behave.we won 10 games and the 4 we lost doesnt count.

yabadabadoo1026, I just read my post to you earlier, and it seemed kind of a wishy-washy, stay on the fence assessment. Let me try again:

Overall, your post was right on. Early playcalling was good, but half-time adjustments were inadequate. Although the fancy stuff was not necessary, it was exciting to see something different for a change. IMO, they tried it at the wrong times, except for Jones at the goal line.

to all you guys up there who claim we are a much better team and should have beat them so much worse, you are wrong. They were ranked just 2 spots below us which is nothing and the oddsmakers UNBIASLY had us but a 3.5 pt pick---teams were comparable and evenly matched and we should be satisfied escaping with the 4 pt win though with decent playcalling it needn't been an escape.

slovog – Shut up. Here’s a New Year’s resolution for you… THINK!!!

Vols - Awesome job - great to see the team show up or a bowl game - and great to have the win.

Eric Ainge - Too bad the Philbilly nation or that coward Mike Strange won't give you the credit for this win (because they sure as heck blamed to the SEC Championship loss on you). I hope you make millions and enjoy further growth as a QB with a competent NFL coaching staff.

BadgerFan - Enjoy the rest of your cold, cold, cold winter... and your delusions of little 11 grandeur... Remember, here in a few months if the Badger doesn't see it's shadow... oh wait, that's a groundhog... sorry, wrong rodent.

Hope everyone has a Happy 2008!!!

The old " Bell Curve" we learned about in Econ 101, and is basically what Pennington refers to: 10% Hate the Status Quo, IE. Fulmer and 10 % love him. Then there's the 80% out in the middle whose opinions ebb and Flo. Most never write on these blogs or call radio talk shows. Anyway, an A + for effort on the teams part today. They gave it their all. You can nit pick here and there, but I was proud of them. As to the announcers, remember ABC/ESPN covers the Big Ten and gives props to them any way they can. Did you see them cover Erik's parents? Didn't think so. With ESPN/ABC, it's all about the money.

tommyjack--

not sure what you mean. I reread my paragraph and it made sense to me. I was just suggesting that it is funny how we looked so bad against Florida, Florida is losing to MI (though they just scored to take the lead), MI lost to Wisconsin, and we beat Wisconsin. Bama finishes 7-6, FL has at the moment, what, four losses? We, too, but we also have 10 wins, a division title, a New Year's bowl win... pretty good, the way we finished, and pretty funny how it all played out.

Stay the course, pound the rock...I mean that those who are, have been and will continue to be negative will stay the course, will pound the negativity rock, will find the bad even in the good, etc. They say our offense never departs from the dink and dunk; the nay-sayers never depart from the gripe and wipe.

Does that help?

To CRVol and friends:
So sorry about today's loss. I know it was crushing to see Wisconsin fail to consistently run between the tackles to take advantage of Tennessee's lack of depth there. Also, the 4th and 1 call at the UT 10 was a gift to Tennessee.

Wasn't Wisconsin's coach one of the many replacements for Fulmer you were mentioning back in October? No, thanks. Realizing the "grass is not always greener elsewhere" has served me well throughout my career, except for a couple of occasions when it was obvious that a change would be better. Tennessee football is not in that situation now.

Seriously, Tennessee accomplished about as much as possible in 2007, given the youth, especially in the defensive backfield. However, I admit that the Alabama outcome was absolutely unacceptable. It would have been nice if Lincoln had made one of the two FGs to make it 13-10 in the 3rd qtr in Atlanta. I don't think Ainge would have been throwing out of the UT end zone in the 4th qtr with a 17-13 lead. But, as Johnny used to say: "If ifs and buts were candy and nuts...."

I have to think Colquitt played through the year injured. He kicked great in the Georgia game, but I don't think he kicked for a touchback once after that game. If he can kick and punt in 2008 like I know he is capable of kicking, it will be a huge difference. Also, it would be nice to have Mayo back, but I think he would be wise to go on to the NFL.

Have a good off-season, CRVol and friends. I'll end the season the same way I started it, by telling you -- remember, if you ever stand up in front of me at a game when nobody else is standing, I will be the guy who won't stop chewing you out until you show some consideration for others and SIT DOWN.

First, my apologies to 99gator, who is a real class act when posting to this site.

Florida spanked us badly, and I do not like to see the SEC lose, but in this case, it proves that OLD-SCHOOL DEFENSE can control the spread if one has a great Dline with a rush, good LBs to stuff the run and good DB's. Congrats to Lloyd Carr and the Wolverines for showing Tebow is not superman and that a conventional offense can outgun the spread.

Looks like everyone except Adkins.
4 spots to fill.
Gives us all something to follow until signing day. That's a good thing.

Glad we won! Sad the gators lost...except that their loss will serve to keep the idiots from Florida off these pages. But I am stunned that they lost to Michigan. We need USC and LSU to step up BIG time.

That said, we have an exciting team coming back for next year. I hope that we can match them up with a great offensive coordinator. I am surprised we didn't see Crompton at all with all the odd things we did see on offense.

Last thing. I have not been a Tebow basher, but he smelled the place up today. With that in mind, Florida is obviously vulnerable and we get them in our house next year.

Happy New Year all y'all!

This offensive ineptitude - whoever is responsible - has made it clear Randy Sanders was not the problem. Tennessee may be the stupidest offense team I've seen. That stunt pulling Ainge was hideous and even had the second-team ESPN commentators laughing at us.

If Fulmer is smart, he'll head over to Ann Arbor and see who is left from WVU and Michigan once R-Rod settles in on his staff. Michigan just killed Florida in the trenches, whipped their defense, and their receivers looked fabulous. Maybe Coach can go to Orlando tonite and go shopping - no, that would be too obvious.

First time poster. I have read the Fulmer vs Foolmer posts all this year. I admit that my tendency would have been to join the Foolmers. But when it was learned that Ainge has had a (covered up) shoulder injury all year, it all changes. What would the win/loss record look like had he been healthy? (not to even mention the pinkie injury). MIght have won the SEC championship for all I know.

My point: we fans may not know what is really happening behind the scenes. Ainge's throws today (downfield!) looked like a different guy. Great win, although both coaching staffs made some questionable moves.

Go Vols!

By the way...for all the obnoxious gator rhetoric, we WILL finish ahead of them in the final poll!

It's to bad Mich. didn't break Tebow's leg for us. That gives them all spring and summer to get ready for us since they play no one the first 2 games of the year. The SEC needs to take a look at were some of these games fall in the season or better yet FL. should schedule a quality opponent so they would have to practice for them in the off season instead of us. I hate FL and Ga

We really do need to thank Chavis. He has done a decent job with what he has and the defense has kept us in the last few games.

Cutcliffe has been a very good QB coach but he has gotten worse as OC.

This was truly a game that the coaches could have lost for the players. Terrible play calling.

Lesson learened. You take another job don't let the door hit ya on the way out. Sorry we don't need your help or your new boss comin' by

If I'm Fulmer I am excited about the fact I din't have to fire these guys. Now he needs to make sure he does the CEO thing and hire the right people and let/make them coach.

And if that was TT's helping our receivers, he needs to head to OK fast.

Fantastic coaching job this year by Fulmer and staff. They could have tanked it after the AL debacle but they kept their focus and won the SEC East, should have won SEC Champ. Great win today despite some questionable calls by Coach Cut (I've never seen a hand-off between the RB's legs- WOW!!!)Save those for Duke. Looking forward to some great hire's by Coach Fulmer and 2008 could be a fantastic year. Crompton gives us mobility at QB to do more than just throw the ball. Jerod Mayo is our 1998 Al Wilson IF he decides to stay another year. Chavis can watch tape of the FL/Mich. game to prepare to stop Tebow next season. Congrats Fulmer and Vols!

hippie60,

Hippie? Peace and love replaced with violence? Do you mean Students for a Democratic Society, the Weather Underground Organization, the Youth International Party, or the Yippies?

Well done VOLS!!!! Great job Coach Fulmer. Playing with all the negativity of some embarrassing losses and rebounding. It was great to end the season on a positive note for a change. Thanks Eric for ending strong after a bummer of a 4th quarter against LSU. Thanks David Cutcliffe for restoring credibility back to our offense and good luck with Duke, because there is only one way that program can go. GO VOLS look for even better things to come in 2008.

dgb63: What "so called TN fan" is pulling against TN?

Sidewalk: Yeah, you're crystal clear, bub.

Congratulations to Coach Phil Fulmer and the Tennessee Volunteers. Great Win!

Great game Erik Ainge! Jarod Mayo and the rest for making plays and playing tough. No big killer mistakes, beat a very good Wisconsin team who wouldn't give up!

10 wins, SEC East Division champs, with out any quality receivers with experience, only 1 DB with experience, new D-line, big wins over Georgia and Arkansas and now Wisconsin. True Vol fans know this has been a very successful season. Can't wait until September!

GO VOLS!

Great win for the Vols. A 10 win season is solid after a very poor start and the big loss at Bama. I wish the coaching staff had not used on the trick plays in the orange zone because I think it hurt our ability to score. Ainge was playing one of his best games. I think the coaches following Coach Cut to Duke are making a big mistake leaving UT for Duke. I guess time will tell.

The two best spread offense teams in the country will both finish with a lower ranking and worse record than our Pro-style offense. Neither could win their conference or divison and one lost their bowl game to an unranked team.

Posted by IPOrange on January 1, 2008 at 5:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Perhaps the Vols don't need to restructure the offense to run the spread, after all. Maybe they just need to learn how to defend it.

Posted by dgb63 on January 1, 2008 at 5:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree with IPOrange The key to beating the spread teams is on the D side of the ball nit on the O. I think we need to run the best O to fit the players we have. I think the D is the key to winning the Champs.

To the haters, critics, whiners and all the rest who get on here and spew your poison, please take this opportunity to change your sorry views and get a reality check. Please take the time to enjoy this win and get some perspective. Please use the offseason to refocus on all the good things that this team accomplished this year.

If you can't do that please find another team to "call" your team. The Vols do not need your lack of "support" or your fair weatheredness, nor does any true fan want to put up with it any longer.

GO VOLS, now if the Men's and Women's basketball team can pull off a double Championship run then truly it will be a great year in 2008 for Vol fans.

We handled adversity much better than UF and Bama handled prosperity.
For all the criticism of the program, there seems to be a heartbeat there.

6 guys flunk, coaches bail, head coach gets trashed all fall, some really bad losses---- no quit. What could have been team killers were, in fact, team builders.

May not like what happened early or in the middle of the season but we finished at a point significantly ahead of where we started. Doesn't look like a sinking ship from this vantage point.

If we had lost.... But we didn't lose. Get off of Cut's back...he is gone.... Fulmer will have a coordinator in less than 10 days.
This was a great ball game to watch and enjoy.
Ainge went out on a winning note as did
X. Mitchell and Karl and the other seniors. Trooper and Cutcliffe end it right. Fulmer kept his head all year in the face of unwarranted negatives from a lot of people. The KNS sports writers will have to wait a few months to wrongly predict story lines.
God's in His heaven; all is right with the world.

Great post RockyTopRon! My sentiments exactly! I think you're talking to TouchdwnTN, Eduardo and all the other naysayers that get on here and spew their venom.
