LITTLE ROCK — Bobby Petrino has already landed a major recruit for Arkansas — former Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett.
Mallett has transferred to Arkansas and will have three years of eligibility after sitting out the 2008 season. The 6-foot-7 freshman played in 11 games for the Wolverines last season, but announced he was leaving after Rich Rodriguez replaced retiring coach Lloyd Carr.
Although he went to high school on the Texas side of Texarkana, where his parents work in the school system, Mallett lived on the Arkansas side. Now he returns to his home state.
“He’s happy to be there,” Jim Mallett said of his son Thursday night. “He says, ’Dad, I’m back at home.” ’
Arkansas spokesman Kevin Trainor said Thursday that Ryan Mallett was in the process of enrolling.
Petrino was hired to replace Razorbacks coach Houston Nutt last month, and he faces a rebuilding project now that star tailbacks Darren McFadden and Felix Jones have decided to skip their senior seasons and go to the NFL.
Mallett figures to provide a boost once he’s eligible. He was 61-of-141 for 892 yards with seven touchdown passes and five interceptions last season while filling in for Chad Henne when he was injured.
Jim Mallett said his son had a great experience at Michigan. However, Rodriguez runs a spread offense that works well with mobile quarterbacks. Ryan Mallett is best suited for a pro-style offense.
“Different system — can’t do anything about that,” Jim Mallett said. “Had to find somewhere Ryan would fit in.”
When Mallett was coming out of high school, Arkansas already had quarterback Mitch Mustain, who signed with the Razorbacks in 2006 as a highly touted recruit from Springdale. But Mustain transferred to Southern California after one year at Arkansas, leaving Casey Dick as the Razorbacks’ starter this past season. Dick will be a senior next season, and after that Mallett will have a chance to step in.
Jim Mallett said his son considered Tennessee, Texas A&M and UCLA, but after visiting Arkansas, he didn’t make any trips to visit the other schools.
“Arkansas has always been a favorite of his,” Jim Mallett said. “Because he grew up a Razorback.”

That is a big kid. Well...Jonathan Crompton will have his day. Make it worth the billing! Chief...Like VolCR points out...this kid is like a defensive tackle with exceptional skills. To coin a Northern expression, "Not for nuthin'", but I don't see a lot of new and fresh blood on our defensive line. Is someone actually thinking about that at this time? Now instead of a fast giant in McFadden we have a great passer bigger than McFadden in the Hawgs backfield. Please...for all of us...at least act like we have some candidates for defensive tackle in the pipeline.

Mallet goes 0 and however many against Crompton and Coleman. Just like fat ass Stafford will.

KSN, this was reported 3 days ago in an Ark paper. Might want to start reporting recent news instead of stuff that is 3 days old.

I see why they didn't report this till today in the KNS, didn't wanna look like Pete Carroll's lover Kirk Herbstreat when he said Miles was all but living in Mich. This kid will end up like Brandon Stewart, its hard for a QB to transfer.
Posted by osunut2 on January 17, 2008 at 10:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Probably true, except for the small fact that Brandon Stewart wasn't any good to begin with.

Marc_Ash:
It may have been reported in the Arkansas papers but it was only from sources and the Associated Press decided not to use the reports until it was made offical last night.
Sorry we don't have an Arkansas bureau.
I'm just posting a story to let SEC fans know the news is official.

Mr. Mallet, please meet Mr. Berry,
Mr. Berry, this is Mr. Mallet.
enough said. welcome to the best football conference in the land.

osunut2, that was a very stupid comment. Brandon Stewart was a good QB and would have stayed if Manning were not here. As volCR, his play at Texas A & M put us in the NC game.

He'll be 6'8", 272 by the time he's elgible. Could play many positions. I'd get him a K Kreme card in Fayettevile. tell him to enjoy for 9 months. Then join the local Hog gym. Work the anabolic bigarreau fritters off.
I'm guessing Crompton will do fine. We'll all faint if we see him actually head down field with the pig underarm. I think to biggest keys to Vol's season will be keeping Hardesty healthy and (droning) d-line play. Another receiver wouldn't hurt. Coach 'em up Chavis. Can't take another 10 win season akin to Jeopardy. BCS or bust.

Sorry guys, but our perfect record put us in the title game. Texas A&M just helped decide the opponent.

Phil Kaplan-
Nice slam about the "Arkansas bureau"!
Maybe, just maybe you should take some constructive criticism from the readers, and not try and start crap. Face it...the KNS was slow on reporting...opps I forgot that journalists are NEEEVER wrong.

Unlikely that UT ever plays him in the reg season. If he has a decent year next year, he'll have no reason not to go into the draft.

I also heard Tennessee hired Clawson as Offensive Coordinator.

All I'm doing is explaining why we did not have story confirming he was enrolled until today. There was an AP story here on Monday night that said the father said nothing was official. However, it was quite obvious that he was going to Arkansas ater the dad confirmed he visited Arkansas over the weekend.
We rely on wire services to report on news outside of Knoxville.

It doesn't matter anyway. Petri-nomad will only be there a year. Then he'll move on to some other job and it will be Mallett floundering under another new head coach by the time he's a starter.
Hogs in 2009 with Mallett as a starter . . . 3-9

Old news to me. I posted two days ago that MMallett had enrolled no matter what his daddy was saying. He also moved into the dorms on Monday night of this week. His name even appeared on the “enrolled” list at Arkansas earlier this week.
On a side note, while moving into the dorm, he knocked a sprinkler head off/lose around 11PM and the dorm was evacuated until repairs could be made. How to make friends and influence people LOL

Yo Kaplan, don't worry about these complainers and ignorant makers of non-existent dictionary entries. The story wasn't official and I, as someone who appreciates OFFICIAL news rather than hear-say, understand that. I wonder how many of these rednecks majored in journalism or have any background whatsoever in reporting any type of news other than telling their wife/cousin that "it burns when I pee".

I'm not sure mallet wanted to be a vol. anyway. He was just following a coach. But what concerns me is the number of players who have talked about being a vol. but went elsewhere, hopefully next year the new coachs will have a good recruiting year.

Thanks for verifying the report Mr. Kaplan. I enjoy this site and use it to follow Tennessee sports since I live out of state. I am a graduate of UTK and proud to be a Vol. However, I don't appreciate the whiners on this site that think they are God's gift to Tennessee. The good news is that "most" of the bloggers here are good people who write well. Keep up the good work.

Another thing, I'm sick as hell of you Vol Nazi's that attack other posters on this website. This is an open forum for free speech on Tennessee football. I would venture a guess that all of us here care about this program or we wouldn't be here. So cut the insults! If someone wants to be sarcastic or funny or angry about the goings on of Tennessee football...that's OKAY! S.T.F.U. you orange-colored glasses-wearing goobs!!!

Something to consider in support of jwraymonds's post: I think these hires sound amazing - am actually as pumped as I've been in years about the next season. I actually think they could make Fulmer look real good, REAL good - if he lets them do their job. But at the end of the day, if they do make him look great, and he gets coach of the year and a title, remember....they aren't here because Fulmer made a change to better the program, or because he made a "tough decision" to win the war, they are here because of one reason only.... Cutcliffe quit.
VolnDothan - I assume you are aiming that at folks that take cheap, un-educated jabs at KNS?

Again...Volrocket...stop it...really. And stop blogging words into VolnDothan mouth.
Posted by RocketVol on January 17, 2008 at 1 p.m. (Suggest removal)
scott... I am not a hater. I just call it like it is and always have. I think Phil made some great hires, but not because he initiated a "get well scheme" for the program. Why wasn't this search done in '99?....and the last time? I stated earlier that Cutcliffe leaving could be terrible - and it could end up that way. But yet I think Phil did an excellent job with his outside, seemingly thorough search. I call it like it is. I have no agendas.
Your attack on KNS really does look lame to me, though. I'm not sure why folks like yourself can't come on here and offer good, documented, data supported, discussion - but start poking at the KNS or the objective thinkers on these posts for heavens sake. If you are concerned about the speed you get your news - go to CNN. Hey, you are here - you must feel good about something KNS has done.

I do feel good about the KNS, especially John Adams. What a great guy, now there's a guy that is never out of line on any issue.
Let's face it. Fulmer has done a better job than any coach could have done here. Mainly because no other coach in his right mind would take this job, because of fans like me and you.

with regard to branndon stewart, i remember after he led A&M to a victory over nebraska that put tennessee in the first bcs title game, he said in the post game interview that when he signed with tennessee, he intended to take them to the national championship, and commented that, "looks like i've just done it."

It's amazing to me how an article on one topic gets convoluted and turned to other totally unrelated topics by these posts. Free speech certainly dictates the right to do it, but it's easier to follow the logic of all these good posts when they stay on the topic of the article.

I live and grew up in Michigan. All of my best friends go to UMich. I've seen Mallett out before and he is absolutely enormous and let me tell you, he carries his weight well. He's not fat. I've seen him play as well and the kid has LOADS of potential and an absolute cannon of an arm, maybe the strongest in the country as a freshman. The only thing that could hold him back is the lack of playmakers at Arkansas. If he stayed at Michigan in a pro-style offense, he would have flourished. That being said, he also thinks his sh*t doesn't stink and was a drunken moron at the bars as a spring semester enrollee last year.

Wow, I got an official response from Phil Kaplan. Did I ruffle your feathers a little there bud?
As a journalist, I'm sure you do research (or at least I hope you do). Just to clarify one point. It was not just "a rumor until last night". In fact, Otis Kirk (Hawgsports.com) broke the story Monday morning (10:47am to be exact)stating Mallett officially had enrolled at Arkansas and had officially transfered.
Regardless of whether or not this was "just a rumor", KSN staff (yourself included) have never had a problem reporting "rumors" before so I'm not buyin what your sellin.
As an SEC fan I appreciate you "breaking" the story for us Vol fans. Some of us are a little slow after all, and it sometimes takes a few days for new news to sink in...even without and Arkansas Bureau.
