Asheville shocks South Carolina

Kenny George's dunk with 26.8 seconds left gave North Carolina-Asheville the lead for good as the Bulldogs scored the final 10 points to defeat South Carolina 61-58 Saturday night in Columbia.

George, who at 7-foot-7, 360 pounds is the nation's tallest player, led the Bulldogs (11-3) with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

"It certainly was one of our most disappointing losses," South Carolina coach Dave Odom said. "It's a hugely disappointing game. I knew it was going to be a difficult game coming in. But still that's one that we let get away."

South Carolina (8-6) was led by Downey with 18 points.

Vanderbilt 97, UMass 88: Vanderbilt's Shan Foster scored 32 points and swished a 3-pointer that all but sealed the Commodores' victory over the Minutemen (11-3) in Nashville.

Mississippi St. 77, Lafayette 53: Ben Hansbrough scored 17 points and Jarvis Varnado had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Bulldogs (9-5) held the Leopards (8-6) without a field goal for more than 7 1/2 minutes in the second half at Starkville, Miss.

Gonzaga 75, Georgia 67: Matt Bouldin scored 21 points as Gonzaga (11-4) beat the Bulldogs in Spokane, Wash.

Billy Humphrey scored 24 points and Sundiata Gaines 21 for Georgia (8-4), which shot only 35 percent.

"Their transition game had a much greater impact on the game than ours did," Georgia coach Dennis Felton said.

Texas A&M 79, LSU 53: Donald Sloan had 17 points and the 12th-ranked Aggies made it seven in a row over the Tigers (7-7) at College Station, Texas.

LSU was led by Anthony Randolph with 16 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Arkansas 85, Baylor 78: Robert Weems scored 18 of his 21 points after halftime and the Razorbacks ended the Bears' six-game winning streak in Dallas.
