AUSTIN — Former Texas quarterback Major Applewhite is rejoining the Longhorns as an assistant coach, leaving his job as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama.
The 29-year-old Applewhite was the youngest offensive coordinator in the Football Bowl Subdivision last season and returns to the campus where he was a fan favorite as a player from 1998-2001.
“We’re really excited to have Major back,” Texas head coach Mack Brown said Wednesday. “We always knew when Major was playing that he was a student of the game and would be a terrific coach one day. He’s living up to that.”
Texas scheduled a Thursday news conference to introduce Applewhite as the assistant head coach and running backs coach. His salary will be $250,000, the same amount he was paid at Alabama.
Texas had the vacancy after running backs coach Ken Rucker was reassigned within the athletic department. Applewhite is the second new addition from the state of Alabama. Brown hired defensive coordinator Will Muschamp away from Auburn earlier this month.
Applewhite still holds several Texas passing records, including career yards (8,353), season yards (3,357) and touchdown passes (60).
He has been a rising star in assistant coaching circles for several years, moving from a graduate assistant at Texas to the full-time staff at Syracuse in 2005. He was offensive coordinator at Rice in 2006 and spent last season with the Crimson Tide.
“It’s exciting to be a Longhorn again,” Applewhite said. “The opportunity to come back to my alma mater, working with Coach Brown .... is special.

Curious what direction Bama will go...I can't seem them running the spread.

I was gonna say bad move by taking a loew position but money is the saem and I'm sure he has been promised the OC job in time or HC...

I wonder how this will effect their recruits? Makes you wonder if the coaching staff at Bama knew all along that Applewhite was leaving. Bet they didn't mention it to any recruits though.

Norm chow at bama!? He didn't help the Titens, so if he goes to bama maybe he will mess there offence up too.

Turns out Saban is a liar and a pain in the neck to work for. Who would have thought that?
Posted by VolinSippi on January 17, 2008 at 2:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Maybe Saban will hire Cam Cameron and they can run Bammer in the ground the way they did Miami.

C YA LATER BAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Basketball_Jones on January 17, 2008 at 2:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Vince Young was Norm Chow's problem. He is horrible in the pro's. Chow had no issues with Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer or Matt Leinart. Plus the Titans have no receivers either and the ones they have Young can't hit. Move the Titans back to Texas

Looks like the grass wasn't greener at Bama as it is in TX. Losing your OC suddenly right in front of signing day for recruits would not be a good sign.
6-6 regular season with losses to LA-Monroe and Auburn did not set well with the million dollar boosters, another season like that and Bama wll be back in the market for a new HC.

Not sure I understand the comment "He has been a rising star in assistant coaching circles for several years..." when it goes on to say he moved to a full time position at Syracuse in 2005. Unless my math is wrong (and it can't be - I went to UT) that's only 2 years of full time coaching.

I hate Alabama so much that its great to me when anyone leaves that school.

Sounds like Major couldn't handle the High Stakes of the SEC, back to Texas with you....If Bama were to go 6-6 again next year, he'd be looking for work again anyways. Smart move...

Move for a raise of $0.00. I'll have to mull that one for a while. I guess he learned all from Saban he could in one season. Quick study, that young man.
Posted by 55Vol on January 17, 2008 at 3:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)
pd: maybe Saban doesn't know has much as everyone and the media thinks he does. It was a quick study because there wasn't much to learn????

He did the right thing for himself. He has now got on his resume OC at Ala under Nick Saban and Assistant Head Coach to Mack Brown at Texas. His goal is obviously to move up in the coaching world and building a strong resume is one way to get there. This move isn't about money, it's about the future and going home to his alma mater. If you played ball at UT and were coaching at Texas as the OC and Tenn offered you the same pay to come back home and be an Assistant Head Coach, what choice would you make? Good for him, and it's always good to see any unexpected changes in the Alabama program just before signing day(although they already have 26 commits that have them #2 in recruiting as of now).

No, Keep the Titans in Nashville where they belong!

Idaho, your math is off, 2005 - Syracuse, 2006 - Rice, 2007 Alabama = 3 years. I had trouble with Calculus too.

Titans will be loyal to Nashville as long as Nashvillians continue to be loyal to the Titans with thier money. If that ever dries up....Titans are gone.. But the Tennessee Volunteers will always be here...GO VOLS!

I lived in Austin while Major was at U of Texas. I thought he was a good guy and should have played over that idiot Chris Sims.
I am glad to see a class act like Applewhite get out of Tuscaloser and all of the bad influence that accompanies the Crimson Turd.
Best of luck Major
Roll Turd Roll, right down the old toilet bowl!

Saban is so overrated! He's only had 1 season(2003 with LSU) with less than 3 losses. I'm not suprised that 'Bama wasn't that great or that he's losing some of his staff. It just sucks that their best game of the year came against us. Cal and Florida did the same and flopped down the stretch. Thank G-d we open with 2-10 UAB so we can work out the kinks with Clawson and get our young guys more experience. I think the Vols will suprise a lot of people next year.

heel-fan-23,
Here in Austin the (other) UT people think Major is a saint. The guy probably won't need to carry a wallet because folks will give him whatever he needs(comparable to Bill Clinton in a MacDonalds during his presidency). It would be a no-brainer to leave Tuscalooser for Austin. The UT fans probably hope he does get the OC job (sooner than later) and sends Greg Davis packing.

Texans almost always go home. Plus, weigh it out....live in Austin or live in Tuscaloosa...Austin, Tuscaloosa? No brainer.

Heck , I'm from Chattanooga and I know I'd rather be in Austin than Tuscaloser (correct spelling) even though Tusc is closer to my real home.

You are right nholme31, we will always have the VOLS. The Nashville Oilers hit the bricks anytime as far as I am concerned.

Am I the only one that remembers Applewhite getting the screws at Texas?? Golden boy Chris Simms recants his commitment to THE REAL UT to go to the OTHER UT. Mack Brown screws Applewhite out of his starting position and Simms starts!! This after Applewhite was tearing it up in the Big 12!! Applewhite had to bail out young golden dome just so they could win their bowl game!! GREAT decision Applewhite!! That tells you just HOW BAD working for the University of Alabubba really is!!

dfreeman: I remember well. No Texas fan, but I have to put up with them...coverage, etc. Mack Brown screwed Applewhite royally. Simms was most overrated QB ever and each time he went down, Applewhite would pull their chestnuts from the fire. Huge favorite here.

TJ - I don't like Texas that much either!! I do remember thinking highly of Applewhite Though!! I hope he returns the favor to ole Big Mack by screwing him out of the HC job!!

Applewhite is a good guy it seems and he did get "ye olde shaft" while at Texas. It was pretty much the equivalent to benching Ainge in favor of BJ Coleman during this season.
He will be the OC within two years... but with this guy's upward mobility, he may be the head coach by spring!

TOUCHDOWN unless you have a special place on 5th street you are one street off
It's 6th street.
but your post is dead on with Austin vs. Tuscaloosa, I live in San Antonio and there is no comparison!!!!
Plus Saban is pain in A$$ to work for!!!
TXVOLSFAN
GO VOLS

Austin was a great place to live and I miss it. It was too far away from Tennessee, but I endured. Used to drive to San Antonio on Saturdays and just walk around; great city!
I would like to see the Big Orange faithfull fill Neyland Stadium for the Spring game this year and take the "Largest Crowd for Spring Game" crown away from the Cheating Tide. Since Neyland is much bigger than the stadium in Tuscaloser, they could never get the title back. Everyone at the Spring game couls hold up a sign that reads "Beat this Bammer Morons"!!
Go Vols!
