Ironcity, I'm with you. I had no idea he was even considering it. The only ones that had been mentioned were Mayo, Arian, Anthony Parker and Colquitt.

Agree with the comments so far, the one really bright area is the OL for next year. Lots of experience and good play especially in the passing game. Look forward to seeing A. Foster return. Everybody needs depth in the running game.

it will be good to know whoever is behind center will be protected. Hopefully Arian Foster will see his stock can rise behind an experienced line. I believe he will be back I don't see him going until after 5th round. I hope he sees that.

And having a qb that can run even a little bit gives defenders just one more thing to think about when they are trying to sift thru our motions and handoff/fakes etc. i.e. qb that might run should help our rbs a little bit, not to mention any new coaches that might coach line differently and scheme things up.

O-Line a definite strength for the Vols in '08==A+
QB should be an improvement, maybe not stat-wise but effectiveness to score and not turn ball over==B, mainly from inexperience, stock should rise.
RB This is also unproven territory, due to limited playing time, if Foster goes pro. Back ups should be improvement, NEW COACH adds excitement.==B
TE== should be more involved with the talent==C+
DL=????
LB==????
Secondary should be a A++++
and when Chavis has a A++++ secondary..can you say "Blitz Package?"..Chavis has be known to blitz more often when he has a strong secondary..mainly LBS get more sacks and hurries..
I think Mayo should rethink his decision..he could go from a mid 3rd round pick to a definite 1st round pick with a stat full year he would have next year..guess Rico will get that honor now
Kicking game/special teams should be==B+
Coaching staff comes along like it keeps sounding like..
ANYONE KNOW THE LASTEST SCOOP????..
Clawson sounds like a good fit..along side new rb coach, previous history..think that was a clue as to wich way Fulmer was Leaning with OC job..
VOLS LOOK GREAT FOR '08

Sources close to the Tennessee football program have told CSTV.com that Dave Clawson has accepted the offensive coordinator position with the Vols.
As CSTV.com first reported earlier in the week, Clawson, the head coach at FCS-affiliated Richmond, was among the leading candidates for the job after interviewing in Knoxville Monday. An announcement is expected to come down Friday.
Clawson guided the Spiders to the FCS semifinals this past season where they lost to eventual national champion Appalachian State. He was named the 2002 I-AA Coach of the Year and had previously been the offensive coordinator with Villanova.

Foster, Parker, and Colquitt returning is a lot bigger deal than A Foster or even Mayo. If UT wins anything next year, it will be because of those 7 or 8 OL's they bring back with GREAT experience and talent.

Phil Kaplan: Your guys need to step up ASAP! :)
Posted by bedmagic_23 on January 10, 2008 at 6 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I totally believe that CSTV.com report. I had just got online to say that I believe the reason the staff has not been announced is Fulmer locking up the assistants. I'm sure that they want to announce the rest of the staff at the same time. I don't believe that Loeffler or Debord are going to join the staff, although I hope so. They left town after their interviews and you would think they'd stay in town for the press conference if they were joining the staff. I also heard that Mallett is considering UCLA and other schools today as opposed to Tenn and other schools. It was believed that UCLA was the other school that had been running neck and neck with Tenn. for Loeffler.

Spoke to a friend who is an Ark fan today. Their boards lit up last night with numerous stories saying Mallett would be a Hog. He has family there. The new coaching staff fits him... and he wouldn't have much competition for the job.
UCLA and UT have a much more competitive situation at QB than Ark. All they have is the two Dick brothers. He could probably beat either out throwing left handed. If he goes there, the only downside will be that he won't be eligible to play UF this year.
UT won't pick them up until he leaves... and Ark probably won't have the total talent to get to the CG within that period.

I'm glad that Foster is staying (even though I didn't know he was leaving) but I really want to know about the coaching situation. How did the interviews go? Are we close to hiring anyone. I know that most of us are a little too obsessed but give us some info on the coaching vacancies!!!

I think a lot of potential UT recruits are waiting to see what happens with the coaches. I hope Fulmer will announce tomorrow and get the class of 2008 moving forward. Maybe we can go from ranked 44th (rivals) to the top ten where we belong.

I think that they would already have announced something unless this is really going to be big, or on the other hand there could be big trouble brewing. Probably the former. This has got to be about more than one hire.

Superstars do not win championships. Team work always rules (see UT 1998 National Champions). I think 2008 or 2009 UT will be a Champion once again. We are young and if Fulmer brings in the final pieces, WE WILL RULE! Next season reminds me of '98'. As you recall we lost the superstar QB, but the team became one. Anyone else think so?
Posted by voltan on January 10, 2008 at 9:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Great hire Phil. Maybe we will not be so predictable with Clawson. Also good hire with Brayton as running back coach. Keep up the good work and finish out the staff strong. I'm not worried about losing Mich coaches and qb they would bring because we have great prospects already. What I would really love to hear is that we got a great DL player. Good job keeping OL together for another year. Now work on Arian, what a workhorse. We can always bring in others for change of pace and speed. Once you finish the staff, they can go to work to coach up the talent. Have a great offseason so we can have a great season next year and beat both FL and AL

CBS 6 Richmond story has changed to confirmation!!!!
Clawson Leaving Richmond Spiders
Posted: Jan 10, 2008 05:55 PM EST
Multiple sources have confirmed to us tonight that Richmond football coach Dave Clawson has accepted an offer to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee.
The official announcement is expected sometime later tomorrow after Clawson meets with his players on campus.
Clawson interviewed for the position on monday....and had to wait until late this afternoon before it was officially offered.
This year's Spiders set school records for wins and points scored in a season while advancing all the way to the 1-AA national semifinals.
Clawson had agreed to a contract extention with Richmond last week...but sources have told us his deal with Tennessee is expected to be worth 400-thousand dollars per year....or about 100-thousand more than his extention was worth with the Spiders.
Speculation has already begun about a replacement....with Virginia defensive coordinator Mike London and South Florida offensive coordinator...and former Spider and Lee-Davis standout Greg Gregory heading the list

we need another QB like Tee Martin and crompton is the closest thing to that since Tee

every qb since shular has been taught that if nothing was open to get outside the tackle and throw to a fan except Tee, he could fall down and gain 5 yards

Foster's brother Renardo played for Louisville and he is now the starting right tackle for the Atlanta Falcons. I played against both in high school and they were both beasts. Amazing how much bigger Foster has gotten since high school. Great choice big man. Represent West Tennessee well in the trenches.

Is the other foster leaving?
I would if I were him. His limit is natural ability (speed) which is not going to get better. He is a late rounder this year or next.
I don't think another 1,000 yard season does much for him. He is the least exciting UT running back I can remember in recent times but you can't argue with his numbers. 879 as a freshmen...
