A second round of medical tests raised hopes that Duke Crews might ultimately resume his University of Tennessee basketball career, coach Bruce Pearl said Monday.
Crews, a sophomore forward, went on indefinite medical leave in mid-December after an echocardiogram given to all UT athletes revealed an issue with his heart. Pearl said Monday a second round of tests late last month were encouraging and a third set of tests will take place next week.
“The results of the second test were better than the first test,’’ Pearl said. “We’ll do another set next week and from that point, make a decision on his status for the rest of the season.
“We’re very optimistic he will be able to return at some point.’’
Crews averaged 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds in eight games this year before the diagnosis. As a freshman, Crews averaged 8.4 points and 5.1 rebounds, starting 18 of 35 games.
