ATHENS, Ga. — Two Georgia football players were suspended for the team’s season-opening game against Georgia Southern following their arrests on alcohol-related charges.
Defensive back Donavon Baldwin and fullback Fred Munzenmaier were booked into the Clarke County Jail early Sunday.
Both backup players were given a minimum one-game suspension. In addition to missing the Aug. 30 game against Georgia Southern, the two will be assigned community service and also will have internal discipline.
Baldwin, who will be a junior in 2008, was arrested by University of Georgia police for driving under the influence of alcohol and improper driving.
Munzenmaier, a sophomore, was arrested by Athens-Clarke County police for underage possession or consumption of alcohol and pedestrian walking on the road.
“They know better, and I’m disappointed in both of them,” coach Mark Richt said in a statement Sunday night. “They will have to pay a price, but it’s unfortunate the rest of the team will also have to suffer for their poor judgment.”
The Athens Banner-Herald reported Munzenmaier was arrested after he was seen on an Athens street waving his arms. According to the incident report, the officer slammed on his brakes to avoid running over him.
The officer asked Munzenmaier for his ID and noticed a strong smell of alcohol. Munzenmaier said he thought he was flagging down a taxi.
Munzenmaier told the officer it was obvious the police have it “out for them,” according to the report, and that police have a point system for athletes.
Munzenmaier later used an expletive to tell the officer to shut his mouth, according to the report.
Baldwin was arrested by University of Georgia police and was released at 5:59 a.m. on bonds totaling $2,000. Munzenmaier was released at 6:04 a.m. on $750 in bonds.
Munzenmaier played in 10 games and scored a rushing touchdown against Ole Miss. Baldwin did not record a tackle while playing on special teams in eight games.
Linebacker Akeem Hebron was suspended from the university for the fall semester after twice being arrested for underage possession in the spring.
Tight end Tripp Chandler and quarterback Blake Barnes were arrested on alcohol-related charges while walking on Lumpkin Street last June and drew one-game suspensions.
Also on Saturday night, former Georgia safety Terreal Bierria was arrested by Athens-Clarke police for DUI and speeding. Bierria, who is listed in the university’s student directory, was a fourth-round pick by Seattle in 2002. He was cut in 2005.

Ummmm...National Champions don't forget. At least that's what they think and they think they'll defend their self proclaimed National Championship in 2008. Drink til' you're merry guys! Whoo hoo! Solja boy it up! Thaty Geeorgia Southern game was so huge! What severe punishment!

Yawn. Excuse me Volcr, couldn't resist.
Unfortunately, serious as this is, it is everyday news across this land. Don't know the answer. Personal responsibility, I guess.

So how many points is a fullback worth?

Tip for the Georgia boys - Taxis don't have flashing blue lights on top.

dfreeman-How's your son? Everything ok?
I guess airforceone has up and r-u-n-n-o-f-t. Mark Richt would never allow that kind of stuff to go on? I guess Richt can't keep his eye on all of his players 24 hrs/day no more that any other coach.

He's not bonafide.

ctownvol - He's ok! Still running a low grade fever, but a far cry from 105.4!! He has RSV which caused pneumonia. The RSV also caused him to have an ear infection. He is finally accepting and holding down his liquids which should keep his temps in check!! They almost admitted him due to dehydration!! It took 400 units of IV fluid to get him to respond. Looking at my little boy's face sunk in and his lips cracked and blistered due to dehydration, I finally realized what my parents meant all of these years when they told me I made them age overnight!! This stuff is brutal!! I don't think they prepare you for this!

Good one iporange. He certainly is not bonafide. Much like Vernon T. Waldrip.

dfreeman, been through the rsv thing. Know what you are going through. Hang in there and best wishes, it does get better.

ctownvol, is that every Walgreens or just the one?
Glad to hear that it's getting better, dfreeman. Hope things continue to improve.

dfreeman- my prayers are with your son and the doctors treating him. My 4 yr old son had pneumonia over christmas holidays and still has ear infections - since
christmas, 4th round of antibiotics.
I know what you are going thru! take care and god bless!

Doesn't make it right but happens everywhere unfortunately. Thought it was a taxi cab?
Anyone watching the Pack and Giants? Giants kicker won't have a job after tonight if they lose!
I can't believe he just shanked that last kick. Yes it is cold but.... gotta make it!

Good one IP. Although, it was the Woolworth's. But a good one nonetheless. I'm out guys.

Anyone want to blame this on Fulmer? I'm sure in some convoluted fashion the haters on here will find a way...
Young adults will be irresponsible sometimes, so will old adults. THEY, not their coaches, make the decisions and they will ultimately have to answer to them.

Thanks vol1994 and my prayers with yours as well!! Yep, that kicker has to feel like lones seiber (spelling??) for kentucky doesn't he?? He may get his third chance now!! Favre just threw another pick!! I'd like to see Brett in another Super Bowl before he retires, but it's not looking good for them!!

You're so right, ctown. Delmar would be proud of you!

Well that kicker just redeemed himself!! Giants vs. New England.

good call dfreeman- kicker got a 3rd chance and made it count. I'm surprised the NY football Giants are going to the bowl. I despise the Pats but feel they are a team of destiny and will win by 20 or more points but only time will tell.

vol1994 - yeah kinda like the teams that had to face the 49ers and the Cowboys in the nineties.. NO CHANCE!!

You almost have to commit murder or be in prison to get more then a one game suspension from Richt. Richt runs the most Lax prgram in the SEC. The only way to get kcked off the team is usually to get kicked out of school.

dfreeman, any time you need to find ol' airforceone, he's back at home on forums.kentucky.com. He visits once in a while then goes back north with his passion. All are welcome.
Richt may have some players from the correspondence coupon classes, so I'm not sure about the losing them if they're not on campus.

Alright, enough is enough. These police have to go. There are plenty of other potheads and drunks out there to catch without picking on the players that sacrifice so much just to have a little fun on the weekends...and while we are at it, this nonsense of going to class has got to be addressed to.

Too bad they couldn't have been caught smoking pot....then they would have just had to miss the 1st 5 minutes or spring practice....oh, I'm sorry, that would be for one of Fulmer's players.....Fulmer just wishes his guys would stick to alcohol

Now you know why many teams, like GA and UF schedule lite early games. They can suspend players they expect to screw up and really not have a threat of losing a game. Missing GA Southern game? Two years ago UF had a player that tested positive for drugs for the 2nd time, 2 weeks prior to the UT game, but waited until after the UT game to suspend him.

Unlike UT which has 1st games against UAB (2008) and Western Kentucky (2009) as openers.....of course, Appy State showed that there's more to lose than to gain by playing these games.....but UT has a much easier schedule than UGA does for 2008 and 2009......unless Northern Illinois, Wyoming, Ohio, Memphis, UAB and Western Kentucky (not to be confused with Ohio State) happen to peak at the wrong time...and UCLA is a 0.500 team at best..upon further review, Ohio may be more likely to beat an SEC team than Ohio State

Looks like UAB was the 8th WORST team in the country in 2007.....and Northern Illinois made the list at #6. Coach Cut's Duke team made #4 (nowhere to go but up...)....nice to see Notre Dame on the list at #13 (but they still have a longer winning streak - 2 games - than the national champions)

fred:12:56 good post- I said previously if Cut can win 2-5 games a year, he can retire. Win 6 and upset N Carolina, he'd be govenor.
Notre Dame's recruiting is out the roof, though. Guess they know they can play, soon.

dfreeman, in reading the posts looks like your little on has RSV? Hang in there. My son had it also and was hospitalized for a week when he was one. Scared the @#$% out of me. Just be sure the DR. doesn't give your little one medication for something he doesn't have. I know the dr. tried to treat my son for asthma and he didn't have it....once you have an "official" diagnosis on his record, it stays with you and you can't get rid of it without killing someone. And, once insurance gets a hold of it, your premiums are ENORMOUS.
RSV seems to be more an more common. My little guy got Crupe with the RSV. Wasn't pretty. He also now is struggling with problems with his ears (tube surgery happened 2 weeks ago) and he continues to have problems with infections in his tonsills over the past few months.
Having a little one sick sucks. HOpe your son gets better soon!
