ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Former Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett is still deciding where to resume his college football career.
"We haven't made a decision yet, but everybody and their dog is saying my son has done this or that," Jim Mallett said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press. "I can tell you, we visited Arkansas and we've talked to Texas A&M and Tennessee. But we're not sure what is going on at Tennessee because they hired an offensive coordinator that has run the spread. I can also tell you we considered UCLA, but just decided that's too far away."
Arkansas, on the other hand, is close to Texarkana, Texas, where Mallett played high school football. Arkansas compliance director Marvin Caston said the school has received permission from Michigan to talk to Mallett — but he stopped short of saying any transfer process was complete.
"That's where we are," Caston said. "I can't confirm whether or not he's enrolled."
Mallett's father said last week, shortly after it became clear his son was leaving Michigan, that it was a good possibility his son would transfer to Tennessee if the school hired former Michigan offensive coordinator Mike DeBord and quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler, both of whom were considered for jobs.
The Vols chose former Richmond coach Dave Clawson to run their offense. He used more of a spread scheme behind quarterback Stacy Tutt in 2004 and '05 before using more traditional schemes the past two seasons.
Mallett's stint at Michigan ended shortly after the school hired Rich Rodriguez last month to succeed retiring coach Lloyd Carr because the former West Virginia coach plans to have his spread offense led by a mobile quarterback.
The 6-foot-7, 252-pound Mallett has a strong arm and is best suited for a pro-style offense.
He played in 11 games last season as a freshman, filling in for Chad Henne when he was injured. Mallett was 61-of-141 for 892 yards with seven touchdown passes and five interceptions.
Mallett threw for more than 2,500 yards and 27 scores as a senior at Texarkana High School, where he was a three-year starter and earned Texas Class 4A offensive player of the year honors.
After sitting out next season, he will have three years of eligibility.

Fayetteville newspaper reported today that he has already moved into a dorm at Arkansas. I know Dad said they haven't decided, but I can't imagine a paper missing a lead THAT badly....

This is exciting! The father has talked to Tennessee! What about the Grandmother? Cousins?

They are concerned about Clawsons past use of a spread?? Apparently they missed what he said about playing to his strengths and that he hasn't stuck to just one style of play, he bases it off his stars.
But yea, that is weird with the reports of him and Arkansas, someone is wayyyy off.

We have 3 quarterbacks and more on the way?? How can we absorb another one? Go to Arkansas, take your chances there or somewhere you can grow, or come to Tennessee and become a Volunteer. It's still the logical choice. Line up with the heroes. Ask not what your university can do for you, but what you can do for your university!! John F. Fulmer Guardian of the Gate!!

Why does anyone still care where he ends up?We are loaded at the position.Would rather have a couple 6'1 Concession stand attendants.Thats where we need help.
Go Big Orange!!!

volindawgland...
amen. What an idiot, he wants to avoid a spread offense so he goes to Arkansas? Has helicopter dad read up on their new coach?
QBs aint what we need, anyway. I think that dad thought that he could push his way into TN by dangling the Two-coaches and my son deal. When TN didn't blink, he moved on. moron.

Sounds like Dad is trying to manage his retirement plan a little too closely. Back off Dad. There are only two schools with a worse campus than Arky. .....Sou. Car. and Miss State. how about letting your son figure it out?

Ok......he's going to Arkansas, can we please focus on serious recuits for UT? Last time we listened to a "highly taughted" QB, he scared off other potential prospecsts and went to Texas.........Sims?
Go get some new Vols!!

I heard that one time, Bobby Petrino used some SPREAD on his toast back in '06. Reliable sources indicate that he may still employ the SPREAD option on his toast today.
Posted by AlpharettaVol on January 15, 2008 at 9 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Hope he's not going to Arkansas because of Petrino. Since he has to sit out a year to be eligible, the chances are pretty high that Petrino won't even be there by the time he becomes eligible.

C'mon KNS!!!! To reinforce the comment of the first poster here, an Arkansas newspaper said YESTERDAY AFTERNOON that MAllett had begun taking classes at Arkansas. This kid is gone. He's not coming to UT. Over-n-out!

You can never have enough good QB's. I would trust his Dad before I trusted a newspaper in Arkansas. The kid is really good and we would be lucky to sign him. That said, I prefer QB's that are mobile enough that when the situation cals for it he can get us 2 yards on a scramble when he has to.
Posted by sjt18 on January 15, 2008 at 9:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)
UT has some good QB prospects but this kid was probably the best QB in the country last year. He made Clausen look like a chump in the Army AA game.
It won't be the end of the world if UT doesn't get him but it would be a very good thing if they did. For one, he's a great talent... but it would also be good to keep him from an SEC rival. I don't think Ark plays UT within the next 3-4 years in the regular season but with that kid playing QB in a Petrino system, UT could see them in the CG.

Ironcity, while you don't want this kid running the option, he isn't exactly immoble either.

this is just plain stupid... cnn reported he is attending classes at ark... move on KNS... this is the best recruiting news you have????? must have been a bad weekend if out of all the recruits that visited this past weekend all you have to talk about is this.... no commits after the weekend??? isn't that odd at this point of the game????
we need some DL and OL that are mean..........

Scout.com reported yesterday that Ryan Mallett is officially transferring from Michigan to Arkansas. While he was the #2 QB prospect behind Jimmy Clausen in the 2007 recruiting year, we aren't exactly hurting at the position. Just hope that one of our three guys can become a passer with a feel for the game, and not just a thrower. Wonder if he actually WOULD line up at TE or DE if that would get him on the field, if he couldn't beat out Crompton, Stephens, or Coleman? For those of us with short memories, Crompton was the #3 QB behind Mark Sanchez and Ryan Perrilloux in the 2005 recruiting year. Go Vols! SAVol
Posted by Ironcity on January 15, 2008 at 10:21 a.m. (Suggest removal)
The reason he didn't start at Michigan was because the QB in front of him was a four year starter who was one of the early Heisman hopefuls. I never saw him scramble and if he could, that would be a benefit. I still do not trust all these news outlets. I will trust his father.

After watching some video of this kid on Rivals.com he can run. It's easy to spot this kid on the field he looks like a giant compared to everyone else. If he doesn't come to TN he'll probably do just OK at Arkansas, and then do very well in the NFL. If he's worried about the spread that Clawson used at Richmond then maybe he should have listened to Clawson when they talked to TN.

I personally like our chances with a more mobile QB. I think Crompton will be the man @ UT for the next couple of years.

Arkansas already has the two Dick's from Texas at QB; Casey and his brother Nathan. Casey will be a Senior next season, Nathan redshirted this past year, they still have five other QB's on the roster and have two more coming in this years recruiting class (#12 & #17). So with Mallet they are going to have TEN QB's on their roster next season?
We were recruiting Jim Youngblood anyway so maybe we should jump back on him and Tyler Wilson! Anyone know if we are getting Jake Ryan from West, Brent Burnette from Maryville, Eric Lindsey from Catholic or Clark McMillan from Central?

How much you wanna bet I could throw a football over that mountain? If only coach would have put me in, we'd had won state. No doubt, no doubt in my mind...

Chris Scelfo would be good to recruit TX, LA and GA. Scuttlebutt in Baton Rouge is that Les Miles is looking to hire him too. UGA was talking about hiring him last year.
I don’t know what UGA is paying Rodney Garner but he coached TE’s here and at Auburn. Last year the N.O. Saints and Les Miles tried to lure him away. Richt and the Dawg faithful haven’t been real impressed with his D-Line coaching job as of late but his recruiting is keeping him in the fold for now. He knows he won’t unseat Willie Martinez as DC so where does he ascend on their staff? Maybe he would think that he could jump Brooks and get Chief’s job when he retires.

MemfrisVOL I was very impressed with how Arian stepped up his game in 07.He took really good care of the ball and had the bulk of the carries.Honestly though I think Josh McNeil is faster than him.

No one is as fast as Josh McNeil when he is chasing two co-ed's around his room!
That last sentence was intended for joking purposes, so there is no need for anyone to freak out. On a different note, KNS seems to be really struggling the past few days. For one, this story has been on every other news website for at least 24 hours, second some of the articles are sounding like regurgitated crap, and if I read one more article about how good LSU and Georgia are or how Tebow is Superman, I will vomit.
Looks like Gerald Williams is the #4 Juco Recruit. It would be nice to have a JUCO transfer like the Daniel Calvin kid (DT 6'4 310). We could surely beat out the colleges on his list.
Posted by invisiblekid on January 15, 2008 at 3:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Looks like "Chris Simms or Chris Leak Reloaded" to me. If the kid wants to wear Orange great, if not then that's OK too. Hope there isn't too much time spent on a player who won't see the field for at least a year and instead go after some immediate impact guys at DT and DE like others have mentioned. I don't care where the recruiting rankings end up, the Vols loaded up last year and they are bound to be ranked lower with fewer needs at the skill positions. Just bring home a couple of freshmen like Eric Berry at the DT tackle position and I would be well-satisfied.

If Mallett is any good, he will play for two years and be gone.
He could be gone in one if he only has to be out of high school 3 years to be eligible for the draft. Am I correct on that?
We don't need a one year wonder with a daddy attached to his backside.

I agree with Justin35us Coach Fulmer has been at Tennessee far too long, and has had too much success to be disrespected as some on this board do. The FOOLmer name calling is silly and makes you look like a retard, GROW UP!! It's easy to hide behind a keyboard, use a screen name that SOUNDS like you are a TN fan and call people names. He is our favorite University's coach and like President Bush, like him or not he stil deserves respect because of the office he holds.

The "Foolmers", "Foolmores", and "KrispyKreme" references are devices for wanna-bes to vent the frustration they feel over having nothing else in their lives but sitting before a computer terminal and reading and writing about UT sports, specifically football.
These guys post to just about every article that is published. I guess they don't have anything better, or more constructive, to do than rip on other folks. They will abuse our football team's head coach for almost any move he makes, regardless of what it is. Their negative responses are much more predictable and stale than any offense that any of our coaches has ever run.
These pathetic folks insist on "staying the course" with their constant gibberish about "pounding the fritters", "working like heck", "another dozen glazed", etc. They are the "three and out" sports fans that every program endures - bitter, resentful, bollixed "wanna-be" coaches.
We all are familiar with the modest quality of THEIR work.
