Ohio State shot in the foot by misfiring 3s

Buckeyes finish 2-of-20 from beyond the arc

This wasn't the week to beat Tennessee shooting 3-pointers.

Vanderbilt found out Thursday night, going an uncharacteristic 3-of-21 beyond the arc in an 80-60 loss to the Vols.

Ohio State surely liked its odds of beating that miserable performance in an intersectional CBS television battle Saturday at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Wrong.

The Buckeyes finished a nightmarish 2-of-20 in a 74-69 loss, their worst 3-point outing of the season.

In fact, Ohio State missed four 3-pointers in the final 25 seconds, the first three of which would have tied the score at 72-72.

"I was fine with the looks we got,'' Ohio State coach Thad Matta said of the frustrating finish.

"They weren't going to give us a (open) three. To their credit, they stayed home and challenged.''

Jamar Butler, Ohio State's leading scorer on the season, came in shooting 44.8 percent from 3-point range. He finished 1-of-7, his last miss coming in the final seconds after Tyler Smith's free throws had extended UT's lead to 74-69.

"We're locking up right now,'' said UT guard JaJuan Smith. "We take a lot of pride in our defense.''

Matta was hoping to get Butler a look at a three earlier, after Tyler Smith missed the front end of a one-and-one with 57 seconds to play, leaving Tennessee's lead at 72-69.

However, the Vols wouldn't let Butler get free and 7-foot freshman Kosta Koufos had to launch a 3-pointer to avoid a shot-clock violation.

It missed and ricocheted out of bounds. But when UT threw the inbounds pass away, Ohio State got another crack.

Freshman Jon Diebler missed a 3-pointer, the Buckeyes rebounded and then Diebler missed another 3-pointer to finish 0-for-4 on the day.

"We had one of the best 3-point shooters any of us has ever seen open,'' said guard Evan Turner. "He didn't hit it. He'll come back tomorrow and make that shot nine times out of 10.''

The fact that Ohio State's David Lighty had to call a timeout to avoid a turnover - under pressure from Ramar Smith - with 6:01 left affected the final minute.

It was the Buckeyes' last timeout.

"We got a couple of pretty decent looks in that situation, no timeouts,'' said Matta. "We were calling (the offense) on the fly out of transition.

"As soon as we got a good one we had to shoot it.''

Turner scored a career-high 21 points, all inside the arc. Koufos, the McDonald's All-America freshman, got all 13 of his points in the second half.

Senior forward Othello Hunter manhandled the Vols with 17 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots.

The loss was Ohio State's third in a row, a first since the 2004-05 season. The Buckeyes had also won all four previous meetings with Tennessee.

Better This Year: The Buckeyes said UT was improved over the team Ohio State beat twice last year by a combined three points.

"This year,'' said Hunter, "they've got guys that can take it to the basket off penetration.''

Matta agreed UT has more weapons:

"Dane Bradshaw was one of my all-time favorite players. Man, did he make that team go.

"Now you add Tyler Smith and J.P. Prince and they can drive it, they can pass it and they can rebound. They can do so many things.

"Them and (North) Carolina are the two best teams we've played this year.''

Good Effort: The Buckeyes indicated Saturday's effort was one of their best of the season.

"If we play that hard,'' said Turner," we won't have to worry about losing three in a row any more. We won't have to worry about any losses.''

Added Matta, "You want to say you're proud of the guys, which I am, but we didn't get what we came for.''

Now that thats over lets get ready for Kentucky. They shocked Vandy. Hope Crews gets a few minutes to come in and help out on the defensive boards. We are giving our opponents to many chances to score off rebounds. Hope the KY alumni aren't looking to an on court interview for Bruce. Should be a great game.

When you run their legs off and contest their shot, you get 2 for 20 and 3-21. There are not a lot of guys who can make 3's when their tired with a hand in their face. Great D Vols!

should have read "they're tired"

Agree with their quotes,if they play that hard the rest of the way, they won't lose many more. But can they? I'll be damn if Ole Mess didn't screw around and lose to Auburn. That don't help much. I guess we better get used to all bringing their A game for us.

They shouldn't have had to worry about 3s when they were given so many 1s. Just like last year,
the stripes protected the big 10 and gave them the foul shots .

Great Win on National TV!
The CBS broadcasters were just waiting for our Vols to fall flat on their face and succumb to a so called “Big Time” program – Ohio State – but, GUESS WHAT – they didn’t!
When we got behind in the second half of the game they were saying to themselves and insinuating to the audience that here goes the same “old Tennessee program”, wilting under pressure and laying down when things get hot, but to Mr.Kellog and Eagle’s surprise, our Vols fought back and showed that this is a New Age of Tennessee basketball.
Coach Pearl will NOT ALLOW such attitudes or actions to happen with this program ANY MORE as they have in the past. Will we loose some games? Probably, but hopefully not.
What we WON’T do is be intimidated by ANY TEAM ANY MORE and as soon as the biased announcers and networks realize that the better off THEY will be. Our Vols are here to stay and to be reckoned with!
BRING ON KENTUCKY & MEMPHIS for some BUTT WUPPINS! GO VOLS!

Fulmer shouldn't have been wasting his time at the game and kissing Pearls ass. He'd best be hitting the road and try to save what's left of a pathetic recruiting year.
UTK just dropped a good game to UF. Bring on the cats.

Maybe we ALL should be kissing Coach Pearl's backside! Last time I LOOKED he has only lost 1 game this year and HIS reqruiting looks DAMN good!

Let me rephrase my last post.
"Maybe we should ALL be kissing Coach Pearl's backside! Everyone EXCEPT PAT SUMMITT! She don't kiss NOBODY'S ASS! She KICKS IT!

utvols1, kiss my ass, Mr. Insulting Negativity.

Still like to see the guys play better with the lead. some of the turnovers and shots were bad...and, yeah, you wonder about the no-foul calls on the dunk attempts. Lots and lots of contact.

Just beat Kentucky.

UK is going to be angry, and the crowd will be on fire. Look for Gillespie to pull some 'Pearl' tricks with the fans.

UK lost in overtime to Florida. I watched part of it: Crawford is still good, Bradley, and the newcomers are talented. They make mistakes (as do we), but the game is in Lexington....

Really a very big road game.

Maybe Fat Fill can learn something by watching Bruce work.

It's not a coincidence that everybody has a bad day shooting 3s against us. The best way to describe our defense is "relentless." Keeping a hand in their face 3 or 4 feet outside the 3-point line and switching off when they try to set up a screen can get on your nerves after a while and by the time they actually get an open shot they are too upset to take a good look. I think Coach Pearl's style of coaching can also be very distracting to the opponents' players on the floor. I notice that several times during the game the other guys steal a glance over at him with a frown on their face. Keep it up, Bruce!!! You're the man!!

Well, we have to go to KY sometime...might as well be now. They're still scary, despite their record. And the win over Vandy shows they still may have what it takes to get big wins at home.
Better to go to Lexington now, rather than later in the year when they get more used to Gillespie's system.
KILL THE CATS!
Plays of the game:
12. Childress' great feed through traffic for a Ramar layup.
11. Jujuan's steal and layup to increase the lead to 5 late in the first half.
10. Tyler's sweet spin move and left hand layup (and 1!)
9. Ramar's pass to Brian Williams to close out the first half with momentum (Williams showed great awareness because he was actually turning to crash the boards thinking that Ramar was going up for the shot).
8. Tyler's two free-throws to ice it.
7. All of Ramar's and JP's drives to the basket.
6. Pearl and Fulmer sharing a laugh and low five...I loved it.
5. Ramar's alley to JP for the reverse oop.
4. Brian Williams (again showing great awareness) touch pass to Tyler for the layup.
3. Jajuan hitting the three and then stealing the inbounds pass and completing the 5-point possession.
2. All of Chris's sweet threes.
And number one:
Jajuan infiltrating the OSU huddle :) priceless. Even after Matta pushed him away he got right back in the middle of them. Chiz wasn't far off, either.
Ya gotta love these guys.

Great win for a tired team against a quality opponent! OSU had at least one extra day's rest over us and we still played them off their feet. BTW, this is probably the best time to go to UK. They expended a LOT of energy in the overtime loss at Florida, and they don't have nearly the depth we have. In fact, our depth was the difference against OSU--again. If one took all our guys individually, most of them would be competing for starting time on almost any other team. But when they are all on the SAME TEAM, we have an advantage almost no one else can match. It is so good to be a Vol fan!

Hey Hacksaw57, Your right its going to be a butt whipping when you play Memphis. The vols will be whipped all the way back to that hole they call home!!!!!

Why is it that everytime we play Ohio State we are terrible at the free throw line?

Posted by marc_ash on January 20, 2008 at 6:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Alright lets sum this up:

* Matta said Saturday's effort was "one of their best of the season."
* UT held their last 2 opponents to 5-41 from 3 point range (2 schools that were top in their conference from behind the arc).
* Tennessee has 0 McDonalds All Americans on their roster.
* "Them and (North) Carolina are the two best teams we've played this year."

Translation- Tennessee is pretty good.

Here we go again, another kid that comes in here trying to get things stirred up. First it was 12times and his Alabama garbage. Then it was _heels (who eventually apologized for his stupid comments. Then it was The_vol (or hilary_vol as he's known in the hills) who makes predictions and cites "facts" yet still refuses to devulge who he is.

And now, there is volssux. I'm wondering, if you are the same person. From what I can recall volssux, Memphis didn't do too much "butt whipping" against the Vols last year now did they?

Posted by murrayvol on January 20, 2008 at 6:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tennessee is pretty good marc_ash. But anyone who thinks UK will roll over like a burrito in Lexington on Tuesday hasn't watched their last 3 games.

Posted by mparker on January 20, 2008 at 6:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

king30.
I didn't see that with JaJuan in the OSU huddle, but I didn't watch all the game tape. Is it on tape, or did you have to be there???

was he just mseeing around??

Posted by marc_ash on January 20, 2008 at 7:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

murrayvol, I take no opponent lightly and would never infer that UK was a cupcake. Of course UK won't roll over...this is the SEC. Maryland beat UNC so UK can easily beat UT.

I think this will be Chris Loftons coming out party this season. He still reel's from being snubbed by Kentucky and usually saves his best for the Kats.

I think the Vols will get it done in Lexington, but it will be another hard fought game for the Vols.

hey volsux or "clown" can you remember what happend last year in knoxville? what makes you think you can beat us this year? with that weak schedule you play?

Posted by bmaples on January 20, 2008 at 8:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

First of all -- let's not be bragging about beating Memphis. Last I looked, they were in everyone's Final Four predictions. And, pride goeth before a fall. It should be a great game, and it IS in Memphis.

As for the Cats -- Rupp will be rocking, and they actually feel pretty good about themselves right now, including the close loss to Florida. They're beginning to "get it" when it comes to Billy G's system, and if everyone is healthy, it could be a long night in Lexington. I think Tennessee should win -- but it's Tennessee <-> Kentucky, so anything can happen. Go Vols!

Posted by Volssux on January 20, 2008 at 9:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Its funny that all you clowns point to the strength pf schedule. I'll give you that UT's schedule is top 10 but unlike the BCS mess its how you finish and the laast time I checked UT has never finished ahead of Memphis in the Tourney and while its a 2nd tier tourney has UT ever won the NIT? I would like to see UT and Memphis continue to play both football and basketball I question if that can happen. UT doesn't care about playing Memphis in football and Memphis would rather play the Georgetown's, Arizona's and other "national programs" in order to raise more money for the school.

Posted by johnlg00 on January 21, 2008 at 12:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Volssux, you make me laugh! The strength of schedule and the #1 RPI everyone is talking about is for THIS season, while you are talking ancient history. Nothing about Vol b'ball pre-CBP is at all relevant. I won't even say that last year's beatdown in K'ville means anything--it was clear in that game that your Kitties just laid down and quit! If you think the Vols will lay down the same way in Memphis, you are really grasping at straws. Personally, I think UT-Memphis will be the biggest national game of the regular season, since it may well be #1 against #2. One further word of caution for you; if you lose a game in that cupcake conference you play in, you will drop out of the ratings so fast, it will make your head spin. Even if you don't, by the time you play UT, your guys will have forgotten what real competition is and will have developed too many bad game habits. The Vols could lose a game or two in the SEC and still be a top-10 team.

Posted by Volssux on January 21, 2008 at 10:04 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey johnlg00,I agree that the Tigers will fall if they lose that was my point. And again I agree that UT could lose 1-2 more games and still be Top 10. But the RPI is only considered in seeding so the rest of this is ajoke.

Oh by the way 2/23/08 The Kitties by 10.

:)

It was great watching the Vols get some revenge on the Buckeyes. Living in Ohio makes it tuff I they would of loss. I am getting very tired of the announcers ripping Tennessee (Football and Basketball) when they are on a major network. Just a few examples Vs Penn State(last yrs Outback) its Todd Blackledge this weekends game with OSU is Clark Kellog. The statement one of them made at the end of the game saying this game didnt make up for San Antione last year was uncalled for.
