UT opens track season on two fronts

Tennessee's track teams hit the road today for some early indoor-season competition.

The No. 3-ranked Lady Vols open the indoor campaign at the Kentucky Invitation in Lexington today and Saturday. The men are at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.

"We have some talented freshmen who have never run indoors and we have some seniors who are anxious to finish with a big year,'' said Lady Vols coach J.J. Clark.

Seven indoor All-Americans return from the team that finished third in the NCAA championships last season. A strong sprint corps led by Courtney Champion, Cleo Tyson, Lynne Layne, LaTonya Loche and Celreice Law is buoyed by freshmen Brittany Jones and Jeneba Tarmoh.

Sarah Bowman paces the distance crew and Shanna Dickenson is the top returning thrower.

Several of the UT men got in some early competition at the Clemson Opener on Dec. 1, but a number of Vols make their season debut today at Virginia Tech. They include indoor All-Americans Jangy Addy and Evander Wells.

"We go to Virginia Tech two or three times a year,'' said coach Bill Webb. "It's a great place to compete.''

Men's Golf: Wilmington, England, native Daniel Casey will join the Vols when they begin play at the end of January. Coach Jim Kelson offered a scholarship to Casey in July of 2007, once it was determined that Jonathan Mount could no longer physically compete for the Vols.

"We are delighted that Daniel Casey has decided to join our squad for the 2008 season," Kelson said.

"I really feel that Daniel can step in and contribute to this year's team. He is very long and possesses a superb short game. I also feel that he is an excellent putter. Additionally, Daniel is a very intelligent and hard-working young man. In short, I feel he is a terrific fit for us."

Casey comes from an experienced golf family. His father, Dr. David Casey, competed for his native country of Ireland several times during his amateur career.

"I am really looking forward to being a part of the team," Casey said. "It is a great opportunity for me to improve my game with the help of some great coaches."

A graduate of Bishop Chancellor School, some of Casey's highlights include runner-up at the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship and finishing runner-up at the 2007 Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters..
