'Perfect fit for new era'

Clawson will be introduced as new offensive coordinator

University of Richmond coach Dave Clawson will be introduced as Tennessee's offensive coordinator at a 10 a.m. press conference Saturday in the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center.

Clawson interviewed for the job on Monday and accepted an offer to be offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Thursday night.

"I am very excited about naming Dave Clawson as our new offensive coordinator," UT coach Phillip Fulmer said in a release. "I have thoroughly enjoyed the search and research process, and there certainly was a lot of interest in this position. I took the attitude that this was a great opportunity for me to evaluate the coaching talent out there and find the perfect fit for a new era of Tennessee offensive football."

According the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Tennessee offered Clawson $1.2 million over three years.

UT will not release financial details of its new hires until all the Vols' positions are filled.

Richmond wide receivers coach Latrell Scott, who was scheduled to meet with Fulmer on Friday, also is expected to be part of UT's revamped offensive staff.

Clawson's hire ends a nearly month-long process that began when David Cutcliffe was introduced as Duke's coach on Dec. 15.

Shortly thereafter, wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor announced his departure to become co-offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. Following UT's 21-17 victory over Wisconsin on Jan. 1 in the Outback Bowl, running backs coach Kurt Roper and tight ends coach Matt Luke left to join Cutcliffe's staff at Duke.

Tennessee, which hired former Florida assistant Stan Drayton earlier this week to coach running backs, has one position left to fill on its offensive staff, most likely a tight ends coach to replace Luke.

That hire is expected to take some additional time.

Clawson met with his staff Friday morning and his team Friday afternoon. He was expected in Knoxville on Friday night, where he will meet with recruits spending the weekend here on official visits.

In a press conference held in Richmond on Friday afternoon, Clawson said he was not looking to leave the Spiders but couldn't pass on a chance to coach at a BCS school.

"This was always a goal professionally and a dream of mine," Clawson said.

A mutual friend put Clawson in touch with Fulmer, who invited him for an interview on Sunday.

Clawson said he has had other discussions with Division I schools, and one of his players, quarterback Will Healy, said Boston College spoke with Clawson last year about its head coaching job.

"This is the first one that really excited me that I wanted to pursue," Clawson said. "I really believe that Tennessee is one of the premier football teams in the country. I was very impressed with (Fulmer). I really hope that I help contribute to the goal of Tennessee to win a national championship."

Fulmer was equally impressed with Clawson, who helped the Spiders an 11-3 finish - the best in school history - in his fourth season at the Football Championship Subdivision school.

"Dave Clawson brings a great work ethic, high energy and is a great teacher of quarterbacks," Fulmer said. "His multiple offensive system using the talents of the players available to their fullest has been impressive. He has a great passion for recruiting, which is important for Tennessee, and his experience as a head coach will serve us well."

Before going to Richmond, Clawson spent five seasons as coach at Fordham and three seasons as Villanova's offensive coordinator, where he worked with Drayton.

This season, Richmond's offense averaged 234.6 yards per game, 12th best in FCS, and 405.4 yards and 34.9 points per game. The Spiders also set 10 school records this season, including points (489), touchdowns (63), total offense (5,675 yards) and rushing offense (3,284 yards).

During the 2005 and 2006 seasons, Richmond combined for a school-record 8,817 yards of total offense.

Scott, 32, coached for two seasons at Fork Union Military Academy after graduating from Hampton in 1999 following an All-American career as a tight end.

He has been at Richmond since 2005, following three years at VMI as wide receivers coach and a year at Western Carolina in 2001.

Tennessee interviewed at least three other candidates for the offensive coordinator job: former Michigan offensive coordinator Mike DeBord, Clemson offensive coordinator Rob Spence and San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti.

UT also spoke with former assistant coach Kippy Brown, who has since been promoted to passing game coordinator and assistant head coach with the NFL's Detroit Lions.

Former Michigan quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler also interviewed.

Drew Edwards covers University of Tennessee football. He may be reached at 865-342-6274.

WELCOME COACH!
Now get to work!

Go Vols 2008!

That leaves 1 or 2 openings, right? So are any of the UM coaches still in the mix for those positions? I heard Clawson is bringing one member of his staff but that's about it.

Ok, Mr. Clawson...you are in the driver's seat to take UT to the next level. My guess is that your honeymoon with UT fans will last until the 2nd or 3rd game this upcoming season, then be prepared to be scrutized a little closer. You have been a OC and a HC, so I know you are up for the task. Remember, this IS the SEC, so big things are expected of you. Reward the fans with a high octane offense, and you will be in the drivers seat for CPF seat when he's ready to ride off into the sunset. Good luck and GOD speed ahead. GO VOLS!

Chavis has incentives I think that put him there or better if I remember right.

There is one position to fill now. I wish it could be Loeffler but probably not. Good chance that one won't be filled until later.

Scott and Drayton could make a great recruiting tandem.

I think this is the second great hire this week. Now we just need to fill in the last few spots with the same level of quality and get some consistency on defense.

There was a rumor earlier that Clawson was bringing a young receivers coach with him (Coach Scott?), but neither the Richmond paper web site nor KNS has mentioned him lately.

Things are looking up in the Vol Nation. A strong mens & womens basketball program and a Football team that is taking the right steps to regain their place among the nations elite.

A few thoughts:

I'm very glad about this hire. I honestly know nothing about the guy other than the quips about him on the internet. From all indications he is a fresh, young coach who knows how to get the most out of talent. He favors the pro-style offense and will fit our philosophy at UT. He'll have something to prove at the SEC level, so hopefully we'll see new ideas and creativity.

I don't want to burst this bubble, but if there is one thing I'm sure of the old adage "Success begins and ends on signing day" is true. I'm not exactly sure what this guy brings that Cutcliffe didn't. Cutcliffe isn't getting a HC position (for the 2nd time) because he's a fool. I don't believe Tennesseee's weakness was ever Cutcliffe. The biggest positive to bringing this guy on board is his newness, his freshness, and his history outside the program. It might just be the shot in the arm we needed.

But it all comes down to recruiting. Let's see if these guys can get it done if not this year then NEXT.

newtonrail,

I think Chief has the same deal as Cut had and this year his salary would have gone to $375 K anyway. I'm sure they can find an extra $25 K without too much of a disruption in the athletic department budget. But I still bet you are right and ticket prices will go up a buck or two. Amazing how much money 2 dollars per ticket per home game means - $1.4 Million or so with 7 home games. Wow! Go Vols!!!

So the hold all this time was just finding someone with the initials DC? J/K

Must have been the negotiations to overcome what Richmond was counter offering.

Look forward to return to emphasis on run game.

Notice that Fulmer has hired an OC that is all about a balanced, pro style offense. Also with the initials D.C. (first name David or Dave). Coincedence?

Good call, vol_in_lsu_land. Offense hasn't been a weakness the last few years. Hopefully, Clawson will keep us moving in the same direction that Cutcliffe was headed. In the meantime, we need recruiting and defense!!

I read some where that Cut was getting 340 - 375K / year and we bring this guy in at 400K? Seems to me he may have taken 350 - 375, which is still better than the Richmond HC job.

I dont know, being tight with the money isnt always the best option (Washington Capitals just signed Alexander Oveckin to a 13 year 124 Mil deal and thats in the NHL)

I'm glad to see the positions are being filled. Who am I to say if the selections are right or not. I'd just like to see a SEC Championship in '09 and a NC in '10!

I think having a OC/QB coach is the best combo. The QB and Coach need to be on the same page. No middle man. This guy can do that, he was a head coach in the toughest division 1 2A conference. Surely he can do this. Now Fulmer just needs to let him spread his wings.

Savage: You may end up thanking me... :)

Posted by DennisVols on January 11, 2008 at 1:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The Vols offense under Cut may not have been a weakness but it neither was a strength.
1) Too much reliability on the pass when the running game did not develop early on.
2) Very conservative. Coach Cut has always had a reluctance to throw down the middle of the field. Look at the tapes of Peyton’s years and you will see the pattern of only throwing side-line patterns. The few times Peyton threw down the middle it was due to him checking off primary receivers. This is a pattern our opponents have recognized for years and has hurt the passing game by forcing us to go short quick hit type passes.
3) Predictable: The only changes in our offensive plan since coach Cut first arrived was those have baked attempts at the “G” gun this year. Ainge and the offense drives the field and then for apparently no good reason Ainge is pulled for 3 trick plays that seem to fool no one.
4) While I believe it was Cut who brought back a higher level of discipline on and off the field several players have never seemed to reach their full potential or been used to it. How does he not play Hardesty the entire game against Bama this year? Don’t kid yourself that was not Fulmer’s decision. Cut had full control of the reigns of this offense. Fulmer trusted him, maybe too much at times.
5) An un-willingness to change: I am not a supporter of the “Spread”. It has too many weaknesses like getting your QB injured and then your team falls apart. (See UF, OU, CAL) But not being able to install changes in what you do and how you do it makes it too easy for any good DC to figure out your game plan. Has not anyone else noticed how many times our opponents defense was right where we were going before we got there?
UT’s offense needs new life in it. Not a complete over-haul but a new way of doing what we do right. The field has to be stretched down the middle of you expect the running game to be truly effective. A two back system some of the time so the D-line has to account for more than one runner. Those are just a couple of things Clawson will bring to UT that coach Cut was either unable or unwilling to do. I wish coach Cut all the best at Duke. He will need it.

Welcome coach! No matter what anyone tells you there is no way you know what you are in for when you run through the "T" for the first time. There is nothing that can be told to you to prepare you for that. Trust me. The most useful thing I can think to tell you is to keep telling yourself not to fall because your legs will be jello and your heart will be beating out of your chest. You might want to get close to the back the first time.

Can you tell me if Dave operates the "spread offense"?

Posted by bigbluevol on January 11, 2008 at 1:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Under Clawson's direction, the youthful Spiders were an offensive juggernaut. The team shattered 10 single-season records in 2007, including points (489), scoring average (34.9), touchdowns (63), total offense (5,675) and rushing yards (3,284). Six freshmen or sophomores started regularly on offense, eight more on defense and the Spiders were without the services of three All-Conference selections most of the season due to injury.

The most interesting part of this (which came from Richmond's website) is the last part. This shows that he has no reservations about playing young guys. This is an exciting hire and great time to be a Vol.

I predicted in an earlier post that Clawson would be both OC and QB coach. I don't think it's necessary to combine the two positions as the offense under Phillip Fulmer put up some great numbers while he also was the O-line coach. The big thing is having a OC that will get the most out of the talent on the field. It sounds like Dave Clawson is that kind of guy.

Posted by invisiblekid on January 11, 2008 at 2:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tendencies, it's all about tendencies when it comes to playcalling IMO. It's not like there are that many plays out there that has not been called before and the opposing defense has not seen. Of course, you could throw the old between-the-legs, offensive line standing around, fumblerooskie at the defense and it might work.

Seriously though, given the choices, I believe Clawson is the right one for the position. I believe he will bring a break in those tendencies that the Vols had fallen into under Cutcliffe and Sanders. Based on what little I know about his career and seeing Richmond play a few times, I also think he will bring the ability to adapt the offense as needed. Not pound the rock, not dink and dunk, not stay the course, just doing whatever it takes to win. All indications are that he will also maintain the discipline that Cutcliffe brought back to the offense.

No one can be 100% sure he is the right man for the job until the end of next season but Fulmer deserves credit for making this choice. If nothing else, it shows that he is willing to step out onto the ledge a little.

From CPF's statement, "....there certainly was a lot of interest in this position. I took the attitude that this was a great opportunity for me to evaluate the coaching talent out there and find the perfect fit for a new era of Tennessee offensive football," it sounds like there was a lot of interest in this job.

Some people constantly bash CPF and claim the delay in the process shows he didn't have much to choose from. Those people are wrong.

I am a CPF supporter, as I have stated many times before. But I also believe that if Mickey Mouse were head coach, UT would still have had their choice of great ocaches interested in the jobs available, because of what Tennessee represents, the facilities, the fan base...

We need to get some more new blood. The tight
end position coach is still open. There is another Division I-AA coach whose blood runs orange. He is the assistant head coach, recruiting
cordinator, passing game cordinator, and wide receivers coach at Charleston Southern University. He coached tight ends previously at CSU and also at ETSU. His recruiting area is Georgia and Florida. Any who knows football knows that it is harder to recruit at that level than IA. His name is Jamey Chadwell and he was born and raised in Caryville , Tn. Played at ETSU.

Right on dennisvol,

The offense was a liability when we needed ball-control with the lead, or in short-yardage. Right again that Cutcliffe's passing philosophy did not use the entire field. Defenses didn't worry about the middle and sure didn't have to worry about a power running game. Put 30 pounds on Foster and make him a fullback and let Hardesty and Creer run behind him in the tailback position. Use the tight ends over the middle and let Taylor and company loose down the field.

As long as this guy can maintain Cutcliffe's level of discipline he is absolutely a good hire from this end. Of course, you never know but with Cut's discipline and his overhaul of the playbook and tendencies towards more aggressive plays down the field, things have to get better. Someone said we have been using the same playbook since 1987! If that's true, the rest of the SEC just got a big headache. Go Vols!!!

Instead of a tight ends coach, a real special teams coordinator might be worth the dollars. Tight Ends and Fullbacks are the same guys, or if we still had a fullback, they might be, but if UT kicking & punting were even as good as this year's offense and defense....

Everything seems to in the POSITIVE right now. We'll restock at QB. Mallett may even still come. He said he wants a pro-style offense. Tennessee and Michigan are two of the winningest programs of all time and similar in coaching philosophy. The introduction may have been all we need.

Posted by volunteer_cowboy on January 11, 2008 at 2:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

hey all, this is what chattanooga news is saying: What better time to make some drastic changes in your offensive scheme than when you have to replace your entire offensive staff. That's what Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer is faced with after David Cutcliffe left to become the head coach at Duke, and took two Vols assistant coaches with him as part of his staff. And with Trooper Taylor gone for Oklahoma State, Fulmer is left with some big shoes to fill. Usually when a head coach has to fill that many openings on one side of the football, those coaches have been fired and the change was needed. That is certainly not the case at Tennessee, where the Vols just wrapped up a 10-4 season as SEC East Champions. But with just about every other team adopting some sort of the "spread" offense, this gives Fulmer a chance to make some of those same changes for 2008. According to some reports from Knoxville, Fulmer has already made up his mind as to who will be the new offensive coordinator. He is just not telling anybody. And this brings me to this thought : What if Tennessee had abandoned the single-wing offense a year before they actually did? Then Steve Spurrier who grew up a huge Tennessee fan in Johnson City would have very likely been a Volunteer instead of a Gator. Get Ready. Change is coming to Big Orange Country.

Now, Phil, recruit us a 5* Meachum type who can snatch the pig from the air. Lord, you keep Hardesty healthy, if you would. And also, steer in a few decent d-linemen so Fla can never again have 59. Never. Late push coming. Poole looks good.

Rabid-
You're right. I didn't mean to put a dark cloud on it I was just personally in favor of QB and OC as different positions. For a first time OC in the SEC, I thought it would be a better idea to split up the responsibilites, plus, Loeffler is a proven recruiter and great QB coach(I live and grew up in the Detroit area and all my friends go to UofM) so I hear a lot of about the coaches and everthing. Also, to bring in a 5-star caliber QB with big time experience in the college ranks is a rare opportunity. That being said, I'm as excited as anyone for the hire.

Posted by bigbluevol on January 11, 2008 at 3:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

That is from a blog by Randy Smith, but it's not correct. Clawson runs a pro style offense out of multiple formations including the I, four wide sets, etc. We're not getting an overhaul, but we will have some different looks and play calls. If we were running the spread, I don't think Drayton would have left UF since he said he wanted to actually be able to coach running backs.

Posted by FWBVol on January 11, 2008 at 3:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Until NFL teams start running some variation of the spread, most QBs that are serious about playing at the highest level, if they are smart, will want to play for a school that runs some sort of pro-style offense.

That's not to say you can't spread four or five receivers wide in certain situations.

It seems there is a fad offense every few years. Some of those offenses, such as the wishbone, have notable success for a fairly long time, but eventually it all goes back to balance.

It sounds as if Clawson understands the importance of having a balanced attack and that should play to the strengths of the players UT has on the roster.

are there any videos of the Spiders offense on the internet?

Posted by kdt0725 on January 11, 2008 at 3:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Bigblue-

Not every spread offense is an option type or exclusive throwing type. For instance look at Illinois and Oregon. Both had 1500 yard backs. Oregon's offense especially is a good example. I think that could produce a high grade QB in the draft. Dixon would have won the heisman if he hadn't gotten hurt.

Posted by bigOmuscle on January 11, 2008 at 3:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Randy Smith is incorrect about Richmond's offense. He ran the spread at Fordham. He ran the ball down peoples throats at Richmond. Pro style all the way. His blocking schemes were a bit different than what UT ran last year. (Go to Utube and search Richmond Spiders) UT's running attack next year is gonna be incredible. Remember Riggs and Houston? I think he's gonna turn some heads w/ the recruits coming to visit tomorrow. I'm staying tuned, we might snag a 5 star or two.

I guess that I am the only one seeing a possible bigger picture here. I believe that one of the reasons that Fulmer took so long with this hire, was he was looking for more than just a new OC, but he replacement. Fulmer stated a few years back that he only wanted to coach 5-6 more years and then retire. It would not surprise me in a couple of years if the program is successful and we win a couple of SEC or an NC to see Fulmer step aside and hand the program off to this guy. That might be why the price tag is so high on this guy. This could be our next head coach if everything goes well.

I know that Clawson will run the spread, but he will not overhaul the whole playbook to run just the spread. He will be multiple (which UT is now), but will add more wrinkles and new looks that people will not be accustomed to seeing. I fully expect to see some more G-Gun and the like, but we will not be in that all the time. We will see pretty much everything, save the wishbone from this guy.

Hello UT fans! I'm a Fordham Alum (and also a UT football fan) who attended Fordham while clawson was the HC there, and here's what I know about the guy...

He has (or had back in 02) strong recruting pipelines in Florida and Texas...through these connections he was able to bring in exceptional, BE caliber talent to a league and a school that DOES NOT OFFER FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIPS (only financial aid). The Qb, Top WR, and RB he recruited and played hold almost every school record at their respective positions...recruiting is this man's forte.

He also is a skilled coach who gets his players to perform. He is a tough, disciplined SOB, but the players who bought into his tough (for PL kids anyway) training regiment and offensive scheme are a) going to be good, and b.) ready to run through walls for him. The man is still revered and loved at Fordham.

If anyone would like more details on Coach Clawson from his Fordham days please visit http://xsorbit31.com/users5/rams/inde... and get the story from guys with more football knowledge then I have. Go Clawson and Go Vols!

The original name of the Pro Syle Offense was the Multiple, as in multiple sets. The Spread offense is a spread set. The Pro-Style offense can easily incorporate the spread set as well as any other set.

Many Spread set offenses run WR reverses or shift a WR to RB, which you can do with just about any set. Some Spread set offenses, such as FL, run the option out of that set and run zone-read QB draws out of that set. Again, nothing much new there and can be easily incorporated into a Pro-Style (Multiple) set offense.

The issue for me is how many times are you going to let your QB get hit hard by SEC defenders? It is difficult for a RB to run the ball over 20 times in game and just run.

As we saw with FL and Oregon, running those ypes of QB run plays eventually gets hurt. Urban Meyer's answer to that is to go to a 2 QB system. When has that ever worked. Besides, you are still running the same number of QB run plays, so one of them will get hurt. So now you need 3 Tim Tebows to support that system.

It seems as though Fulmer will add the Spread set to his other sets oin his Pro-Style offense and make it even more multiple. He will also make good use of players like Gerald Jones to run reverses and run-pass options and so forth out of shifts.

If we have a mobile QB, the QB occasionally will run an option or a QB draw or be greenlighted to run downfield if the receivers are covered (but slide into the tackle) - just like Tee martin did.

It isn't that big of a change from what we have been doing. But Fulmer will NOT sell out to letting QBs and WR do the bulk of the running.

Urban Meyer could not recruit Peyton Manning or Darrel McFadden to his system.

Think of that.

Hamilton, let's get off to a good start by beating Alabama in the spring game.

Go Vols and welcome aboard. I'm betting we get a top 10 recruiting class in the end.

I heard Chavis has offers from 2 NFL teams but have heard no sources or anything.
I also heard of a "Major announcement concerning the program" in the next couple of days. I have also been around long enough to know not to take it too seriously.
Has anyone heard anything about this? Could they be waiting until after the weekend if there was news?

deesAvaul can't help hisself....can't be happy about anything apparently......what would make hymn happy other than coach Fulmer being gone? Oh well, I can be happy with the changes and actually give the new staff time to work and reveal their abilities before pre-judging(doom & gloom) what they actually bring to the field. Go VOLS and welcome new staff!!!

chavis has been offered the nfl before... it really depends on what position.. i don't think he would go if he thinks its a demotion of sort.. he is the king under phil but maybe he knows the talent is not their so he better make a change..... man that would be a big year change 80% of coaching staff without changing HC.... the year maybe looking up... is anyone calling slade....please call this guy someone.....

everyone is talking about the spread etc... who cares what type of offense we run as long as we win a championship again and not the east div BS.. I want to finally beat someone in the championship game.. 10 years is to long vol nation.. johnny majors got ran of town for less....

DSaVol probably has his own food taster to make sure he's not eating anything with poison.

I love having Tennessee guys as coaches, who played, or were grad assistants for us. But sometimes new blood and fresh ideas are needed to keep a competitive edge.

There still hasn't been any confirmation that Clawson is bringing his WR coach with him. So as far as I'm concerned, until that announcement is made, we still have two openings; WR and TE. One or both of those guys might have UT ties, which may or may not be a good thing.

I like hiring young coaches who are like hungry young lions trying to make their mark at the highest level of college football; THE SEC. I believe they'll work like heck to get the job done and might even have time to enjoy an occasional Krispy Kreme.

GO VOLS!!!

My impression of our program before PF is upper middle-class SEC.
Thanks Phil for raising expectations.
I like the direction of the program in the past two years, going outside the program was huge for PF.
Good luck boys.

He hasn't even got here yet and people are talking next HC. Great hire in my view but the guy's not even off the plane yet for god's sake.
