OAKLAND, Calif. - Point guard C.J. Watson is expected at practice today after agreeing to a 10-day contract with Golden State and should make his NBA regular season debut in Wednesday's game against Portland.
Watson, who played at Tennessee, has dominated the NBA Development League this season, averaging 26.4 points, 5.3 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, who play in McAllen, Texas, near the Mexican border. He also is shooting 51 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range.
"I'm as anxious as anybody," coach Don Nelson said of getting his first look at Watson.
Watson becomes the only former UT player in the NBA.
The Warriors are looking for a backup for Baron Davis and believe Watson could be the answer. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder played for the Spurs' summer-league team and went through training camp with the Bobcats this past year after going undrafted in 2006.
Warriors guard Kelenna Azubuike, who was called up from the D-League a year ago, played against Watson in college while at Kentucky and offered a strong endorsement.
"He's solid," Azubuike said. "A good decision-maker. I think he'll be good for this team."

Great to have a volunteer in the league again, hopefully he sticks with the warriors. They play an up-tempo style of ball that Watson should be somewhat familiar with. Even if he does not fit with the warriors, hopefully he will impress other teams and make it somewhere.
