Cutcliffe hires Hobby as defensive coordinator

DURHAM, N.C. — Former University of Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe completed his first staff at Duke on Friday when he hired New Orleans Saints assistant Marion Hobby as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.

Hobby played for the Vols from 1986-89.

“The first thing to know about Marion is that he is a winner,” Cutcliffe said. “He has a great understanding of the game and is an exceptional leader of young men.”

Hobby was on Sean Payton’s staff in New Orleans for the past two seasons, joining the Saints after a season at Clemson and six seasons with Cutcliffe at Mississippi.

Hobby becomes the sixth member of the Duke staff to have worked with Cutcliffe at Ole Miss, including former UT assistants Kurt Roper and Matt Luke.

Sounds like Cut means business.

Great to hear. I always liked Hobb and (Wolf) T.H. yes the late 80s, it was a good time in G-burg. I wish him the best.

GO VOLS!!!

Coach cut is awesome---but he is not a vol now---lets talk Tennessee!!!

That must be how the KNS got scooped by so many on the Clawson hire, they were still following Cutcliff around to see who will be coaching at Duke. Does anyone really care? I like Coach Cut and wish him well, but I am sure I could find this information on some Duke web site if it mattered to me.

I agree and i love coach cut also but im a Tennessee man down the line---no matter what.

Other than the fact that Hobby is a respected Vol, who cares? Cut is gone, we have a new man. Lets get behind Clawson, Drayton et al and recruit some new players and coach them all up.

Ditto, utwick...Cut AND Hoby both deserve respect and good wishes for success. But at this point, why are we posting news about Duke on the GoVolsXtra site?

Wish Cut all the best. Does anyone know what duties Hobby actually had with the Saints? Rarely watch them being a Colts fan.

Fred White. He was one of my favorite players. He wasn't the most talented guy on the field, but he worked hard, was always around the ball and would lay a hit when he had the chance.

It's news worth posting boys. Two Vols family members coming together over the hill in Durham.

Who knows, Hobby may come home one day.

I think it's a good hire for Cutcliffe to get Hobby, but it looks like he wants more inbreeding on his staff than have ever been the case with Fulmer.

I understand David wanting people he knows and trust on his staff, but I believe every member of this staff has either worked or played for him previously.

Still, congrats to Marion, the Ironman from Irondale.

Some of us are actually able to read about Vols news AND keep up with Coach Cut. Can also walk and chew gum at the same time! And if you really don't want to know about it, then DON'T READ THE ARTICLE.

This isn't rocket science, guys.

Very interesting. Now be sure and keep us posted as to who is being interviewed for head coach and wide receivers coach at Richmond. What about the running back coaching position at Florida? While you're at it, have there been any changes at Cental Michigan? As BigOrangeFan stated, you got scooped by every paper in the country on the hiring of Clawson while you were chasing stories about Duke.

The guy's been gone 11 days and you don't want to hear how he's doing? KNS, pls continue to inform us on Cut and his Dukee pals, some of us want to know.

Cut was good for Tennessee. I wish him the best. He is not at Tennessee any more. I don't give a damn who he hires.

Who cares? (except the 12 Duke football fans).

I'm sorry but I'm with the majority. Spurrier is from the state of Tennessee, but you don't hear about every time he sneezes on here. I like Cut too, but he's gone. Lets stick to what's going on in Knoxville. Those of you who do want to know about everything Cutcliff, I'm sure Duke's website has it all.

At least they posted this off the AP wire, not KNS originated. Cut will slowly fade to black and be gone until fall. I'll look at Dook scores then. What a no-pressure job!

Congratulations to Marion Hobby.
