Ole Miss names offensive coordinator

OXFORD, Miss. - Kent Austin, head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League, has been hired as offensive coordinator at Mississippi, head football coach Houston Nutt said Wednesday.

Terms of Austin's contract were not disclosed.

"There's nothing like hiring a quarterback coach who has played the position, especially at his alma mater," Nutt said. "Kent Austin is a great character person and an excellent fundamental teacher.

"One of the first things you notice is his passion for coaching quarterbacks. With his knowledge and his expertise in coaching quarterbacks and the passing game, Kent will be a tremendous asset to our program."

Austin, 44, lead Saskatchewan this past season to the Grey Cup, which is the CFL's version of the Super Bowl.

Austin was the Ole Miss quarterback from 1981 to 1985, passing for 6,184 yards, which ranks second all-time in school history.

His professional career included one year in the NFL with the St. Louis Cardinals before he went on to a career in the CFL.

The hiring of Austin completes a nearly two-week search after Nutt's first choice for offensive coordinator, David Lee, left to take a job with the NFL's Miami Dolphins.

Hope he remember we play with 11 men down here and that the guy can't run forward before the snap!

Where's Coach O at anyway?

Nutt's done stranger things...like taking his best RB out of the game on 3rd and 1.

Grey Cup is to the Super Bowl as the Washington Generals are to the Globetrotters.

American Football not only has 11 men... the field is 10 yards shorter, about 12 yards more narrow, and we get 4 downs per 10 yards.

Let's see if "dee ole Canuck up dair in de Great White North can comm on down hair and play some bahl."

Does this mean that Arkansas will switch from running the "Wild Hog" offense to the "Canadian Bacon" offense?

Kent Austin is from Middle Tennessee...I believe he played at Brentwood Academy under Carlton Flatt, before going on to Mississippi.

He will know his way around the south.

You guys make fun of a coach who won a championship in professional football but nearly wet yourselves talking about a high school coach from East Tennessee...LMAO

At some level it goes back to a certain kind of clannish xenophobia.

No one left on the A list. Just goes to show you how much power Fulmer really has left.

" wet yourselves talking about a high school coach from East Tennessee". Now that's a good one, I don't care who you are. And oh so true.

"Austin, 44, lead Saskatchewan this past season to the Grey Cup, which is the CFL's version of the Super Bowl." So he "lead" them? This one we can't blame on the KNS, I am surprised that the AP can't proof read their copy before they release it. Or maybe it is some Canadian lingo that I am not familiar with, eh?

i don't have anything against the man. I'm happy for Ole Miss, the coach, the Roughriders, and the Great White North. Can't people just have a little bit of fun once in awhile?

At least you don't see any "*&#^#%" words with our posts, or comments like: "Well, CPF should have jumped Ole Miss and hired this guy before another SEC trumps him and lands the big one."
