Razorbacks rescued by Ervin in OT, 71-67

Arkansas blows 12-point lead, but regroups to give Pelphrey 2-0 start in SEC

Arkansas's Charles Thomas calls for a time out before he is tied up by Alabama's Mykal Riley. The Razorbacks defeated the Tide, 71-67, in overtime.

Arkansas was 90 seconds from a discouraging home loss. After blowing a 12-point lead, the Razorbacks trailed by two in overtime.

Then Gary Ervin finally found his shooting touch.

Ervin scored seven points in the final 1:29 to lead Arkansas to a 71-67 victory over visiting Alabama on Sunday.

His 3-pointer from the right wing put the Razorbacks ahead to stay. Then he added an acrobatic 3-point play under the basket in the final minute.

"I missed a lot of open shots, but my teammates picked me up," Ervin said. "I got them when they counted, though."

Alabama never led in regulation, but the Crimson Tide forced overtime on Mykal Riley's 3-pointer. Riley then scored Alabama's first four points of the extra session, giving his team a 64-62 advantage.

Ervin's 3-pointer put the Razorbacks (13-3, 2-0 SEC) ahead. He then took a pass in transition, jumped to his left to draw contact and scored, fouling Riley out with 54.6 seconds remaining.

Ervin finished with 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting.

"We let them off the hook there at the end of regulation, but we stayed calm," Razorbacks swingman Sonny Weems said. "Give credit to Alabama, they played great and gave it a good shot. We were the better team all day."

Darian Townes had a big game inside for Arkansas, making his first seven shots and finishing with 18 points.

Alabama (11-6, 0-2) finally made a run late, thanks in part to a zone defense that kept the ball closer to the perimeter.

"It slowed us up a little bit," Arkansas coach John Pelphrey said. "I thought we might have settled for some 3s too much."

The Razorbacks shot 20-of-29 from the free throw line, and Alabama was 10-of-18.

Arkansas is 2-0 in SEC play for the first time since 2001-02, Nolan Richardson's last season.

Indiana 62, Illinois 58: Eric Gordon had 11 of his 17 points in the second half and the No. 10 Hoosiers rallied from a late deficit to beat the visiting Illini.

It was Indiana's 10th consecutive victory and 27th in a row at home.

D.J. White added 15 points and 10 boards, and Armon Bassett had all 11 of his points in the second half for the Hoosiers (14-1, 3-0).

Shaun Pruitt led Illinois (8-9, 0-4) with 14 points and Brian Randle added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Rhode Island 80, Duquesne 78: Will Daniels matched a season-high with 28 points and Jimmy Baron hit a fadeaway jump shot with three seconds left to give the No. 22 Rams (15-2, 1-1 Atlantic 10) a win over the visiting Dukes.

Reggie Jackson led Duquesne (11-4, 1-1) with 19 points.

Oregon 71, Stanford 66: Maarty Leunen scored 16 points, and the Ducks (12-4, 3-1 Pac-12) used an 8-0 run in the final two minutes to beat the No. 23 Cardinal (13-3, 2-2) in Eugene, Ore.

Brook Lopez tied a career high with 26 points for Stanford.

Duke 87, Virginia 65: DeMarcus Nelson scored 20 points to lead the No. 9 Blue Devils over the visiting Cavaliers.

Gerald Henderson added 18 points and Kyle Singler scored 13 for Duke (13-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Sean Singletary scored 18 points and Calvin Baker added 13 for Virginia (10-4, 0-1).
