Timeline for offensive coordinator search

It’s been a busy few weeks at Tennessee, which is in the process of hiring a new offensive coordinator and three other offensive assistant coaches. Here are some significant events in the process, starting with the one that kicked it all off:

Dec. 12 — OC David Cutcliffe interviews at Duke.

Dec. 15 — Cutcliffe introduced as Duke’s head coach.

Dec. 16 — WR coach Trooper Taylor interviews for OC job at Baylor.

Dec. 19 — Taylor named co-offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.

Dec. 21 — Clemson OC Rob Spence interviews in Knoxville.

Dec. 23 — DE coach Steve Caldwell says he’ll stay at UT after talking with Arkansas about becoming its DC.

Dec. 25 — UT arrives in Tampa for Outback Bowl; while in Florida, Fulmer speaks with Michigan QB coach Scott Loeffler about similar position at UT.

Dec. 29 — Spence tells reporters he’s staying at Clemson; News Sentinel reports UT in discussions with Kippy Brown.

Jan. 1 — Tennessee defeats No. 18 Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl, 21-17.

Jan. 3 — San Francisco 49ers QB coach Frank Cignetti interviews in Knoxville; Detroit Lions officially name Brown passing game coordinator.

Jan. 4 — Tennessee RB coach Kurt Roper officially named Duke OC; TE coach Matt Luke named OL coach at Duke.

Jan. 6 — Cignetti named OC and QB coach at Cal.

Jan. 8 — Tennessee is scheduled to hold its first team meeting since the Outback Bowl, a date Fulmer pointed to as a goal to have an OC in place.

What's the point of this article?? You needed to timeline what we already know?? What a productive way to spend your time!!

Posted by Brama on January 7, 2008 at 10:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I think everbody already knew this information seems like a waste of time. Drew Edwards should have found some high school sport to cover instead of writing this article.

Posted by TNPilgrim on January 7, 2008 at 10:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Why didn't they fill this space on the sports page with an ad? Better yet, an article about the bowl game last night.

Posted by GerryOP on January 7, 2008 at 11:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)

You guys crack me up! All the man did was publish a timeline -- facts! Hopefully he will continue to update it until the saga ends?

Oh, I know, it is easier to hypothesize on raw, random, rumors than it is to propose conclusions based on facts! I think what Edwards is trying to say is based on the facts/timeline, there is no way in hell we can draw any conclusions about what is going on.

We are mushrooms!!

I love the "true Vol fans" take on everything.

The way I see it is this: We can a have a coach who is a native son, loves his school, loves his state, loves the program he is in and bolts for Michigan when the money comes knocking; or we can have a coach who loves his alma mater, loves the UM program, and loves the Big Ten but stays at LSU when the money gets better; or we can have a coach who loves college ball, loves the NFL, loves whoevere is courting him at the time and then moves to ARK when things fall apart in the NFL or UL.

Thanks but no thanks, I'll take Coach Fulmer ANYDAY! With him, we know he loves our school, the players, the program, and everything about Tennessee. So get off his case and let him do the job he was hired to do.

You go GerryOP and revjulian!

Just don't let the Legion of Miserables get you down. Look at them as a comedy act, it helps.

Instead of the Legion of Miserables, maybe we should call them the Army of Stooges.

just a thought it could b possible that UT could have a OC and we just dont kno it yet....

I would like to see Tropper get a shot. I didn't thing so at first, but since we do not have a front runner anymore, what the heck. Fulmer is there to help him, and if he does well, Tropper could be a head coach in 3 to 4 years.

Posted by scvols on January 7, 2008 at 12:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

That is Trooper, not Tropper, sorry about that.

I agree, GIVE TROOPER A CHANCE!!!!

This is just another instance of media interference in an area where it has no business. Circumstances would be a lot better if decisions had been made in the interests of the program instead of trying to cater to the media.
I hope Phillip continues to have the moxie to ignore such pressure. Much like firemen who set fires so they can ride the fire engine, media types like this try to force issues so they can later criticize the decisions they forced.
Based on my 65 years experience with the VOLS, Phillip is the best coach we have had and his record supports my opinion. What we need is a completely new and unbiased media that is supportive of his efforts intead of that which we have that wants to make a name for itself by criticizing the organization that feeds it. Even ESPN
people have been critical of those here who bite the hand that gives them reason for employment.
I wish the AD had the balls to set them straight.

No problem if you don't like the article. Ask for your money back and then subscribe somewhere else. Those of us left behind will continue to read about Tennessee football.

Trooper was ouir best recruiter and he's a class guy that has a knack for relating well with today's generation of young people. Let's give him a shot!

This just in. Johnny Majors is no longer at UT and Phillip Fulmer is the new Coach. Bernard King and Ernie Grunfeld will leave mens hoops program to turn pro, and Lady Vols have hired a 22 year old coach named Pat Head. Thought you'd want to know!!

We want Chow!

Excellent point dadwasavol. One concern though, this went to a free site in June I believe, if you paid anyone at KNS, ask for your money back. Seriously, the point is well-made, if you don't like it don't read it.

Or if your memory functions for more than about a month, you can disregard reading it like I did. Go ahead John, you can keep writing redundant stuff for our readers that have Partheimer's. They need you.

Let's get Trooper as OC & WR's coach.
George Quarles as QB coach.
Someone who is a special teams coach and recruiter.
That would give us some exciting new ideas in our offense.

cduldoc that was really clever from another of the 'tasteless posters' who can't keep their glazed hands off the head coaches girth. Personal attacks are rude and childish. I hope the rest of the year ewe and others of the same class can show some by showing the Leopard can change its spots.

I love the CPF bashers. All this crap to talk, but nothing to back it up. I hate to break it to you but CPF has been the best thing for this program since Gen. Neyland. The man could win 3 Nat. titles and you would still cry and moan over it. I love having CPF in k-ville. Look at what he's done for us. The guy nearly brought us another SEC title not to mention a 10 win season and you guys are still on the picket line calling for his head. I firmly believe CPF is competant enough to make the right choice for OC. And you know what, I'm perfectly fie w/ keeping a pro style offense. Smash mouth is where it's at anyways.

I really like the Idea of Quarles as a coach at TN. However, I dont know what kind of relationship he and Fulmer have, and that would be key to his success. I have watched in awe of coach Quarless' success at the High school level and I do believe he would make a great college coach. I, however, dont believe he would do well as OC right out of the gate. Mabye, starting as the QB coach, or RB coach would be a good way for him to get some expierience.

revjulian, Rok_Etop, oenoboy, ctownvol, GerryOP To address the many that THOUGHT I was saying something hateful or degrading about CPF, read my post! To those that took offense to what I posted first, all I said was this was a waste of space and time. We already knew this stuff!! I just made a comment about the article which by no means has anything to do with me being negative about the UT program or its coaching! I have and always will support Phillip Fulmer and staff whoever that may be in the future!! When did this cease to become a board to express your view on the articles written?? Revjulian, when you made your first post on this article based on what a couple of people said ahead of you, where did you see anything negative about Phillip Fulmer?? Were we not just commenting on the article and it's lack of new information?? Read before you rant!!

By the way, I think Quarles would be a good position coach hire!! If we were to do that and he did a great job I then would hope everyone was right about him wanting to stay close to home!! That's just in the event that he was hired and did a good job!!

First off, just because you are well aware of the OC search timeline, does not mean everyone else who reads the Sentinel is. Therefore this article is useful information to those that do not keep up with this stuff like you and I do.

As for the references to the Legion of Miserables, you just showed one more example of someone going negative over something that just isn't. The references to the masses of negative nillies was simply spurred by that. Nobody used you moniker as an example and sorry if you take offense. The constant negative feedback towards every story be it the subject matter or the article itself just gets old.

revjulian...I can appreciate your love and affection for Phil; however, having seen his entire body of work, the various College AD's and NFL GM's chose not to call him...they never call him. They call the likes of Rodriguez and Miles and Petrino, etc. Now I'm no expert, so I won't pretend to know why that is, but I rather think that it might be because Phil isn't widely (or even narrowly) regarded as a creative genius. Would Phil have coaching options if he ever left UT? Of course he would, but make no mistake...none of them would be an upgrade of the job he has right now. That single factor has a heck of a lot more to do with why Phil won't bolt than the the fact he refuses to entertain better offers...BETTER OFFERS SIMPLY DON'T EXIST FOR PHIL.

jhenson...I can see why you may think that but two important fact go against your argument. One, we don't know who has or has not contacted Phil Fulmer over the years. Two, it is understood he is loyal to his program like Joe Pa and Bobby Bowden and thus not even considered an option. The man is approaching retirement.

If you think Phil Fulmer is not respected by ADs and other coaches, you are sorely mistaken.

FWIW, this guy is the real McCoy. Maybe this is the blockbuster thingee Good Ol' Phil is holding close. From Wikipedia:

"He eventually interviewed for the chance to be UCLA's next coach, but withdrew his candidacy soon thereafter. UCLA's new head coach, Rick Neuheisel, later contacted Chow to offer him the offensive coordinator job.

Chow also emerged as a leading candidate for the replacement of June Jones at the University of Hawaii.

Although he resides in Nashville most of the year, Chow maintains his permanent residence in Manhattan Beach, California."

This would be big, REALLY BIG!

jhenson, one reason better options don't exist for Phillip Fulmer is he has one of the elite jobs in college football. If SMU can pay June Jones $2 mil, don't you think UT could pay whatever was needed to get or keep a coach?

There are numerous great high school coaches in the United States, if they are all so great, why aren't they mentioned for what would be considered a better job or step up?

The way I see it, and I think most of us Vols see it as well, is Phillip Fulmer has the best job in the country. He's a Tennessee native coaching at his alma mater and is well paid. And everything else Oenoboy said. LOL

trooper is a bad positions coach. When RB's coach in '05 we led everyone on earth in fumbles. As WR's coach, he can't coach the recievers to extend a route past the first down marker on 3rd down. So why does anyone think he will be a good fit at OC?
he is just there to recruit inner city talent.
