Raleigh's brother named manager in Southern League

University of Tennessee baseball coach Todd Raleigh and his brother Matt could be seeing a lot more of each other this year.

Todd is in his first season at UT and Matt was named Friday the manager of the Carolina Mudcats, the Class AA affiliate of the Florida Marlins.

It will be Matt Raleigh’s third stint at Carolina. He was a player for the Mudcats in 1999 and a hitting instructor with Carolina in 2003.

“(The Marlins) kind of called me out of the blue,” Raleigh told The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin. “To be honest, it was a little bit of a surprise. My initial thought was, ‘No.’ I love the game but I also have a business here that’s booming.”

Raleigh, 37, runs the Raleigh Baseball Institute in Endwell, N.Y.

“To be a manager would be the only way I’d get back into the game,” he said. “I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to step in as a Double-A manager. Usually, guys have to go to ‘A’ ball for a year or two.”

The Mudcats will visit the Tennessee Smokies in Sevierville on May 26-30 and Aug. 1-5 for those Raleigh reunion opportunities.

Matt Raleigh had a sterling minor league record himself, once hitting 37 home runs in a season with the Class AA Binghamton (N.Y.) Mets. He played nine seasons in the minors and finished with 119 home runs.
