Western Kentucky has been added to fill the vacant spot on Tennessee's 2009 football schedule, UT's sports information office announced in a release Monday night.
The Vols will face the Hilltoppers to open the season on Sept. 5 in Knoxville, said UT athletic director Mike Hamilton, who said that the Vols will host a second game against Western Kentucky in 2013.
Western Kentucky just completed a transition season into Division I-A. The Hilltoppers played Auburn in 2003 and 2005, Georgia in 2006 and Florida in 2007. They are scheduled to play Alabama next year.
The game in 2013 will be played on Sept. 7.

UT is still the only SEC school not to schedule a team from Div 1 FCS! Way to go Vols! (that's the old D1-AA)

Please schedule my alma mater - Presbyterian College. That way I could see my two favorite football teams play at the same time.
But, they are 1-aa

maybe we can get some real power house such as Austin Peay or Carson Newmen.
Maybe Hamilton is trying to get Tenn in Div 2 , where we will have a chance.

WHY?

Can someone tell me the last time UT played Clemson in a regular season game (minus the Bowl a few years back)? This school is close to us, has great tradition and I never hear anyone talk of a UT -v- Clemson series. UGA and USC play them. Just food for thought and conversation.

PATHETIC. If Tennessee is looking for an easy win, why can't Hamilton schedule one of the lower division Big Ten teams (Minnesota, Indiana, Northwestern for instance), Big 12 (Iowa State, Baylor), ACC (NC State, Duke), or PAC 10 (Stanford, Washington St)? Minnesota would be a good home and home for fans who have never ventured into that part of the country. How about one of our old rivals, Georgia Tech, even though it would be a possible loss? Eight home games for season ticket holders to pay for in 2009 - two of them vs Ohio and Western Kentucky. (At least the W Ky game is the first game of the season, and I will be able to find somebody to give the tickets to. If UT loses to Florida, nobody will take the free tickets vs Ohio the week following.) If UT is going to play a Sun Belt team, make it North Texas State - a rematch of one of the three biggest debacles in Tennessee football history. UT could invite Sears Woods (3 TD for the Mean Green, including game clinching kickoff return) as that week's "Legend of Neyland Stadium."

Western Kentucky's game vs. Florida was televised on Lincoln Financial, which is now Raycom. It doesn't ensure a pay-per-view game. Hamilton didn't want a home and home, obviously, or he would have contacted other conferences. He was trying to get enough home games for 2009 and 2013. As someone pointed out earlier, we still have not scheduled a 1-AA team. Auburn and Alabama are good for one of those a year, at least. Florida's home schedule included such giants as Troy and either Florida International or Florida Atlantic, I can't remember. Either way, Ohio and Western Kentucky are at least on par with those teams, if not better. All you guys who mock "Stay the course" obviously don't see the irony that you in fact are doing the same thing by constantly complaining and criticizing.

Another sorry-azz PPV game. I will never buy one.

Chad, you have no idea what next year will be like. You have no idea what will happen with TV in 2009. You can make all the snide comments you want, but you have no way of knowing that this game will be "sure fire PPV." I'm sure that Tebow starting in his first game was a factor, too. I'm sure that us being ranked so highly in 2005 is a large part of why our game with UAB was televised. However, since it's a year and a half away, I stand by the fact that there's no way to know what will happen. That's the point.

Chad, chad, chad...your failure to understand what I say is really incomprehensible. There was a lot of hype around Tebow, therefore, interest in seeing him play. Interest = ratings. As for our game with UAB and their game with Western Ky, the commonality lies in the fact that both were available to LF and they chose to air them. As I've said from the beginning, you don't know what the next year will hold or what will be going on around the program before 2009, despite how smart you think you are. This game isn't destined to be on PPV, as you believe. I know that it's an easy way to potentially hate on Fulmer and Hamilton, and it provides a way for you to try to look clever and hilarious, but your prediction isn't as certain as you think it is.
