Lady Vols have easy time with MTSU in season opener

The Tennessee women's tennis team opened the spring season with a 7-0 victory over Middle Tennessee State on Friday night at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.

The No. 22 Lady Vols swept all nine matches and dropped just one set. The victory improves co-head coach Mike Patrick's record in home openers to 20-1 during his tenure at UT.

"For a first match, this was a very exciting win," UT co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick said. "I was really pleased with how our team came together both chemistry and performance-wise tonight. We really seemed to take the match to Middle Tennessee instead of waiting for them to come to us and that was a really good sign as we get ready to take on (No. 12) North Carolina on Monday."

Volleyball: Lady Vols coach Rob Patrick announced Gregg Whitis has been hired as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Lady Vols.

Whitis comes to UT after spending the past two seasons as an assistant at Michigan.

"I've watched the progress that Tennessee has made over the past few years and have been really impressed with the tradition that has been established," Whitis said in a release. "It's not everyday that you get to work at an institution that supports women's athletics the way Tennessee does."

The 13-year coaching veteran also spent time as recruiting coordinator at Clemson (2003-2005) and assistant coach at SMU (2001-2002).

Previous coaching stops came at Kankakee Community College, South Dakota State, South Carolina and Northern Michigan.

Women's Swimming: Senior Carly Mathes won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races (50.97 and 1:48.19) and the 200 individual medley (2:03.69) and Staley McCartney won her first diving event (3-meter springboard) as coach Matt Kredich's eighth-ranked Lady Vols defeated Indiana 172-128 Friday at Ray Bussard Pool.

Christine Magnuson won the 100 and 200 butterfly races and freshman Aleksa Akerfelds took the 200 and 500 freestyle events. UT's other winners were Lauren LeRoy (1-meter diving), Michelle King (50 freestyle) and Martina Moravcikova (200 breaststroke).

"We had some phenomenal swims today," Kredich said. "I think Carly had the best dual meet she has ever had. We had a lot of people step up today that we count on to win events."

Men's Swimming: Diving proved to be the difference as Indiana took the first four places on the 3-meter board and first two at 1-meter and the No. 7 Hoosiers dealt the No. 6 Vols their first dual-meet loss of the season.

Ben Henson also proved to be a fly in the ointment by winning three races, including the 100-yard butterfly. Patrick Todd also won three events for the Hoosiers. The Vols were led by freshman Geof Sanders, who won the 500 and 1,000 freestyles and freshman Brad Craig, who won the 200 breaststroke.

The Vols won the opening relay (200 medley) but Indiana closed out the meet by edging UT by .03 of a second in the 400 freestyle relay.
