In the world of message boards and talk radio, the plea to Phillip Fulmer was clear:
Go outside the family to hire Tennessee's next offensive coordinator.
Not that Fulmer was listening to either forum, but he ended up giving them want they wanted.
Prior to this week, Dave Clawson and Fulmer had interacted only once. In a brief phone conversation four years ago, Clawson inquired about a graduate assistant from UT who was under consideration for Clawson's first staff at Richmond. That's it.
That qualifies as outside the family.
Tennessee's past three offensive coordinators were all in-house guys: David Cutcliffe, Randy Sanders, Fulmer himself. That takes it back to 1989.
Cutcliffe certainly brought some fresh ideas with him when he returned for his second stint in 2005 after a seven-year hiatus. And it's not that UT's offense hasn't been productive.
But spring practice will definitely be a watershed moment for the Vols. Cutcliffe and three of his offensive assistants are gone and so is quarterback Erik Ainge, a four-year starter.
Clawson will bring fresher ideas. There's not a whiff of Tennessee in his coaching pedigree that traces to Richmond, Fordham, Villanova and Lehigh, nor to his having played defensive back at little Williams College in Massachusetts, nor his having grown up on the shores of Lake Ontario near Buffalo, N.Y.
If there's any hesitation to UT fans unconditionally embracing Fulmer's hire - and there appears to be little - it's that Clawson's pedigree does trace to Richmond, Fordham, Villanova and Lehigh.
Come Sept. 20, he doesn't have to make first downs against Holy Cross. It's Florida. A week later, it's Auburn, not Bucknell.
It would, however, be a mistake to sell Clawson short because of his small-school background.Vince Lombardi once coached at Fordham. He turned out all right.
Want a Tennessee frame of reference? Ray Mears was hardly overwhelmed when he came from Wittenburg. From all appearances, Bruce Pearl handled the move from Wisconsin-Milwaukee fairly well.
Good coaches can coach, no matter the level of talent, paychecks or size of the stadium. That's the battle cry of those who would have Fulmer also hire Maryville High School's George Quarles (an idea I endorse). The same logic applies to Clawson.
"His philosophy has worked really well at our level and I have no doubt it will work really well at the SEC level,'' said Will Healy.
Healy is a junior quarterback at Richmond. A Chattanoogan, he talked about his new ex-coach on The Sports Page radio show Friday.
Healy described a coach who runs a multi-faceted offense, who studied the work of NFL coaches Mike Holmgren and Jon Gruden, who sets demanding standards for his quarterbacks on and off the field.
"He does a great job scheming people,'' Healy said. "He knows every weakness of a defense.
"It was only a matter of time before somebody snagged him from Richmond.''
Tennessee snagged him. Clawson was willing to give up head-coaching status to become an offensive coordinator in the toughest conference in America.
He had turned around two programs as a head coach, Fordham and Richmond. Ironically, he got his break as a head coach in 1998 when Fordham needed to replace a coach who left to become offensive coordinator at Iowa.
Clawson said Friday in his exit from Richmond that on a personal level, he would have been happy to stay another 20 years. But the professional impulse pushed him to Tennessee.
"Coaches are driven and I'm no different,'' he said. "And the challenge of coaching at Tennessee and the SEC is a great challenge.
"It was too good of an opportunity to pass up.''
And Fulmer, when he evaluated this guy who has done good work at Lehigh, Villanova, Fordham and Richmond, this guy with no family ties to Tennessee, must have felt the same way.
Time will tell if Clawson is a good hire or maybe even a great one. What we know from the get-go is he's a fresh start.

Doesnt matter anyway. ESPN has already crowned Georgia world champs in 2008...cause we all know that past performance is always a predictor of future success. Just think if GA wins the red-black game.......they will burn down athens....thankfully.

This could be a defining moment in UT history. I hope we were careful enough what we wished for. I like the new blood, fresh ideas approach but we must not lose our identity. The only way this outsider can pay his dues and become one of US is to win it all. He must have a National Championship to secure his place on the wall. If he helps to accomplish that, then the sky is the limit for many years to come. Welcome aboard Claw! Welcome to the the Vols!

If this guy does well, he will either become the heir apparent to Fulmer, or we will be saying goodbye to him in 2-3 years.
I'd love to see him succeed, Fulmer finish his career with another SEC title or even NC, and then retire gracefully for this guy to take over. But there's a lot that can happen other than that.
Posted by RocketVol on January 12, 2008 at 7:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Now Phil, leave him alone and let him do his job. When you disagree with a call being made on the field, let it go - he is the expert now. Try taking off your headset and stop micromanaging each game. Let the coordinators do that. Your job is to look at the game as a whole and steer your coaches to make halftime adjustments. Paterno's system works pretty good.

Been in and out of country last 2 weeks. Can anyone fill me in as to 1) was the UF running back coach unhappy, or did we just offer money?(seems like a lateral move at best) 2. I have heard several references to a "huge surprise" to come out of the coaching searches, what is this about? It does look that Clawsen should be a great addition to our staff. Spring game should be VERY interesting!!! Go Vols

All of these crystal balls have come out here and seen the future of Tenn Football. WOW....
This poor guy hasn't even met the players yet and some are saying he must win a National Championship.
All through our history we have only won 2/two.
There is only one National Champion each year and the task of winning is much harder than we realize. Unless you are Southen Cal, Ohio State or Oklahoma and can get the media to vote you number 1 in preaseason you will be hard pressed to ever win one playing in the SEC.
I just want to enjoy College Football with all of its ups and downs and all of its hype. Sure, I'd love to win National Championships but realistically it happens only rarely at best.
Let's wait and see how things go for a couple or three years and then make our judgements. Fulmer will be here until he is not here any longer. The same goes for Clawson and every other coach. As fans we will be here also.
At this point if you can say that you don't like the new OC... YOU ARE AN IDIOT.

why36knot 8:18 AM - Agree- NC's are a gift from a result of a great team making and catching many breaks.
Top 10's are a result of strong recruiting, great coaching and being prepared for every Saturday. You can't take a game off emotionally or you'll get your hat handed to you as you go out the door. This past season showed us that.
I like this hire and we need to back this man. Hard as it is I'm trying to get over the bumps (being kind) of 2007 and have a little fun in 2008. Go Vols.

pdhuff is right in that we need to support our new (and present) coaches. Too often, TN fans remind me of a 10 year old I took to a ball game five years ago who yelled "We're with you all the way...until you lose and then you're on your own."
True Stroy! I told him he'd fit in perfectly.
Posted by TommyJack on January 12, 2008 at 9:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)
PD: I back the new guy 100%. NC's are rare. All I ask is for TN to be in POSITION to win one. If we are, the SEC's will come. Got a new triple option pkg...apple, cherry & raspberry fritters.
Pound'em!
Why36knot? Why all the anger?
Posted by jamcdaniel79 on January 12, 2008 at 9:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I like that he is from the outside....don't love the lack of big time experience.
That being said, Jim Tressel seems to be an above average coach (outstanding if the SEC didn't exist). He came from I-AA.
I am supportive. Why the heck not?
Let's get some recruiting done. Our D will be good next year....we always replace LBs pretty well and I think having Karl off the field just about offsets not having Mayo on it. That guy was just outclassed in every SEC game.
Let's see what the new guy can do with the O. We do not have a lack of talent versus anyone else in our conference....no excuses.
BTW - whoever complained about the guy not meeting the team yet but being expected to win a national title.....that's BS, he knew what he was getting into.
Big goals and expectations is what keeps us where we need to be or at least headed in the direction to get back where we need to be.

Hopefully he'll be smart enough to anticipate defensive calls and will not have to rely on the QB to checkoff every single freaking play like Sanders and Cut did. If no more shotgun dink and dunk I may be able to watch again without throwing beers at the TV.

The excitement of the unknown is overwhelming. This looks like a good hire on paper for sure. I've always respected Fulmer for hiring great asst. coaches and letting them do their job. I think it will be difficult for Fulmer to give this new guy the reigns of the offense and let him do it his way completely. If we see Fulmer let Clawson take the reigns, then I think Fulmer definitely hired this guy as a possible replacement when he is ready to step down. Go Vols! I wonder how many calls Richmond U. has gotten from SEC def. coor. asking for game tape of the 2007season. lololo

fencevol - Coach Drayton, the running backs coach at UF, was very professional about his decision to move and with the comments he made about it. Meyer, on the other hand, didn't handle it as well, expressing anger at one of his coaches going over to the enemy. It seems as though Drayton, as a running backs coach, wanted to go to an organization where running backs were actually used in the offensive scheme.
As far as the "big surprise" goes, we're still scratching our heads on that one. We don't know if that was referring to Clawson or not. I think we have one more coaching position to fill, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.....
Posted by tngeoff on January 12, 2008 at 9:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I really like this guy the more I research him. I also like Coach Drayton. I just hope that Fulmer and Clawson aren't going to bifurcate. If Clawson and Drayton click and the final hire (whoever it will be - obviously no "BIG ANNOUNCEMENT") does too, this could be a very defining moment in Tennessee football history. Was I annoyed in 2007? Without a doubt early on. Am I excited about 2008? Incredibly. Do I need to hear anymore folks pontificating about their "right" to say who can and who cannot be excited by these developments based on their "100% support of whatever?" No. The folks who are and have been realisttic and not just contrary for the sake of being contrary, to the man (no bender bias implied intentionally or unintentionally - just an expression) shown support for this new development.

i'm all for outside the family.... a little surprised its from richmond but fulmer is the leader and he must rise or fall with this decision....
we needed these coaches because the off staff was stale and predictable. we need some changes on defense to bring in some fresh attitudes also... everyone has to admit in the 2000's tn has been very inconsistant on both sides of the ball and the teams have quit when they face the best teams.... that's not what we're used to and i think that's why everyone is excited about outside the family hires...
recruit baby recruit......... we need some studs on D and a couple of stud receivers to stretch the field.

The press conference is likely at 10:00 eastern, which means now, as we speak.
The first thing that needs to happen is for Clawson, Drayton, and Chavis to meet and have a session on how to stop a spread offense. The new guys have worked in that type of system and could be a very valuable source of information for us on how to defend it.

Richmond is a small, expensive, academically-selective school, a la Vandy/Duke/Ivies, yet Clawson was able to get significant contributions from walk-ons on a division-championship-contending team. In fact, all of the schools he attended or coached at are of that type. I think he will emphasize class attendance and academic success to a degree this year's squad could have used. This should be a tremendous contribution in addition to his pure football credentials. Put me with the "excited" group!

Ole Coach Phil isn't as dumb as people would have you think. Forget footballl, this was about politics. Phil certainly knows football but the program has had some rough years by recent UT standards, which of course, he helped to set. He had to hire outside to shake things up. Given that, I think this guy has real potential and I can't wait til next year. Same discipline, new playbook, bigger balls during the game. Right, wrong, or indifferent, it looks like we're in for some excitement - as so is the rest of the SEC! Go Vols!!!

I am not saying that he has to win a NC to be liked as a coach. I'm saying in order to take his place among the greats in program history, and be accepted as a future Head Coach, he will need to win a National Championship.

And, dfreeman, to ol Phils credit, he had the good sense to hire somebody who has the sand to stick to what he believes, even in the job interview with a potential future boss. I was ready for CPF to go. He and his staff had gotten lazy. He has made a solid hire in both the OC and the RB coach. I would guess this receivers coach must be good if Clawson is bringing him in.
CPF has done the right thing and now we should all support the team and coaches. CPF now must win and bring us back to the days we all know and love. He can do it if he tries. That is the key. Trying. Anyone questioning his ability to do it does not understand the process. He can coach, recruit, lead, and win. He just has to want to.

Fulmer knew he needed new blood in a program that has fell behind LSU, Florida, Auburn and Georgia. All of those schools stepped outside of tradition to hire what they thought was the best man for the job. Now it is our turn.
Interesting that the other schools went to first division not the second division for their man. But, I agree...it was a mater of time before this Spider would have moved into the big division.
One question remains, how does this help our defense. It was the absolute worst defense in over 15 years. Looks like Fulmer isn't making moves here! What about the "un-special" Teams?
