Vols will have to wait to add high school stars

ORLANDO, Fla. — Recruiting season’s second biggest day came and went with barely a mention of Tennessee.

As expected the Vols didn’t receive a commitment from a player in the Under Armour All-America High School Football Game in Orlando or the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.

UT commitment Aaron Douglas of Maryville High School was an alternate for the San Antonio all-star event.

The Vols are thought to be in fine shape with offensive linemen Kenneth Page and Antoine McClain, although both Orlando all-stars are considering other schools as well.

Page, a 6-foot-4, 300-pounder from A.C. Flora High in Columbia S.C., is considering UT, North Carolina, South Carolina and Notre Dame.

McClain, a 6-6, 315-pounder from Anniston (Ala.) High, is considering UT, Clemson, Auburn and LSU and said he will announce his decision on recruiting’s biggest day on Feb. 6: National Signing Day.

McClain played most of the game Saturday. Following an interception, he registered a tackle that may have saved a touchdown just before halftime.

“Had to stop the touchdown,” McClain said with a smile. “I feel good about that.”

Aside from McClain and Page, the Vols’ other shots to land an All-American will come next weekend when Brandon Thompson takes his official visit to UT and Jerrell Harris takes his official visit on Feb. 1.

“I’m going to base my decision off where I feel most comfortable,” said Thompson, a 6-2, 275-pound defensive tackle from Thomasville (Ga.) High who played in Orlando. “That’s what it’s going to come down to.”

Thompson pared his list of schools down and has UT among his final three, along with LSU and Clemson. He also mentioned Ohio State as a possibility. Thompson said he’ll make a decision shortly after his visit to Knoxville.

“I hope to find out a little more about the academic support and how things are ran,” Thompson said of UT.

Harris, a 6-3, 215-pound linebacker from Gadsden City (Ala.) High, told the News Sentinel this week in Orlando that he was considering UT, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Southern Cal and Clemson.

The Vols were never really in the running for Josh Jarboe, the 6-3, 195-pound receiver who chose Oklahoma over Florida on Saturday. Apparently, the lack of interest was mutual.

“They never really came to us, so I was like ‘Forget it,’ ” said Jarboe, who caught one pass for nine yards in Team Undeniable’s 14-17 loss to Team Click Clack at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.

The Vols were thought to be involved with only one prospect playing in San Antonio. That apparently wasn’t the case as Gerell Robinson committed to Arizona State during the game’s telecast.

The 6-4, 210-pound athlete from Hamilton High in Chandler, Ariz., was considered a long shot for the Vols. He hadn’t scheduled an official visit to Knoxville and recently told asudevils.com that he was primarily considering Arizona State, Oregon and Notre Dame.

That’s quite a departure for the Vols’ past success on All-American Saturday, especially in San Antonio, which hosts what is traditionally thought of as the premier of the two events.

UT landed five U.S. Army All-Americans last year, one in 2006 — following a 5-6 season — and eight in 2005.

The Vols very likely would have had much more of a presence in San Antonio had it not been for its recent coaching changes. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor from Jeannette (Pa.) High was strongly considering UT until David Cutcliffe left his offensive coordinator position to become coach at Duke.

The 6-6, 235-pound athlete was named MVP in San Antonio after he completed 4-of-6 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown and rushed 10 times for 79 yards and a score, leading the East to a 33-23 victory over the West.

Pryor is considering Michigan, Ohio State, Florida, Oregon and Penn State.

Former UT receivers coach Trooper Taylor was recruiting a handful of athletes in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl before leaving to accept a co-offensive coordinator position at Oklahoma State.

No need to panic. Fulmer has always hired great recruiters. Only concern is time remaining this season. He needs to make a quick decision or this year will suffer in recruiting

We always close well on signing day. I still believe we will be in good shape when it's all said and done. We NEED LINEMEN. BIG, STRONG, BAD LINEMEN!!

KingsportVol, Pryor is taking a visit to Duke just to visit with Coach Cut. No way a kid like that signs with Duke, but he respects Coach Cut that much. We had a real chance.

If anyone wants to see the Army All-Star game rosters, here they are:

knoxsingle no we didn't have chance.Fulmer was not going to change our prevent offense for one player.I think he respects coach Cut as well. But that alone would not have got him to Knoxville. Our offense is very predictable.

I don't see how we could have the season we had and be somewhere cloe to preseason top 10 and still have all this bulls-it slamming of recruiting (I do hope that takes off soon) and Coach Fulmer and the whole post-season top 15. It's just doesn't make sense. If we're anywhere near the top ten, I sure as h-ll hope we stay the course. Damn, what a bunch of losers.

And spare me all the kick your ass crap. Go lift some weights or something.

Hope you had a good time in Atlanta, Dustin. Be careful on the road, pal. No, I'm not afraid (and I don't think you were saying I was); I'm just not one of these computer savy kids and didn't know. It is kind of funny, ain't it? I was always the kid in class who asked the dumb question that everybody else really wanted to know too. I hope folks don't take these boards too seriously, but we are talkin' 'bout our Vols, you know . . . .

Peace Out

I'm no hater and I think Fulmer will pick up some guys late but boy, we are really behind this year! One down class won't hurt you but the '06 class was a little skinny too. That would be 2 of our 5 usable classes would be considerably less talented than we are used to. That could make a difference in the depth chart which is everything in the SEC. Vandy has decent starters but after that...

As far as our predictable offense - that's OK if it is executed well and mixed up a little in the play-calling. Cut had that problem before his Ole Miss experiment and still had it when he came back. We must have hundreds of plays we can run but he picked about 25 he liked and stuck with them in a predictable pattern. The new OC, even if it ends up being Taylor, needs to mix it up and it will take care of itself. We would have all kinds of trouble if we completely scrapped the offensive philosophy we have run for 20 years. We don't have the right players, the right HC, or the right fan base for that sort of game. However, I do think we should mix in some spread formations or run some spread plays out of existing formations. That would move us forward and keep us on the leading edge, not the bleeding edge. Go Vols!!!

I hope we can snag some O-lineman and D-lineman. That's what we need right now, particularly the D-line.

More often than not, recruiting services "miss" on a lot of players. Let's get the guys who haven't peaked yet and are hungry to improve.

“I hope to find out a little more about the academic support and how things are ran,” Thompson said of UT.

In other words - I wanna know who's gonna do my work for me (now that Traitor Troop is gone) and if I really have to go to class!

Man, ole FOOLmer is setting this up perfect to get yet another extension and raise! He'll milk this "offensive staff left in '08, recruiting was hurt due to timing, it was just a perfect storm of events..." crap for at least another 4 years worth of robbery!

Are there NCAA guidelines for number of coaches or staff? I don't think we have enough. Why not Kevin Simon and Tee Martin both to replace Gerald Harrison at high school relation co-ordinator? What does Condredge Holloway do anyway, besides speak to alumni groups? We need a separate special teams expert, a QB coach separate from OC, a recruiting coordinator who coordinates a staff of recruiting analysts, private eyes, spies, or whatever it takes to find out who the other big schools want and go after them too. Do we have enough bodies doing the jobs for 21st century college football BUSINESS. Let's act like it is. Hamilton implies money is not an obstacle. Fans who want a voice, pony up some cash. We shall see if Phil is smart enough to use the current "climate" and opportunity to surround himself with all the help we can get. BTW....would you consider OU to have been robbed by Stoops for the last four years of losing his big bowl game, moving downhill, but keeping on climbing in his salary?

Has anyone ever heard of a down cycle? Everyone has them, its part of life, business and sports. Thats what we have been going threw ever since '01. We hit bottom in '05. Starting climbing out last year, mad a big improvement after a slow start this year. Next year we have a ton of players coming back that are starters. Add in Morely, and the baseball player thats coming in. And hopefully some big strong DT's and fast athletic DE's. Maybe Martin can fill one of the DE voids. We should be a top 10 team, and make a bigger improvement. It took from 02-05 to get to the bottom, 06-08 to get back to where we were. Which is the best program in the country.

Now, Now TJ, hope springs eternal. Next years, remember. You must have a stout clear purpose such as an ant crawling up a giraffe's hind leg with rape on his mind. Maybe this is the year it isn't spin cycle, but finally finish the drill.

We've only been staying the course for errr...nine years now. You simply don't understand the master plan. You must ask questions such as "How long is a piece of string"? Not when will we win the grail again?

TJ - I just asked what a fullback (recruit from NC) was and you're talking about coming by land?

We would have to carpool to storied old Grant Field to the South of here to see the pig toted as primary means of travel. That old Johnson boy believes what Neyland said.

"Take your best 11, put them on defense. Select the strongest of them and make him your punter. Whatever you have left over , let them be your offense". or close. Have a great 2008.

Posted by sjt18 on January 7, 2008 at 3:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The risks would be tremendous but Pryor could start from day one at Duke, play for Coach K, and be drafted in one sport or the other no more than three years from now.

They only have a limited number of visits they can take. If he's going to visit Duke then he's either serious or already committed to going elsewhere. From his comments prior to Cut's departure, he seemed to think DC was the guy most able to get him to the NFL. Though he's maybe ideal for the spread option, he was attracted to Cut's O.

I thought Mich would get him after RR went to coach there.... but who knows. This would definitely put Cut on the map and could turn some other blue chip recruits.

We Gators enjoy reading your constant whining about Coach Fulmer as well as the references to "The Glory Days of Tennessee Football".

While you guys are whining and reflecting on something that never was, Coach Meyer is building a Dynasty at Florida.

You had a great year in 2007 and when we relaod in 5 to 6 years from now, you will have another great year.

Hate to say it, but UT will not finish in the top 20 for recruiting in all the major rankings this year. Too much change in the coaching staff, and we weren't doing anything even before the coaching changes were announced.
