Hornbuckle to miss next game, will undergo diagnostic test

Tennessee will play without senior guard Alexis Hornbuckle for Thursday’s SEC women’s basketball game against Arkansas.

Hornbuckle will miss the game in order to have a diagnostic test. UT officials would not specify the nature of the test or the reasons for it, only saying that Hornbuckle would miss Thursday’s game as a result.

Jenny Moshak, the Lady Vols assistant athletic director for sports medicine, said Hornbuckle will be back for next Monday’s game at Duke.

Hornbuckle sat out last Tuesday’s practice with lower back pain. She spent the workout stretched out on the visitors’ bench with a heat pack on her back.

Two days later, she played 38 minutes against Kentucky. UT coach Pat Summitt called a timeout just to get Hornbuckle out of the game after UT’s 65-40 victory was secure.

Against Vanderbilt on Sunday, Hornbuckle played a team-high 32 minutes in the 79-63 victory, scoring 10 points, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Overall, Hornbuckle is second on the team in average minutes played at 30.5 per game. Point guard Shannon Bobbitt leads at 31.3. Hornbuckle’s 65 assists are second to Bobbitt’s 68. Hornbuckle averages 11.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

Hornbuckle likely will be replaced in the starting lineup by senior Alberta Auguste, who scored six points in 21 minutes against Vanderbilt.

This is a great article! All you can say is a diagnostic test. You cant even say on her knee, or head, wrist.. whatever. Genius

Be patient, utchris. This is one of those articles that are posted to let the fans know that a story is developing, and then details will be added before it is published in the newspaper the next day (or two). It just gives the on-line readers an early peek at the story. More will follow...

Here's hoping all is okay with Hornbuckle. We're thinking of you, Alexis! All the best!

jus speculating but most likely the back.
They are going to discuss this on the "UT locker room show" after the commercial in a few minutes so hopefully mark Packer will give more details.

vol1994 writes:

Mark Packer just stated on his tv show, UT locker room, that the UT sports director dept must announce any further details due to the privacy of the student athlete, which is why Vol quest does not have or cannot give any additional information.

Like the article stated, Packer said Hornbuckle will play against Duke.

They could have waited 30 more mins until they had all their ducks in a row before the posted this then. Basically the posted the bare minimum so that no one could say that another site beat them out. Their minimum info made it seem like it was more serious then it probably is. If Jenny says that she will be back by next Monday, then it is more than likely a non issue.

I agree Utchris2003- they should've waited but.....
everyone wants to be first in reporting the story.
I was surprised the asst coaches were not aware Hornbuckle would not play thurs against Arkansas until a caller called in and asked the same question you did.

Have some faith people, believe in our Lady Vols!!

In the Vanderbilt game, Hornbuckle grabbed her back after she saved the ball from going out of bounds and then threw the ball over her head to a UT player.

Hopefully this is something that a chiropractor or therapist can take care of. We definately need her presence down the road.

I hope she's okay.

utchris , they said she had heat pad on her back . Do you think that is also her knee?

utchris writes:

dwolfcreek,

The original article said nothing of the back problems or heat pack. That was edited later. It also says that was last Tuesday. The two could be unrelated. As an athletic trainer (with a Sports Med degree from UT nonetheless) I think I know the difference between the back and the knee.

And to Anthony.... none of the other post on the article have bashed the Lady Vols...I don't think that anyone has lost any faith

First and foremost let us hope that everything is going to be ok! This team rises and falls on Lex. She is the stability, emotion and driving force of the Lady Vols. We have great pieces of a National Championship puzzle but Lex is the glue that holds it all together.
