Pearl to do color for Lady Vols' game

First he paints his bare chest orange and now he’s donning a headset and microphone.

University of Tennessee men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl will be the color commentator for next’s Thursday broadcast of the game between Arkansas and the Lady Vols on MyVLT2.

“I’m excited about broadcasting my first college basketball game and the fact that it’s Pat (Summitt) and the Lady Vols makes it even that much more special,” Pearl said. “I was going to be at the game anyway so I might as well be working. Dick Vitale has nothing to worry about.”

Pearl made national news when he and some of his players showed up without shirts and painted orange with G-O-V-O-L-S on their chests for a Duke at Lady Vols’ game last January.

Summitt later repaid the gesture by dressing up as a cheerleader and performing at a Vols’ game.

The Vol Network’s Bob Kesling will provide the play-by-play and WVLT’s Rick Russo the courtside coverage.

“I’m looking forward to working with coach Pearl and having him on the other side of the camera for what promises to be an exciting and entertaining new addition to our broadcast team,” Kesling said.

MyVLT2 can be found on Comcast and Knology channel 8, at Charter on channel 11 and on DirectTV at channel 30.

Pearl, never at a loss for words, has had some broadcasting experience providing insight on the Final Four for CBS last year. He also just did a segment on ESPN’s “Rome is Burning” earlier this week with Jim Rome.

How could he NOT do well?

Is he doing color with or without a shirt?

Posted by ctownvol on January 17, 2008 at 8:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm voting WITH the shirt. It is good to see Pearl supporting the Lady Vols and Pat supporting the men's team. I'd like to see CPF at a few more showing a little love.

Yeah, with a shirt, CPF.

What a great guy (and coach!)...just like in our football program it is the PEOPLE and their integrity and respect and love for each other that makes our athletic department such a great organization...just consider...Summit...Pearl...and yes, Fulmer and his coaches....generally class acts and good people to be around....GoVols!

Pearl's enthusiasm for the Tennessee basketball and life in general is contagious. GO VOLS!!!!

Wow, this is a Lady Vols game I might actually watch.

Pearl apparently knows the Ray Mears secret of showmanship - think about it, he's practically the heir to "Big Orange Country" because he is giving us a reason to care again when the snows fly and the Vols burn up the courts. He wore the Orange Blazer. There just was no conceivable way that the Vols were going to lose this game at home to Vandy tonight. It's so wonderful to have a men's team worthy of sharing the same court as the Lady Vols.

When is the game and will it be broadcast on Comcast in Nashville?

Always the promoter...following in the footsteps of the late great Coach Mears.

Some people are just never happy. If Phil would have been at the game last night some of you would have been on here saying he needed to be out recruiting not at a basketball game.

I wouldn't have said that juicetke. There's nobody left to recruit.

Anyone find it interesting that both Pearl and Summitt are getting divorced? Pat Pearl?

Posted by TommyJack on January 18, 2008 at 2:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh man! What is this, Oprah?? :)

So when are Bruce and Pat going to get together? Gosh, could you imagine family dinner if they were married? This is a great thing, the Tennessee family owes this man, in the life time of many of the readers and posters on here (35 and under) he has built a team out of nothing. We had Wade and some good years in the early 2000's, but nothing like what he has done!

You people make me sick, discussing these coaches private lives like its National Enquirer material. Have some respect for these coaches, their privacy and direct your hatred toward our opponents...........SNAP!

Geesh what a horrible dream, for a minut their i thought I sounded just like vol4jesus!

minute spelled incorrectly and their used incorrectly from some other posts....

The Vols, especially the basketball team and coach Pearl, are getting a lot of good press in the buckeye state. I wonder if this will continue after the Bucks get thrashed Saturday by the Vols!

Oh PLEEEEEZE! Leave the shirt on.

Does Pearl have anyone who can ride a unicycle?

Posted by pearlman on January 19, 2008 at 2:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Bruce has been the best thing that has happened to Tennessee mens basketball since Coach Mears. I just hope Hamilton knows we better give him a raise before he heads somewhere that will give him the money he deserves. After the year Kentucky is having it want be long before they throw thier money around and get a top coach.

Dollar on dollar,I don't think the Kitty Kats have our amount of ''cat fat" to throw around,if we wanted to.

I think this is one of the great intangibles that UT has..coaches who are willing to go the extra mile for each other's program for the good of the university. Although you might not be able to point to the scoreboard and say that the Vols posted x number of points because of it, I do think that it means something to both the players and the fans (Possibly, even some recruits) to have the other coaches show up to these games. I recall the first year Bruce came to UT he was running around smacking the football players trying to get everyone motivated. Basically, Hamilton is doing a fine job.

This is great, if everyone would use their talents likewise.
