Father: QB Mallett would consider UT if DeBord, Loeffler hired

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Ryan Mallett has left the Michigan football program, and the quarterback might be reunited with his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Tennessee.

“He’s on his way home,” his father, Jim Mallett, told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “We don’t know where he’s going to go yet, but we need to do something quick. We’re going to visit three, four or five schools.”

The former Texas Class 4A offensive player of the year may end up at Tennessee, which is considering hiring former Michigan offensive coordinator Mike DeBord and quarterbacks coach Scott Loeffler.

DeBord and Loeffler spent Tuesday night in Knoxville and will interview with Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer on Wednesday, sources told the News Sentinel.

"If they're hired, that would be a real good possibility," Jim Mallett said. "Ryan really clicked with both coach DeBord and coach Loeffler during the last couple months of the season and during bowl practices, I've never seen Ryan throw the ball or read defenses as well as he did."

Mallett said his son also will consider transferring to Texas A&M, Arkansas and UCLA among other schools. After sitting out next season, he will have three years of eligibility.

"Several schools have called and we're still open-minded about any program that runs a pro-style offense," he said. "He's going to enroll this semester, so we've got to get moving."

Mallett played in 11 games as a freshman, filling in for Chad Henne when he was injured. He was 61-of-141 for 892 yards with seven touchdown passes and five interceptions.

As soon as Lloyd Carr retired and Rich Rodriguez was hired, Mallett's days seemed to be numbered because of Rodriguez's spread offense that has featured mobile quarterbacks.

"It just wasn't a fit and yet, it was a hard decision," Jim Mallett said. "When he came home for Christmas, he told me and my wife that he really was falling in love with being at Michigan.

"Ryan wants to thank coach Carr, his staff and all the players for helping him have a great experience the past year."

PLEASE bring on the Michigan bunch. With Crompton, Mallet, and Gerald Jones showing the G-Gun now and then, we surely will be an offense to be reckoned with.

Was not Mallet the second rated quarterback in this class? Crompton plays for two years, then Mallet for two. Sounds like the advantages of a pro style offense may be greater than some of you think....

Mallett was a 5 star prospect out of Texas, he was the no. 1 overall prospect in the state of Texas, the no. 2 pro-style quarterback in the country and the no. 4 overall prospect in the country according to rivals.com

I hope CPF doesn't hire a coach or coaches based on a player they might bring with them.

Look at what happened at Arkansas with Mitch Mustain and Gus Malzahn. I'm not saying that's what would happen if Mallett comes with the coaches, but I hate a kid playing the game of going where his coaches go.

With or without Mallett, we will be in good shape at QB for the next few years. Crompton was the top rated dual threat QB in the nation when he came out of high school in 2005.

Nick Stephens is said to have the strongest arm on the team, and Coleman was hand-picked by David Cutcliffe during the recruiting process, which say something to me.

If Mallett does come, he probably won't start until 2010 when he'll have two years of eligibility left. Chances are he'd have to beat out Coleman or some other QB we sign in the next two years.

I could be wrong, but if Stephens doesn't beat out Crompton for the starting job this year, I don't know if he would stay...especially if Mallett signs.

That's a lot of speculation on my part, but isn't that what most of us do?

No doubt kid has a HUGE gun! Saw it first hand in San Antonio at the Army All American Game LY. He would be a major addition to the team and would push Crompton to seriously improve his skills this spring. Agree with FWBVol, though. Can't hire a coach just to get one kid unless he'll better the program for years to come. Hello Wade Houston!!

FWBvol I'm with you on hiring the mich coaches to get this kid... the mich coaches are not my number one pick anyway but if this kid would come that would be good....

everybody needs to read between the lines fulmer is looking for someone to come in and run tn playbook, not be that creative, just minor adjustments if any.... i suppose he could create the pro style spread option :)

we better get some receivers and running backs that can run faster than foster, taylor and the others because they couldn't out run trooper if that is the direction we're headed in..

lets hope we turn into an attacking offense and not the 3 yard dink and dunk again.

Who cares if they bring a player with them? Their ability to coach, recruit and develop players is what counts. I thought all you boys wanted to switch to a mobile Qb and spread offense and get "modern"? Too bad he is not a 5 star defensive tackle. That is what we need.

WOW!!! I would love to see this guy come to UT. I would hate if or BJ Coleman (but that might push both to work even harder). Imagine how good it would make our 2007 recruiting class and the future. I don't think a lot of people are realizing the people we have coming to UT next seaaon. We have Morley and Faison coming in to make a big impact next year. Pair up those two with Eric "I'll cover everything" Berry and we WILL havet the best backfield in the Nation.
On the other side of the ball, we will have G-Gun with a year of experience and a seasoned offensive line. Mark it down now... McClendon will have a BREAK OUT year. He will dominate the OG position like John Henderson dominated the end position his junior year. I LOVE what we will be doing next year... only 9 more months fellas

If Mallett came in and outplayed Crompton, and BJ...............would you care? I think not... its about winning, Fulmer promises you a chance to compete for a position every year your here...he does not guarantee you will get it.

No way Mallett backs up Coleman, if Mallett comes to UT. I think Coleman is a great kid, but Mallett is a very rare talent and would move up the depth chart in a hurry, once eligible in 2009.

I hope Mallett chooses to come to Knoxville! He'd be terrific as a Vol.

I think this is great news all the way around. Has anyone heard anything about Demps today?

Posted by FWBVol on January 9, 2008 at 3:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The real question becomes what kind of offense is most attractive to kids wanting to make the jump to the NFL. The spread is a nice twist for college kids, but I still don't see too many pro quarterbacks doing the same things Tebow does at Florida.

Alex Smith played for Urban at Utah and look at the smooth transition (sarcasm) Smith has made to the pro game. Name one NFL team that is successful with the spread or variation of it.

Does the UT system need some fine tuning and updating? Yes, but do you throw the whole thing out the window for the latest fad in hopes of running an offense that needs a very rare and special kind of athlete.

I think the one thing most of us want more than anything else, is to see UT win. If we win, I don't think it would matter if we ran a wishbone or power I, if the Vols were winning a lot of the crying would stop and everyone would be glad we were champs.

I got news for ya guys. If Mallett ends up here, he could and probably will beat out any qb we have. Don't get me wrong. I am a big Crompton fan and I am extremely high on the Coleman kid from Chattanooga, but this Mallett kid is a monster. A freakin' stud! I guess that would be a great problem to have, huh? 3 big-time quarterbacks battling for a starting position.

Posted by theutb on January 9, 2008 at 3:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Okay, I hate to be the negative person on this forum, but hold the phone, folks. I realize that this QB is highly rated out of high school, and I realize this year he was only a freshman, but have you seen his numbers?

61 for 141 (43 percent) for 7 TDS and 5 INTS? Granted, 892 yards, but 97 from one bomb play?

He only played a good amount in three games this year, including in a 37-21 loss to Wisconsin, where he was 11 of 36 with 3 TDs and 2 INTs?

I'm not saying he's not good, he may be, and he may be the man under our offense. But I'm not ready to put him ahead of Crompton, Coleman or Stephens. In my opinion, from what I've heard, Nick Stephens will be the man anyway.

We certainly shouldn't hire two coaches just to get this QB. If we are hiring them based on their ability, great. But I'm not sure that Mallet won't be mediocre at best.

If you've not seen Coleman play, he is the real deal. He's got all the tools and a natural leader. He will push Crompton this spring.

i am tiried of the pro style qb. To win at the college level u must have a qb that can tuck it and run. we need a oc that fits jon crompton style of play. The kid can run thru and around and still has a cannon. next year should be exiting with jon. Thank god quaterback that can scramble been waiting on this since 99

Did anyone research Clawson? - he has a proven track record and is aggressive on offense - sounds like he is on his way to becoming a head coach at a much higher level - 5 years at TN as OC would be a win win - IF his credentials continue to progress at TN - maybe he's our next Head Coach..... he sounds like the next Jim Tressel to me. I have not researched his skills as a recruiter however.

Posted by invisiblekid on January 9, 2008 at 4:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think Mallett would look fine in Orange. No doubt, the vertical passing game would/should come back into vogue with him under center. From what little I have seen, he probably needs some time to work on his footwork and reading defenses but that's true of most young QB's. It's not likely Fulmer would base any staffing decision on the mere chance of getting Mallet in the deal though, and if he did he should be fired. You can't mortgage an entire program on the back of one player.

FWBVol.... I was thinking the same thing. Name the 5 best QB's in the NFL.
both Mannings
Brady
Farve
Romo
Big Ben
what kind of system did they run in college and what kind do the run now? Pocket passing. Now, let's take the first 5 "new phenom" Qb's in college who were going to "redefine" the way NFL played the QB position.

Chris Leak
Troy Smith
Alex Smith
Michael Vick (legal troubles aside)
Quincy Carter
Vince Young

Not one solid 5 star recruit that I know of would say I only want to play college football... the NFL doesn't appeal to me. They all want to make it to the NFL.... so why not go to a school that will do all it can to make sure you make the next jump into the NFL?

sjt18,

Mallett would apparently have 3 years of eligibility after sitting out the 2008 season. That would have him getting two good years (afer Crompton leaves in '09 to prove his NFL talent. He would have 2010 and 2011 to lead the program (provided he beats out Coleman).

B.J. is a Tennessee kid and always a fan. He has publically said he's not following Cut. He led the state (Mr. Football) in passing yards from an option offense. He can tuck it and run too.

Sorry Mallett, coach Fulmer wouldn't/shouldn't hire staff based soley on a prospective recruit's familiarity with them. That's just not good business. If the UT program is not sound enough on it's own merits, then this is not a situation that Fulmer needs to look at. Yes, Mallett may come with prototypical height, weight, arm, etc., but he also comes with a disclaimer. Thanks, but no thanks.

I've been telling people for awhile now that the more teams decide to go to all out spread offense, the better for UT, because the best pro style quarterbacks will be filtered to a team that runs the pro style offense. It may be looking too far ahead, but we could be looking at a string of great NFL pro quarterbacks coming through UT. I think Ainge did a great job this year without a true deep threat. If you surround him with good talent he could easily be a Derrick Anderson style QB. How nice would it be to have at least three young UT alum playing each other in the NFL trying to gun for UT's greatest alum QB.

Posted by sjt18 on January 9, 2008 at 5:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Loeffler has more value to the program than Mallett does. The guy is a proven recruiter and coach. Loeffler without Mallett would make a bigger difference than Mallett without Loeffler.

... The pair though isn't a bad deal.

Bolton as someone mentioned Mallett was by far and away the most impressive QB in the Army AA game last year. BJ could beat him out... but it will never be because he is more physically gifted. Mallett is a pretty incredible physical specimen.

Yes, what IPO said.

Posted by FWBVol on January 9, 2008 at 5:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

RealistVolfF, the key word you just said is potential. From what I've read and heard, Stephens he has a gun for an arm and good football smarts. I've never seen himm play so I don't really know about that.

What I do know is the QB with the most potential doesn't always turn out to be the top gun. Here are a few examples from UT in the last 20 years.

Sterling Henton was a very athletic quarterback with an electric personality, but he lost his job to Andy Kelly. Peyton vs. Brandon Stewart, and it should have been a no brainer, Stewart had more physical potential. The same could be said about Schaffer and Ainge. Schaffer was one of the most physically gifted quarterbacks to ever set foot on campus, but he was a total disaster.

I'm not implying that Mallett is a bad kid or a player that couldn't get the job done. I'm just pointing out that there's a lot more to playing quarterback at any level than potential.

I hate quoting Bear Bryant, but he said, "Don't tell a kid he has potential because all you're saying is he hasn't done anything yet."

QB Mallett would consider UT if DeBord, Loeffler hired.

i see it as loeffler is the one phil wants, mallett could be a huge bonus down the road and debord is currently unemployed and would only hang around long enough to catch on elsewhere but in the meentime we would recv his talents for little of nothing.

i say it would be a win win win for our fav team.

go vols and i appreciate the patience coach is showing putting together another proven winning/recruiting coaching staff.

you negavols will never ever have a clue of the talent/commitment,dedication,honesty,work ethic and love for tennessee that phil fulmer has.

Y'all can yammer about this kid all ya want, but we've been through this time and again over the years - how many "blue chip" QBs have passed through Knoxville and not proven that they can do anything other than transfer elsewhere?

I certainly don't want Fulmer choosing coaches on the basis of who they can attract, as much as proven coaches that have been at the big time and know what they are doing.

Having said this, are these two potential coaches winners, or just warm bodies looking to land at another high profile football program? I'm still remembering the butt-kicking from Oregon in Ann Arbor this year - is that the kind of offense we would be getting??

Posted by knoxvegas75 on January 9, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The first thing you are all forgetting about Mallett is that he played for Michigan, they have been a decline not being able to beat Ohio State and consistently playing in average bowls. Tennessee has been known for establishing pro-style qb's and Mallett will flourish with TN help. He is going to hit our system and our facilities and training staff and in one year will fight for the starting role.

I do agree the thought of just getting Loeffer is better then not getting either but the package deal will give Tennessee the depth and ability. Competition for a starting position will help all involved making them better.

If you pull this all off CPF you are the greatest.

tabjack0522 has stated, in a very mysterious way, that 'my source also told me there is a BIG SURPRISE no one will see coming...it has something to do with a hire on the coaching staff.'
Some things are so obvious, so visible, so out there, that no one would have thought about it, unless you have examined every possibility.
Coach Fulmer will be announcing his resignation and at the same time announcing the new head coach tomorrow or Friday.
If I guess correctly, I should win a season pass to the Tennessee games next year!

IPO is right on! Scoring offense wasn't this teams problem - scoring defense was. I thin Loeffler is a great choice for QB coach. If Mallett wants to come to, so be it but that's just a bonus. Phil, hire the coach because he can coach and let the recruitment of Mallett stay a separate, secondary issue. Go Vols!!!

I like the pro-style offense. It allows you to attack all parts of the defense and it's better for running the football. You can always spread it out too. If we want the best QB's to come to U.T., stay with the pro-style "O"!

Tebow will be an H-Back or Outside linebacker if he plays on Sundays. He's a mutant, a monster! But, not a guy who can take 'PRO-HITS' over and over and over again...

WINNING:
"It's about talent anyway, always will be!!!"

You 'can not scheme your way' to an SEC Championship. You must put the best TEAM of "ATHLETES" on the field, period!!!

I'm going to preface this comment by noting that nothing is complete yet, but I feel like the fans that support this program in a positive way deserve this...

In the days and weeks following the exit of David Cutcliffe, we heard constant negativity surrounding Fulmer on this website. Though I realize this doesn't typify the normal Vol fan, it disgusts me that there are constant doubters as to the ability of coach "Foolmer". He not only picked up one of the top 25 recruiters in a RB coach from FLORIDA, he will likely pick up an offensive genius in Clawson, who is innovative and up-and-coming. Then there will likely be Debord and Loeffler, two strong TE and QB coaches...so now do we hate Fulmer for being methodical and choosing the right men?

These "fans" who have been constantly ragging on Fulmer for being stupid and failing to get a coach soon enough (you know who you are, we've dealt with your incessant nagging), shut your mouths and let the process work itself out...Fulmer got this far because he's got some capability upstairs and has won a game or two in his life. However, I'm not surprised that you found a way to doubt the ability of Mallett. If we recruited Peyton Manning again, I'm sure some would find ways to criticize.

LET THE PROCESS WORK ITSELF OUT, AND IF IT ISN'T UP TO PAR, THEN SAY SOMETHING...but I'll be damned if I sit back and listen to this bashing when Fulmer is about to get it done.

GO VOLS..

Let the spin continue...

Posted by FWBVol on January 9, 2008 at 6:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

philfan, I don't think Coach Fulmer is going anywhere right now. He's already stated his desire to win another national championship. He's not a kid any more, but he won't turn 60 until Sept. 1, 2010. I believe he has a fire in his belly to win and win big soon.

Fulmer had his first team meeting of the new year yesterday or today, and I have to believe, if what you are speculating on is true, he would have at least told his players. They would deserve to know. He'd also have to get the word out to recruits to be fair to them as well.

If someone really wanted to start a wild rumor, they could say that Peyton Manning is going to retire and return to UT as the QB coach and offensive coordinator with the promise he'll take over when CPF retires.

Hey, if we are going to dream big, we might as well dream the impossible dream. LOL

The longer the process drags on, the more I believe it points to Clawson being the OC. The reason the announcement not coming yet might be so he can get back to Richmond and tell his team in person.

I really don't see CPF making someone a promise that they will follow him as the next head coach. Maybe in a couple of years once that person has shown they can get the job done for the Vols it would happen, but not now. Besides, the AD, UT president and athletics board would have to sign off on any changes.

That's another reason I don't believe CPF is stepping down now...there are too many people that would know about it for it not to leak.

I loved all the hate prior to this coming out today. Everyone jumping on Fulmer because he either didn't know who to hire or couldn't hire the right people. Who knows if these are the right guys, but everyone sure seems happy all of a sudden.....I'm a vol fan through and through, its just kind of disappointing that it took this to make all of happy and rejoice.

vol52 says-Fulmer is a micro manager we are in trouble. He is no big swing from an intellectual standpoint.

no contradiction but:

if you choose to put down my fav coach from my fav team then i choose to call you out.

again what is your claim to fame, just for kicks lets compare your intellectual standpoint to coach fulmers.

have you won a national championship and do you make 2 million dollars a year,i didnt think so,you may now stfu!

While I agree with everything you say to a big ole power Tee, I think your being a tad on the insultive side for no reason. Yes, there are plenty of negative ninnies on this board who routinely make fools of themselves, but there is no need in us using the same tactics to point it out!

FWBVol,

You may be right but this is about the third time I have heard the rumor that something big, something unimaginable, is soon to be announced. Unless Steve Spurrier or Nick Saban are planning on accepting demotions to move to Knoxville to become assistant Tennessee coaches, I believe Fulmer will indeed announce his resignation and announce his successor. I just cannot understand the mystery of it all. That would be huge! Maybe Fulmer is going to the NFL. As far as the recruits are concerned, this is supposed to be the so called dead period for recruiting. Fulmer has taken a lot of heat for not winning some serious hardware in nine years, and he may be looking forward to leaving coaching.

Posted by tngeoff on January 9, 2008 at 8:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

philfan.

Just for a "heads up." The chance of Fulmer resigning? Absolute zero.

Now, that being said. The chances of chief resigning. That is an entirely different issue.

posivol The VOLS are my favorite team. I have followed them since Wyatt was coach. History will judge Fulmer. He has been in a decline for several years. He may revive the program or may not. I have lost faith in him. He needs strong people (coaches and player arround him) and let them do their thing.

philfan, I could be wrong, but I think coaches can still e-mail during the dead period. Also, if a kid calls the coach, I believe a coach can return his call.

This being the dead period for recruiting would be another reason it would look bad if CPF resigned now with recruits hanging in the wind.

Everyone does a great job of guessing, but I don't see Chavis stepping down either. I could be wrong though. If Chavis does resign, I don't think Jim Bates will come in as some people are guessing. He's older than Fulmer and has spent the last several years in the NFL.

One thing is certain, if Phillip Fulmer plans on having his OC, and most of the staff in place by the time recruits come in this weekend we'll know something in the next day or two.

I gotta' hit the hay. The reason I ask about the Tri Cities is I travel A LOT. Last year on a trip back from Philly I connected either through Detroit or Clevelend and sat next to a pretty good size guy who was from the Tri Cities and had taken a job in the auto industry up there. If I recall correctly (I'm in the health and wellness business) the guy said he had taken something up there that had turned to permanent and he and his wife were moving up there. May have been a different guy, but just curious.

GerryOp.

I don't think you and I ever talked about your having lived in the Commonwealth of Massachussetts before. I've had plenty of contracts all over that state and my oldest brother has a couple of summer homes in Dennis, MA.

Anyway, Thunder out.

dfreeman and every other Vol-

Please let me apologize for the queenofmemphis. Not all of us Memphians are that bad. Well those of us who wear Orange. I have lived in Memphis and Knoxville (did undergrad there) and have to say that I would love to go back to Knoxville if I did not have such a wonderful job and family here.

Most of the Memphis fans here are bandwagon fans who come out of the closet when the teams start winning. Their best team on campus is the Trap Shooting team (National Champs). Most of the basketball team are thugs. Talked to a member of the U of M police recently who was so disgusted at the fact that Dorsey has committed at least 30 or so offenses that the ordinary person would be jailed for, but the higher ups continue to cover it up. He apparently is down to his last offence NCAA wise on failed drug tests. Had another player there tell a friend that coach Cal said he could get him a job at McDonald's making $50 an hour and he would only have to come clock in and out.

One last thing. Two different college coaches have told me that Callipari is widely considered the biggest dirtball recruiter in most coaching circles.

Queen, Elvis has been dead for over 30 years now, so cry your tear and leave the Tennessee message boards for the Tennessee fans, not the Tiger High fans.

Actually I moved right across the line to Mississippi where it is safer and cheaper, so you better go calling Arkansas if your looking to get rid of the city bc most people down here moved here for a reason.

I'm hoping Clawson is the guy. I agree with those who have expressed wanting the Loeffler/Clawson package. DeBord might be a nice position coach, but I really can't see someone that has been a HC and OC in his last two jobs take a spot as tight ends coach. I could be wrong, but I believe since Michigan fired the coaches for RR to bring in his own people, the guys should get paid for the 2008 season as they were under a two-year contract.

Being patient is hard right now, but I trust CPF will do the right thing. I would bet my last dollar he has two of the three coaches in place by the weekend when the recruits visit.

Sources close to the Tennessee football program have told CSTV.com that Dave Clawson has accepted the offensive coordinator position with the Vols.

As CSTV.com first reported earlier in the week, Clawson, the head coach at FCS-affiliated Richmond, was among the leading candidates for the job after interviewing in Knoxville Monday. An announcement is expected to come down Friday.

Clawson guided the Spiders to the FCS semifinals this past season where they lost to eventual national champion Appalachian State. He was named the 2002 I-AA Coach of the Year and had previously been the offensive coordinator with Villanova.

I hear Jonathan Crompton has been dating one of Fulmer's girls.. I don't think that's really smart, cause he could still end up sitting on the bench, and after seeing him a few times this year, he looks lazy and lacksadasial to me like he thinks he's got it made in the shade at UT for some reason.. I think this might wake Jon Crompton up some and push him back to the level he played in High School in NC before he got to the big leagues.. I'm not 100% I'm comfortable with Crompton at QB next fall at this point.
