Vols dominate Georgia Tech in swimming

Coach John Trembley's swim team got rid of the holiday rust by splashing past Georgia Tech 98-63 Friday at Ray Bussard Pool and immediately set its sights on Indiana, which will visit UT at 1 p.m. Jan. 18.

The teams got away from the usual, swimming odd races and odd distances. The Vols adapted better than the Yellow Jackets, winning seven of nine events.

Captain Michael Wolfe turned in the most impressive race, winning the 400-yard freestyle in 3 minutes, 37.96 seconds. Barry Murphy of the Vols had a commendable victory in the 50 freestyle (20.5).

The Vols (6-0) won the opening relay - the 150-yard butterfly - in 1:09.63, the 500 freestyle crescendo relay (3:10.62) and 200 underwater relay in 1:36.36. Tech won the 100 breaststroke relay and 100 backstroke relay. UT's Nolan Morrell (200 freestyle in 1:55.222) and Stephen Fortney (100 individual medley in 53.04) also were winners.

Lady Vols Swimming: Lauren LeRoy had her second 10th-place finish at the Georgia Diving Invitational at Athens, Ga.

She scored 248.60 points on the 3-meter springboard.

The Lady Vols swim team (4-1) will face Northwestern today in a two-part meet. The first will begin at 10 a.m., the second at 5 p.m.
