Quarles interviews with Vols

Michael also possible tight ends coach

Maryville High School coach George Quarles interviewed with Tennessee on Monday about the possibility of becoming the Vols’ tight ends coach, a source close to the situation told the News Sentinel on Tuesday.

Quarles, who has guided Maryville to four consecutive Class 4A state championships, spoke with newly hired UT offensive coordinator Dave Clawson on Friday about the position before officially interviewing Monday.

Tennessee needs only a tight ends coach to complete its offensive staff. The Vols have hired three new coaches this offseason, including Clawson, wide receivers coach Latrell Scott and running backs coach Stan Drayton.

Quarles, who won a national championship as a wide receiver at Furman, has been coach at Maryville since 1999. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Division I-AA Paladins.

Since taking over at Maryville, Quarles is 123-9 as a head coach with seven state championships.

Another potential candidate is former Tennessee graduate assistant coach Jason Michael. Michael, in his second season as the assistant tight ends coach with the NFL’s New York Jets, was a defensive graduate assistant with the Vols in 2004.

Michael also spent a year on the Oakland Raiders’ staff before joining the Jets for the 2006 season.

He graduated from Western Kentucky in 2002, after helping the Hilltoppers win a Division I-AA national title as a quarterback.

Tennessee could announce its final hire by this weekend.

Here ya go for all the posters chanting his name day after day. Did not know he has had college coaching experience. That makes this thought a little more realistic.

i say give em a shot. guy has won 60 straight. i know it's only hs but still not many schools can say they have won 60 straight!

i'm with you... know nothing about him but everyone in east tn loves him..... so we'll see..

what about norm chow... the titans fired him and he said he didn't know it was coming!!!!!!1 so i take phil didn't make a courtesy call just to see if he would be interested.. now he will be at ucla calling plays against us next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we need some recruits.....................

HMMMM....Maybe Fulmer does look at chat boards. Might be a place he could start his new resume' as a college position coach.Big jump though!

he is a winner hire the man good grief don't insult a man that is obviously a tremendous coach and developer of talent. It shouldn't even be a question about it.

and for all you folks that feel a need to trot out the failure at Notre Dumb we are not talking about making him head coach as far as Norm Chow goes-who cares.

Sounds like either Quarles (who apparently is dying to coach at UT) or Michael (with NFL experience coaching tight ends) would be great additions.
Can't imagine Chow coming in as a position coach.

Does being a GA at a I-AA school qualify as college coaching experience? On the other hand, no moving costs. He could share-a-ride with PAF every day...

3rdtenn 5:27 p.m. Agree on Chow. All one needs to do is watch the Titans. Chow is not a candidate. He wouldn't seriously give the UCLA job more than a token view. He's in over his head in the pros, but who wouldn't like the money and no recruiting.

Give Quarles a shot.

I like this hire. He knows how to win. Winning is a mindset. If you hire that type of mindset, then it breeds the same in others no matter where or what position they coach. "If your not First your Last."- Ricky Bobby, Talladega Nights. GO VOLS!!!!

What the hell, hire the man. It will set the tone for a whole new era and mindset at the University of Tennessee. Do it. Whoever said winners are winners is right, and I believe Phil has a whole new bunch of them. Good times to come. I feel it.

Here we go, Quarles is man of great character and a proven winner. I say give him a shot, because if he doesnt work out, what have you lost? Besides, he will be coaching one of his former players in Aaron Douglas and Tyler Maples is also a former player. Go Vols!

Norm Chow? Are you serious? The guy coached Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart for God's sake. You think he's gonna crawl into Knoxvile with his tail between his legs because the Titans let him go? Pass the pipe and get a clue!

Posted by invisiblekid on January 15, 2008 at 6:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

"The tight end is wide open over the middle John!!". Low risk move for Fulmer to hire Quarles as TE coach, it's not like the position actually exists at UT anymore. Morphed from an extra tackle to the H Back. Wait a minute, didn't we get a new OC?

Seriously, I was hoping to see this news for the past couple of weeks. I think Quarles would be a fine fit at the position. He obviously knows how to win and get the most out of his players as has been stated many times on here.

Posted by jonathan81254 on January 15, 2008 at 6:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Quarles sounds as if he would be a great addition. What amazes me is that so many of the posters were calling for him to be hired, and it might even happen. As someone said above, maybe Coach Fulmer DOES read these posts. I don't think UT can lose with either of these two. Fulmer may have just hired his possible replacement in Clawson, and so he's shown me he's comfortable with a coach of that magnitude coming in. Man, this is going to be great, seeing what happens next year. And even if this recruiting class isn't the greatest, as long as we get a couple of big uglies for the DL, we'll be all right. Go Vols!

Posted by texvol on January 15, 2008 at 6:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This is a courtesy interview. CPF cannot afford to recruit a guy and his coach in the same breath. It is just plain stupid.

Posted by GerryOP on January 15, 2008 at 6:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I hope you're right texvol. If he wanted to play that game he should have played it with the Michiganders. But, no relocation costs!

Posted by tngeoff on January 15, 2008 at 6:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Wow! I'll support that choice if it comes to pass. What a great trio that would create for our offense...as long as Fulmer does not try to bifurcate with Clawson. Just say NO to bifurcation!

Does this say anything about Clawson thinking "outside the box"??? This is first real big decesion as the OC for Tennessee, interested in what he does. Seems that he wouldnt what to take any chances right now and would hire a sure thing. I like the idea that he is willing to at least entertain the idea. Also, great job for for Clawson and Drayton to talk AF into staying..... Thats 1 for 1 as far as i am concerned... Has anyone heard about the potential Tennessee recruits that were supposed to make their announcements today???

I know about Quarles and his record, but that's about it.However from the overwhelming support I see for him in the east, I say that's good enough for me.He doesn't have recruiting experience , but I think his preceding reputation may help him secure the instate talent. And the talent in TN is getting better. This is the same manner that Cut came on board yrs ago.

Good post. However, TommyJack has made a valid suggestion about the fritters. Instead of "pounding" the fritter, he has suggested, "bifurcate" the fritter. We probaly need pdhuff's input as he created the entire fritter terminology, but until he nixes it, I buy it. Completely agree on great hires and weed debacle.

Hey as a Maryville High alumni I'd be excited to see Quarles get the job. I don't think making a highly successful HS coach a college position coach is much more of a stretch than making a I-AA HC an OC at the I-A level. Just my take on it.

And bifurcate? Better than regurgitate the fritter I suppose!

nafslov, I've been watching UT football for 40 years and Larry Seivers is one of the finest wide receivers to ever wear the orange. He only had adequate speed, about 4.6 in the 40, but the guy could jump out of the stadium.

He was a 2-time consensus All-American, and when he finished his career he held just about every receiving record.

We would call him a possession receiver today. Maybe if Erik Ainge had Larry Seivers catching the football this year we might won a few more games.

Posted by TurboFan on January 15, 2008 at 9:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Anti volsfan, chuck the ball his direction and Larry was guaranteed to come down with it. Thus why he was named All American twice. As opposed to the likes of a Willie Gault that outran everybody but would drop half that landed in his hands and he never went over the middle!

Larry was the SEC Male Athlete Of The Year voted in 1977 (the only other UT athletes to receive this were Todd Helton and Peyton Manning); Bill Majors dedication Award winner; twice the Simpson Theatre outstanding back Award winner voted by his teammates; AP, UPI, NEA, COACHES, TSN, CAMP and NCAA All-American in 1976; FbN, AP, FWAA and NCAA All-American in 1975; named by the SEC as an SEC Football Legend; named All-SEC first team in 1975 & 1976 by the both the AP and UPI; honored by UT as one of the 14 all-time Legends of the Game; nominated for the Heisman Trophy in 1976; selected to the 1977 Hula Bowl and Japan Bowl; was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks ahead of Mickey Marvin and Andy Spiva and I’m sure that I’ve missed some along the way!;

Larry Seivers had these UT records when he graduated:
Receptions in a game
Receptions in a season
Season receiving yards
Career receptions
Career receiving yards
Reception leader three years in a row

Guys like Quarles will eventually get his shot at the college game, whether UT hires him or not. I would just hate to look back 5 or 6 years from now and he has possibly bloomed into a top flight OC at some other SEC school and then becomes the head coach somewhere else.

Everyone has to get their initial opportunity to coach at this level, I'm sure fi you looked at resumes around the country you'll find some really good HC's and OC's that started at the HS level.

Give the guy a chance, like it has been said before its only the TE's, plus he'll have 2 kids he knows very well at TE in Douglas and Warren

Someone posted earlier that we're ranked 82nd in recruiting according to ESPN.com. According to rivals we're around 41. This is exactly why these recruiting rankings aren't as big of a deal as people try to make them out to be. You're telling me that these services are to be completely trusted when one of them has us ranked TWO times lower than the other? That's insane. We just need to recruit for need (as we do every year) and everything will be ok. Don't get too caught up in these rankings.

If we run a double TE set with two backs in the backfield and bifurcate the fritter do we score twice? Or would that only happen with Josh McNeil? Oh, wait, that would be bifornicate. Sorry.

anti-volsfan, didn't say Larry was better than Condredge or Stanley (never mind they played different positions making comparisons difficult) just that he had skills no one else did which were truly amazing. And did Fulmer play at the same time as Holloway? Not sure, maybe one year overlap. Before my time.

Thought Seivers was drafted by Green Bay (not Seattle) and cut the first day after timing drills. Never had a chance to catch a pass.

I have no quarrel :-) with any of the five candidates! Phillip knows far better than we do about all of this. My uneducated picks would go as follows:

1. Billy Napier is a young coach that has already established himself in two years at Clemson as their Recruiting Coordinator, excellent position coach and a super-recruiter (another one of those Top 25 guys).

2a. Chris Scelfo has head coaching experience, outstanding character and a long resume. UGA wanted a look at him last year and LSU is winking at him this year. He can recruit TX, LA and GA pretty well.

2b. Quarles seems like a fine young coach that is primed to move ahead and step up as soon as someone takes a chance on him. No college or recruiting experience is a negative though.

4. What can you say about Sparky? 30+ years of coaching; 4 years as a head coach, 1 in the NFL, 10 as OC and 12 in the SEC... At 55 is he willing and able to put in 90 hour weeks and recruit?

5. Jason Michael has a short history with UT and some NFL experience but has the least amount of years in the coaching ranks, no college other than GA work and no recruiting. Where is the upside?

BigOrangeVol ,I wouldn't be surprised if CPF & Clawson decide on Napier. If you notice CPF is hiring guys w/ ties to ares we use to do very well in recruiting, but have dropped some.Drayton FL,Clawson VA,Scott VA PA NC.Napier would help get a better pipeline back into SC.Although Quarles reputation would certainly help keep most of the instate talent in TN.

Big Orange Vol-

I am with you Billy Napier, Chris Scelfo, Jason Michael and then Quarles (needs to start at a Mid-major first). Take Woods completely off list. What about R. Gardner back for recruiting?

Posted by BigOrangeVol on January 16, 2008 at 1:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm down with Napier for sure! He ought to be a lock. Maybe bring Quarles in as a GA and see how it goes while he learns the ropes. You know with this young staff that they aren't all going to stick for a long time so the possibility of moving up is good for any GA.

BTW, Cut took Ron Middleton from Saban and now Applewhite is going to bail on him too going back to Texas. The word from my source that is very close to the program and incredibly reliable is that Satan is running them into the ground with the long hours and extreme pressure. Couldn't happen to a nicer carpet-bagging liar!!!

Larry was cut by Seattle after he separated a shoulder, then he went to Tampa Bay and got behind John McKay's worthless son, then went to Philidelphia late and got cut but was invited to come back the next season and finally went to Green Bay where Bart Star lead him on. So he just got fed up with the whole deal and came back home. He's done quite nicely too!

BigOrangeVol: Good update on Larry S. I can't imagine a successful coach earning 6 figures, signing on as a GA...long hrs. for chickenfeed. Just my opinion.

If you don't read the story, here is a Curt tidbit about long time season ticket holders getting hosed:

That galled Watson, a former Blue Angels pilot who now circles the world for a shipping company. He was among more than 1,000 current season ticketholders who were told, when Tennessee created the scholarship fund in 1986, that they could keep their seats as long as they renewed their season tickets.

"They're saying to those 1,023 people, 'We made this promise to you but we need money now, so we're going to renege on our word,' " he says. "If that's the way they're going to run the program, and the almighty dollar is that important, I'm going cold turkey. I'm quitting Tennessee football altogether."

You're very welcome. There are so many very interseting former Vols. I met Curt several times and while he was intense, he was a good guy. His intesity is what drove him to success in s many things. I had known he was with the Blue Angels back then but a female friend of mine from Jersey who was living in Calirornia and working for newspaper out there did a personal story on him. When I saw her she was all aglow and super impressed by him. She was the one who told me he was the commander of the entire team. Whether she was just overwhelmed and saying the greatest things she could out of her great impression I don't know, but that was her info. He is a big guy for those planes no doubt. In that you're Air Force, I don't know if I told you that my youngest daughter is an MP in the Air Force Reserves and has aready served one tour in Iraq. My Uncle is Lt Col Retired from WW II (from Watauga, TN) and flew B-29s. My sister is a professor at the Air Force War College in Montgomery. My Father-in-Law is retired and a former B-52 Navigator. My oldest Brother was also Air Force. Anyway my friend, have a great night and go Vols!

George will do a fine job for the VOLS...it's in his blood. Good career path for a man born in White Pine, TN!

Posted by flyinpro on January 18, 2008 at 9:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)

As a father of three sons who were blessed play for G. Quarles at Maryville I can say without reservation that if GQ get's the job it will be UT's gain and Maryville's loss. He is a fine man and has principles only talked about at UT, but seldom seen these days. UT shows recruit's how to party and circumvent that law and the program could use some discipline that is the missing component of a winning team. Phil can coach but has turned his head and ran interference to many times for the thugs in the program. If he would really have zero tolerance like Pat does for the Lady Vol's, then UT will win championships again UT was once a stellar SEC program, it should be a blessing and privilege for a kid to run through the "T" and play in front of one of the largest crowd's in the country and another fan base watching on TV at home and all over the country. If that is not enough, go develop to an NFL player somewhere else, I would rather win with kids like Bill Bates, who was never expected to pan out but had the heart and will to become better. UT over looks many kids who could play and want to play at UT but because some recruit somewhere it thought to be better by some web page or press person the hard working kid is over looked.

GQ is TN born and raised and has produced many fine young men who were very average HS athletes who bonded together to beat many teams who were bigger, faster and regarded as better. But when the scoreboard ticked off the final seconds it was he and his kids celebrating, casing trophies and ordering rings. Top recruits don't win games, kids with heart trusting and respecting the integrity of his coach does. The X's and O's are the same at all levels of football the only real thing that is different is the ability of the players and the money involved. True GQ doesn't have recruiting experience but here in TN there are few kids who don't know who GQ is and in my opinion recruiting is why over rated in the first place. IF GQ gets the job and get's to pick his players one can only wonder what might happen at UT.

I don't know Quarles from Adam's house cat. If CPF and CDC hire him... I'm fine with that. As far as a lack of discipline, CPF followed the policy. That's his job. GQ will not come in and change that policy. If he does his job... he'll follow it too.

If he really has good ties in Tn HS football then maybe he'll help them shut down the borders... but how good are his ties to west Tn?

I have no doubt he can coach but there are differences between HS and college football concerning X's and O's.

FTR, the last two BCS champions were SEC schools that have had as many if not more public discipline issues as UT. You can educate yourself... but might want to start with Ryan Perilloux.

The worst thing about the UT problem of late was that a recruit was involved and that could bring the NCAA in to snoop.

Again, Quarles sounds like a great candidate. I think all those rumored as finalists are great candidates. Apparently CPF was impressed enough with Quarles to interview him twice... which should be a good sign either now or in the not so distant future...

Posted by sjt18 on January 18, 2008 at 12:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

To clarify, I don't think recruiting hurts Quarles or shouldn't if he's well connected across the state. UT can use in-state help as well as outside the state. There may even be schools that he can dig into that are considered pipelines to other schools... in particular Auburn.

Posted by Colliervol on January 18, 2008 at 1:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Good points sjt. But I don't think the NCAA would be looking at the little ganja episode. Even though the book is about a foot thick with rules, I'll bet there isn't one where it's against the rules for your hosts to be just plain stupid. And that appears to be all that was wrong with that deal.

As far as the players being choir boys, well, I've always said this ain't Harvard vs Yale that we're talking about. And we aren't going anywhere without some kids who frankly are going to make a mistake here and there. The way some of these kids were raised, well, it's a pipe dream to think they will all be angels. Where I differ with some folks is that I absolutely do not believe in the "Four Strikes" rule. That's ludicrous. At most, it should be two. Anybody can make one mistake or be a victim of circumstances. But, if they turn around and do something again, it's on them.

Posted by GerryOP on January 18, 2008 at 2:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Exactly Collier. Four strikes is a bit too liberal even by my standards! Two should be sufficient.

Posted by sjt18 on January 18, 2008 at 2:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't disagree Collier. The rule is too lenient. I think among other things a kid should effectively be under house arrest for a significant period following the infraction. Any way it is done, the leash should be very, very short.

I think I saw someone post a section of the NCAA rules concerning hosts. This could end up a bigger problem. The recruits aren't supposed to be exposed to parties, alcohol, drugs, etc. It is the university's job to police that.

If they think UT has followed its policies and this isn't indicative then everything will be fine. If they find a couple of more recruits that say they were exposed to drugs or alcohol... it could be bad.
