University of Tennessee announced Saturday that Latrell Scott will join TennesseeÕs staff as wide receivers coach. Scott, the assistant head coach at the University of Richmond under Dave Clawson, now joins his former boss who has become UT's new offensive coordinator.

As expected, Richmond wide receivers coach Latrell Scott will join Tennessee’s staff as wide receivers coach.

Scott has spent the last three seasons with Richmond and was promoted to assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator prior to the 2007 season.

“In the interview process, he was very energetic, knowledgeable and appears to be an excellent teacher,” UT coach Phillip Fulmer said Saturday. “He has an outstanding reputation as a recruiter.”

Scott, 31, interviewed with Fulmer on Friday, the same day Tennessee officially announced it had hired Richmond coach Dave Clawson as its offensive coordinator.

On Saturday, Scott joined his former head coach at a press conference in the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center to announce their arrival.

“I fully trust Dave, and I’m very, very excited about the fact that we’ll be able to make this offense go,” Scott said.

Scott was an All-American tight end at Hampton and coached receivers for three seasons at VMI before joining Richmond’s staff in 2005.

He said he had an opportunity to leave Richmond for jobs at two other BCS conference schools, but wanted to make sure he moved to a good situation and did that with Clawson, if possible.

“Latrell’s an excellent coach,” Clawson said. “He progressed in our staff. He was the very, very best recruiter I had on my staff at Richmond. He had turned down other opportunities to make a move like this, in hopes of making this move together. We’re very fortunate that it worked like this.”

Scott replaces Trooper Taylor as receivers coach. Taylor was named co-offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State after four seasons at UT.

“The bottom line is Trooper did a great job with these guys,” Scott said. “But I’m going to be Latrell Scott. I’m going to coach the wide receivers the way that Latrell Scott coaches wide receivers. We’ll be fine. Like I said, Coach Taylor left me with a great group, left me with a very athletic group, a very well-coached group. But I have the opportunity to put my stamp on these guys and see what I can do.”

Scott’s plan for the wideouts sounds a lot like Taylor’s. He wants his players to make plays and make their presence felt in the run game.

“What we want to do is we want create a physical presence in the wide receiver position,” Scott said. “We know these guys are athletic. We’ve got big, strong tailbacks that we want to be able to break long runs, and that’s going to happen because these wide receivers are physical in the run game. We also want guys that can make plays down the field. We want guys that can that can take a hitch on a 5-yard throw and go 80 yards for a touchdown. We’re really excited about the opportunity that we have here.”

And, after meeting with Fulmer on Friday, excited about the players.

Scott got his first look at UT’s receivers on Friday, including 1,000-yard receiver Lucas Taylor and some of the younger players like Gerald Jones.

Scott said that made his decision to join UT’s staff that much easier.

“I got here yesterday and I had an opportunity to watch those guys on video,” Scott said. “It’s the best decision I ever made in my life, next to marrying my wife.”

Welcome to Big Orange Country Coach Scott. Keep our reputation of being Wide Receiver University going in the right direction. Best of luck to you and the Vols. Go get us some recruits! GO VOLS!!!

Only 1 to go.Clawson wouldn't bring someone he didn't think could get it done.Welcome to BIG ORANGE COUNTRY coach Scott.

FWBVol writes:

I just listened to the announcement press conference on utsports.com and I really like what Scott had to say about coaching receivers. He wants athletic guys that can run past d-backs, but who are also strong enough to take a five-yard hitch, break a tackle and go 80 yeards for the score. He said he will coach them to be tough and physical because those are the things that win football games.

Great Hire!!!

Listening to the Clawson, Scott announcement, I'm impressed with them both. Scott was assistant head coach at Richmond, and Clawson credited him as being the best recruiter there. I think they'll both add a lot of new energy to the team. GoVOLS!

All the right things were said, now hit the road and get some recuits!

utwick writes:

I'm excited by all the hires so far. I guess we still need a tight ends coach. Clawson, Drayton and Scott bring the needed energy and youth with Clawson the oldest at 40. Welcome to not only Big Orange Country but to the Big Orange Family. Much success to you all.

thesavageorange writes:

Just listened to the announcement myself. You can hear the conviction in Clawson's voice. Both these guys exude confidence. There are I think 12 recruits on campus today.(according to Doug Mathews)Perfect timing.Hopefully we get some news that we got some commits.I also like Scott's comments on his style of coaching. The WR's will be physical or they will sit on the bench.Man I'm excited.

Quarles would be the cherry on top IMO.

what happened to the big suprise announcment ? or was that just a rumor or something ?
If these coaches works out for us and we win then I will be more than glad to eat crow.
Good luck to Clawson and Scott.

Has TouchdownTN weighed in on on any of these developments? Or Jamali? Or...well, whoever? Just wondering what the view is like from that end of the field.

It's truly an exciting time in Tennessee, thanks guys.

CoverOrange writes:

Can Drayton or Scott coach special teams? If not, that is where the next hire needs to be. IMHO.

Quarles from Maryville would make a great tight ends coach.. he and Phil could even ride to work together and eat at Shoneys on the Alcoa highway..

Quarles would be a great asset. Get him!

From what I understand, the big surprise was hiring of clawsen.
anyone else know of any big news? I was hoping it was a possible recruit committing to UT but....

CoastGuardVol writes:

Anyone know about Ryan Mallett

vol94 writes:

Hear Mallett is going to arkansas

CoastGuardVol writes:

Vol94, thanks for the update. I figured it wasnt in the cards for us with not getting the Michigan bunch. One more question, how about Arian Foster?

I wish you Maryville sheep would get off the "Quarles"thing. He is a HIGH SCHOOL coach. This is big time D-1 COLLEGE. LOL. No doubt he is a great HIGH SCHOOL coach, and with some COLLEGE experience, maybe someday.

Welcome Bro Scott. Like what you see at WR, Huh. Go recruit some more of it, see if there's another Meachum, Gault or Kent out there.

KnoxVol_in_TX writes:

Might not be a bad consideration to add Quales to the High School Relations position...just a thought.

But regarding Scott and Clawson, as tngeoff said, this will be very, very exciting!

gaVOLman writes:

I gotta say I'm really excited to see how spring practice plays out and the ORANGE/WHITE game. I just hope that the players resond well to the new chagnes and hopefully that'll make UT OFFENSE more dynamic and less predictable than in th past.

utmdm writes:

Smart guy. Nice save throwing in the wife thing. These 2 have me pumped. Even if we don't recuit much more this year, we have good players returning and a great recuiting class from last year. If nothing else at least I feel we have laid the foundation for next year and beyond. IT'S GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL!

utwick writes:

Two well-spoken and intelligent men who I think will put their stamp on this team. Go Vols!

utmdm writes:

Kwitcher, Obviously they had issues professionally and maybe otherwise. Not too sure about a source that was kicked off the team and a druggie.

invisiblekid writes:

A long run on the ground seldom occurs without downfield blocking by the wide receivers. We saw improvement in that under Taylor and I hope it continues to improve under Scott. Look forward to seeing what Scott can do in recruiting the next few weeks. Exciting time to be a Vol, can't wait til the O&W game.

vol94 writes:

coastguardvol, sorry had to leave and go buy my 4 yr old son a basketball goal..

anyway, no news on foster. I ran into a client of mine the other day who is good friends with coach chavis.. according to him foster was about 80% nfl.
however, he met with new rb coach, drayton.

My personal opinion is that foster may be concerned that he may not get as many carries in 08. i could be wrong but just my opinion.

thanks coastguard vol for serving our country!!

The last "L. Scott" we had dealing with receivers at UT was the fastest man in America running in a straight line. Couldn't catch a cold, though....... I think Latrell will be great for us.

Any news on the "big surprise" from Fulmer? I am very pleased, but in no way surprised with these hires.

vtvol#210290 writes:

If Latrell Scott wants the UT receivers to become more physical then I say let's do it. If he can teach these young guys on how to break press coverage and what to do against bump and run coverage he will truly be an upgrade over Trooper Taylor. Imagine what UT could have done if Taylor had coached Robert Meachem these techniques in 2006. Maybe the LSU and Arkansas games would've turned out differently. Hopefully downfield blocking in the secondary will improve as well. It's an exciting time to be a Tennessee Vol!

budd#207344 writes:

Gee a guy who can coach and will expect physical results from a football player. What a concept

volunteer_cowboy writes:

this is what the alabama newspaper is saying: How much might Tennessee drop without offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe? The last time he left Knoxville, the Volunteers failed to win
ten games three of the next four seasons and bottomed out at 5-6 in 2005.

elsinoresam writes:

The real question is...... is Coach Scott going to be doing the chest bumps on the sidelines?

Ditchdigger writes:

I don't want to see any more chest bumps I think we will all see some serious disciplined intense downfield football from the wide receivers and tight ends. I believe Scott when he says he will coach his way "a new way"

pdhuff#552644 writes:

TDTN- You remember Seviers catch against Auburn for a TD. Shug Jordan said the pass fluttered like a wounded quail. Came down with it amongst 3 Tigers. Time stands still in moments like that.

H##l, I even remember when our d-tackles crossed the line of scrimmage, do you?

TommyJack writes:

PD & TD: Seivers is legend. As for another pair of soft hands, Johnny Mills. Heck, he was even slower than Seivers, but man could he squeeze the hog bladder.

I hope our foes develop a bad case of ARACHNAPHOBIA with all these spiders on our sidelines. I hope they can recruit Va since we used to get some good kids from that state.

mbible1utk#324980 writes:

i heard that they did indeed have a big surprise, and it fell through. Supposedly they were thinking that Larry Slade might retire, and they were going to get Kevin Steele from Alabama to come in and coach our DB's and be assistant DC. That may be total phooey (I have a good source directly connected to Fulmer who botched some info earlier this week). Maybe he has someone crazy coming in to help us out at another position? I'd almost like to have a Mike DeBord come in and coach both Tight Ends and Special Teams. I think we're closer though to seeing what will be a Tight End/Fullback/H-Back coach.

volunteer_cowboy writes:

loeffler is not coming, mallet is going to arkansas as i understand it, debord is not even on radar, and still havent seen any BIG SURPRISE, and i remember you calling me a whore!! the one thing for sure is that you couldnt even work for KNS because your EXTREMELY credible source lied to you mbible

firefulmer (Inactive) writes:

Sounds like some good coaches have joined the staff. HOWEVER, there is a coach (that I greatly dislike) that is still in charge. Nothing will change with the offense.

FWBVol writes:

TouchdownTN, Larry Seivers never played with Bobby Scott. Scott was QB during the same era as your favorite punching bag.

Condredge Holloway was starting QB during Seivers' first two years and Randy Wallace was the QB his last two years.

firefulmer, I don't understand your hostility toward Phillip Fulmer, but he's more Volunteer than most of us will ever be. He's had one losing season in 16 as head coach.

I can't wait for CPF to proove you, and the others like you, wrong this fall.

anthony writes:

I betcha Fulmer's scratching his head and wondering what the h....just happened??? One group goes out one door and another group comes in by the other one. And our ole buddy, Phil, is just sitting there in the middle, minding his good ole business....

Timed_vol (Inactive) writes:

Larry Seivers, Condredge, and Stanley Morgan were all exceptional college players. I'll always remember Larry getting injured on a horrible throw by Wallace, the pass was a short slant (used to call'em 'lookin'), and the pass was high. Larry got smashed in his lower back....ughhhh!!!

Timed_vol (Inactive) writes:

Clawson faces big challenges. He gets a good pass-protection team, but one that is very weak in running the ball.

He also does not have a stud qb. I'm not sold on Crompton. Maybe he'll show better wirh more first-team reps.

My guess is UT's offense will be very much like this years, maybe with a bit more running, reverses, and screens. If Crompton is QG, he will throw deep, but he'll also get piced a ton more than Ainge.

CoastGuardVol writes:

Vol94 thanks again for another update. Its my pleasure to serve this great country. Have a great week, Go Vols!!
