Hiring movers won’t be the only expense Matt Luke will incur by following David Cutcliffe to Duke.
Luke, UT’s tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator for the last two seasons, must repay six months of his $130,000 annual salary in the next three months for violating a retention clause in a two-year contract announced in July.
That $65,000 sum is due to Tennessee over the next three months, UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said Friday, shortly after Duke announced the hiring of seven new assistant coaches on Cutcliffe’s staff including Vols running backs coach Kurt Roper as the Blue Devils’ quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.
As previously reported, Luke will be Duke’s offensive line coach, but he also received the additional title of running game coordinator.
The clause in his contract, however, states he must be named either offensive or defensive coordinator to avoid the six-month penalty.
Roper, who will be the Blue Devils’ quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, does not have to repay any portion of his salary.
Both Luke and Roper joined Tennessee following the 2005 season, when Cutcliffe took over as offensive coordinator. Both were members of Cutcliffe’s staff at Ole Miss.
“David, Matt and Kurt all did a tremendous job when they were here,” Hamilton said. “I wish them nothing but success.”
Tennessee’s director of high school relations, Gerald Harrison, will also join Cutcliffe’s staff as the director of football operations, a source told the News Sentinel.
Duke also announced the hiring of five other coaches: former Alabama assistant Ron Middleton (special teams coordinator and tight ends), former Cornell assistant and Ole Miss graduate assistant Zac Roper (running backs/recruiting coordinator), former Florida and Duke assistant Jim Collins (linebackers), former Memphis assistant and Ole Miss graduate assistant Derek Jones (defensive backs) and Duke assistant Scottie Montgomery (wide receivers), the only holdover from Ted Roof’s staff.

Hopefully for Luke, Duke will pay this for him as some type bonus. However, this is what you get sometimes when you break a contract. Good luck to CUT, LUKE & ROPER. Can we schedule you next year? (Just kidding, nothing to gain for the VOLS).

I think the clause is rediculous. Why in the heck would we pay anyone for work they haven't done and won't do? IMO, Roper should have to pay the money back too.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to coaches when they have a payback clause. However, $65K is a pretty healthy lick to payback over three months, especially when he only made $130K. Dook's pockets are deep so I'll bet they help him out a bit.

Voldemort, I don't lie. I was not ragging on anyone; I just get tired of the Fulmer-bashing, Majors-was-a-God posters on this and other sites. I always liked Majors, but I am 100% sure it was him. I was at a traffic light and pulled out onto Neyland just after he passed by. I was kind of excited to have seen him, until I saw where he was headed. If what I saw makes me a loser, so be it.
At least I didn't get my name from a children's book character. What a Riddler!

My take is that Luke would be out with any high profile offensive coordinator, who has enough experience to insist that he bring at least some of his own people. Then, we would have let Luke go (fired him), but would have been obligated to honor whatever remained on his contract, unless he found another position. There is no doubt that Duke will step up and pay the buyout. Now, when Michigan steps up to pay the $4,000,000 to West Virginia for Rodrigues, we'll see the difference between penny ante poker and the high-rollers! Seems like Hamilton's decision is in the penny-ante league to me! Go Vols! SAVol

Ya know, when I was a student at UTK back in the late 90's, word was that Majors was seen at a barbeque joint out in West Town drinking Jack Daniels straight from the bottle. It was a popular rumor at the time. It's validity is somewhat questionable though...
There were a lot of rumors about him as I recall.

It's been like that since they started. I didn't know where he ended and they began.

How about we take the 65 grand from Luke and give that plus some more to George Quarles to bring him aboard? Even if the braintrust at UT is adverse to making him a positions coach, give him Gerald Harrison's position and develop him for a coaching position. Certainly he could coordinate recruiting with high schools in Tennessee and run Fulmer's camps (not to mention hold his clipboard and make KK runs for him).

As for utwicks contemporary Majors post, I wouldn't doubt that a bit. I'm sure a lot of what has happened the last few years has served as comic relief for him.

skyhawk836,
By the way...thanks for the support yesterday on the Lady Vols story. Good stuff.
By the way...I agree about the personal stuff.
There have been time that I was very angry and wanted the whole Majors issue revisited, but thanks to some more even tempered, wise folks here and in the community I buried that one and will not resurrect it. Now, I'm just anxious to see Tennessee football return to the time when we really believed we could beat anybody, anywhere and they believed it as well.

tngeoff,
Yea, I'm happy that it's buried.
I liked Coach Majors, also. Met him several times (he wouldn't know me) when he was recruiting a kid from the school where I was coaching. Doug Mathews, also.
Never had a coach from UT come in our building that wasn't very professional.
As to the Lady Vol stuff, glad to do it. I am so proud that she holds her players accountable. By-product of that is that it "builds" team.
Again, I appreciate the heads-up. I don't visit those boards often.
Gotta go- we play BB tonight.

CRvol, No doubt you have no idea what you're saying and you should be very careful. There is One GOD and only one, The LORD. I don't think Pearl would appreciate you comment. I quote Acts 12:21 -23."And upon a certain day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of man. And immediately the angel of the LORD smote him, because he gave not GOD the glory; and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. Not trying to preach a sermon but just trying to make you aware of your statement.

As I mentioned in a different thread - is it possible that Cutcliff has been the defacto head coach for the past two years? It's a matter of speculation as to what kind of talent we've recruited, but if the coaching staff can't develop these high school players into top-notch college studs the recruiting ratings don't mean squat. Fulmer has been highly questionable in this area over the past several years. How do you think this team would have performed over the past two years if Cutcliff hadn't come back to pull Fulmer's phat out of the fire?

Majors says he's not bitter yet refers to Fulmer as Judas Brutus in a public gathering that gets reported in the newspaper? I wish JM could find some inner peace in all this. My sources, and I know some of you have differing views, say Majors had angered some powerful men on the Athletics Board and overplayed his hand at just the wrong time, giving them an ultimatum. They had the means at hand (Fulmer) to make the tough choice and they made it. Several who are in position to know told me Majors brought this upon himself and that Fulmer was offered his dream job and he took it. What was he supposed to do, fall on his sword for Johnny? Johnny ran a revolving door, and anybody on the staff thought they could be the next to get the axe. I once worked for a guy who would fire anyone who might rise to the level to replace him. I wonder if that was Majors philosophy and he just got careless with Phillip.
And I still believe that no one deserves to have his name on that overhang at Neyland more than Johnny.

tngeoff, Judas Brutus sounds like a slam to me. I won't say anything negative about Majors because I was born in 73 and his legacy isn't as clear to me as other coaches. What I will say is that it appears Majors was forced out and it really hurt him. He was always a good coach that I supported. I hope for the best for him and his family. UT is his home, and I hope he realizes that.

Thanks Huey,
Without good insider knowledge, just watching, listening and reading between the lines that has always been my take as well on the Majors/Fulmer issue. Watching Fulmer all these years, I just don't see the evil, manipulating, ego maniac type of character that many claim him to be. He seems loyal almost to a fault where JM would be quick to fire, CPF can be too slow to act. CPF strikes me as a Tennessee Vol first and foremost and is blindly loyal to UT, uncomplicated as a person, hard working and honest. He's the classic 'blue collar, lunch pail' kind of person that I prefer. I also like the fact that he's an old lineman and still looks like an old lineman versus sleek and purty...he's a football guy and those natural character traights is probably why he's such a good closer. Women will see through bad character and when Phil comes to visit, mom see's a good man and wants her son to be part of that...no acting or fancy talk required on Phil's part.
That does not mean that I will blindly support Phil if he does not continue to improve the program and be successful...I just hope he can go out on top because it's nice to see a good guy succeed every now and then. There's too many Saban and Petrino types in the world and I don't want that type of character associated with UT.

We're not currently in the market for a HC anyways so not sure what your point is. Michigan seemed to be getting a bit desperate and when desperate you end up paying big. I think the way Rodriguez left was totally classless especially given his holier than thou attitude regarding other job offers.
Character counts a lot in my book and I'm glad to see that it apparently does with UT decision makers as well.

In case some of you did not notice, the link provided above on Majors is dated November 2005! Do you suppose that since then Johnny may have found peace and happiness back in East Tennessee?
VOLinDAWGLand, not denigrating Fulmer in any way, but is there any chance Fulmer shows folks exactly what he wants them to see? I see no way that whether under fire, on the field, or being interviewed that he can really be an emotional "flatliner" the way he portrays himself. I think he is possibly a highly complex person who has trained himself to never, ever show any real emotion to the fans. After, all, that's what helped get Johnny in trouble!!
I respect him for his ability to remain so calm, except for when Pennington gets on his case! But, he sure does project the epitome of Tennessee football -- boorrrring!

Gerry...could be. I think good, simple character is often percieved as booring. With the reported candidates he's targeting it seems he's looking to break the offense away from booring. It could be an interesting and good combination to have an OC push the envelope but have the HC always advising a bit of caution and conservatism...makes the HC open up a bit and keeps the OC from doing crazy stuff like Mumme did at UK and Martz is known to do.

I enrolled at UT in '80 following my tour of duties with the Army. While getting my degree I worked as a mgr for the Wendy's franch. in Knoxville.
A little tid-bit of information some may not know.
When UT had some major home games, like Bama, the team would be put up at the Hampton Inn at Ceder Bluff. Johnny wanted to get the team away from campus because of all the hoopla going on. I was working the Wendy's at Ceder Bluff and we wuld be notified ahead of time. The store would be made ready for the players and coches at a certain time and that is were they would come for dinner.
Since it was not big enough to handle the whole team at once they were brought in by groups. Never figured out if it was by grade or positioon but when the linemen came in you had better have the grill full.
Johnny was always great, a little gruff at times but he wanted his players treated good and did not want the distractions of what all was going on at the campus to interfear with a good nights rest.
You guys talking about the Mouse's Ear brought back old memories of when I still lived in Knoxville. Places like Uncle Sam's out close to the airport was BYOB back then, the Pickle U Pub on Cumberland. Oh well back to reality now. :-)

UT needs the $65,000 to pay for...nothing. The athletics department has so much money that it could bail the state out of its own debt.
This $65,000 should be used to....I'll leave the comments for the rest of you.

Call me naive but I believe all of these stories. My Dad was a Vol and he told me some similar Majors stories.

Methinks Dook has a plethora of very successful grads in the Haslam- Thornton range or up. Probably B-ball fans but I doubt if Bro Matthew Luke doesn't have easy access to a quickly forgiven loan. Pretty much a typical doldrums non-story. ad inf.....

Eric Berry's Dad (James) was a Vol too. Ask Him.
"I was a highly recruited athlete out of Mississippi, and once I paid my visit to Tennessee, it was more or less the fan support and the home atmosphere that sold me. It was just wonderful. And I have the utmost respect for coach Johnny Majors. He was one of the great guys to come out of the University of Tennessee. Everything that he told me from ‘we’re not going to promise you anything’ to ‘you’re going to have to earn a starting position once you get here,’ turned out to be true. I loved playing for Coach Majors.”

You can talk smack til' the cows come home, but there are many different thoughts about the man and the negative ones don't overpower the positive ones. The man is a Tennessee Legend and it takes a weak man to try to belittle him.

He chose to break the contract...good riddance....now make his arse pay for the breech. Dookie can pay it for him. That is unless they're running short on funds defending lawsuits filed by the lacross players they screwed over.

tngeoff, watching the 85' Alabama game tape brings back good and bad memories. Bama fans sure showed their lack of class cheering Tony's injury. They'd paid for it in the end. The bas...ds.

grvol,
I have hated Bama's fans ever since. That was sick. After watching 12TIMES post on here, it was like a constant reminder of just how low many of them are. There are good ones...just not in evidence when Robinson got hurt.

The more stories I hear about Johnny telling the power elite to get bent, the more I like him. NOTHING worse than rich, powerful, "elite" alums trying to run the show. I know we need them. I know all programs have them, but they are truly offensive peeps.

WD40plusvol, Am not proselytizing but just trying to make him aware of what he is doing which offends me and I don't believe what he said is any way worship of GOD as you state or did I advise him who he should.

Have you LOST what little mind you have. YOU consider it an improvement to further his career to leave Tennessee to go to DUKE!! Give me a break.
After Cut is fired in a few years or retires, what do you think will happen to the coaches that followed him to Duke.

I think some of the postings here about Johnny and Phil are out of place for this article. Both have or had their problems and both have been tremendous impacts to the proud football program we have. I just want to program to move forward and to a new level of competition. If that requires the General to be raised from the grave to do so, then bring it on.

TommyJack, there's still that little matter of TDTN glazed bill. I paid my third. I figure you owe about $596.11. Wonder who old Tdtn carried all those glazed to? You don't think he snorted them, do you? Naw.
Need to remind tngeoff, too.

I know several Hodges. Saw one at the game last night and asked about Warner Hodges III. No relation, but they said they knew one in Germantown that was a lawyer. That the guy?
marc_ash: not from Chattanooga. Principal at a high school in STATE of West Tennesse. LOL

skyhawk836,
Yes. That guy. He is one of my oldest friends. I was in his wedding many, many years ago. His brother Link is also a lawyer and his brother Jeff is a great guy as they all are. I used to live in Germantown and my first wife (God rest her Soul) taught at Germantown Elementary school way back in the day. Have a great day and Go Vols!

skyhawk836,
By the way...that "State of West Tennessee" thing? When I was going to UT the sign as you entered Tennessee said "The Three States of Tennessee welcome you." Of course it dates back to the Civil War, but many Tennesseeans don't know much if anything about it.
