HomeFootball Recruiting

Pryor looks like next great QB

JEANNETTE, Pa. — Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, George Blanda and Jim Kelly earned Pittsburgh and its environs the nickname of the Cradle of Quarterbacks.

Next up? It may very well be Terrelle Pryor, whose high school career dwarfed those of all the stars that preceded him in one of the nation’s most competitive and closely watched football regions.

Pryor, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound bundle of talent, is the latest in a lengthy line of exceptional players from western Pennsylvania that also includes Tony Dorsett, LaVar Arrington and Bill Fralic.

“Not in my lifetime have I seen a player like Terrelle, and I’ve watched football for 40 years,” said Ray Reitz, his coach at Jeannette High School. “When you’re great, you’re great. He could compete at any level.”

Reitz, who saw Dorsett in high school, isn’t alone in tossing out such praise for the only player in Pennsylvania high school history to rush for more than 4,000 yards and throw for more than 4,000 in a career. He finished with 4,250 yards rushing and 4,249 passing.

Pryor has already won several national player of the year awards. He was the MVP of the nationally televised U.S. Army All-American Bowl game in San Antonio earlier this month. He is also the No. 1-rated player by nearly every major recruiting service.

Pryor is special for another reason, too: Only two weeks from NCAA Division I-A national letter of intent day, Pryor is uncommitted — making him the object of one of the most intense coast-to-coast recruiting competitions in recent years.

The reasons why are obvious.

Pryor’s size, speed, arm strength, acceleration and athleticism are uncommon for a quarterback so young. Watching him play high school football was much like watching LeBron James play Ohio high school basketball: He was so much better than those around him, it was like a man playing among boys.

This past season, Pryor had 3,788 yards of total offense, rushing for 1,899 yards and passing for 1,889 on a 16-0 team that scored a state-record 860 points, or 105 more than the previous record. Pryor ran for 33 touchdowns and threw for 23, averaging a touchdown every four times he touched the ball.

No wonder why college coach after college coach has told Pryor the same thing: Go to that coach’s school, and it automatically becomes a national title contender. He is looking at Michigan, Ohio State, LSU and Oregon, but schools frequently fall on and off the list.

“He’s a program changer. If you get him, you’re going to get a lot of other great athletes to follow,” Reitz said.

How good an athlete is Pryor? Despite having no preseason practice, he had 24 points, 11 rebounds, six dunks, four blocked shots and five steals in his first basketball game this season, only four days after his final football game.

While Pryor competed in the second smallest of Pennsylvania’s four classes, he has played basketball against players from those schools and dominated. Few recruiters who have watched him doubt he would have done the same thing in football.

Two major recruiting sites, Superprep.com and Rivals.com, list him No. 1 nationally and compare him to former Texas quarterback Vince Young for his ability to make as many plays with his legs as with his arm.

At a recent pep rally honoring Jeannette for being ranked No. 5 nationally by Maxpreps.com, Pryor was clearly tiring of the recruiting pressure.

Assistant coaches from Penn State and Ohio State were in the room, well aware that Pryor was traveling to Michigan for an official visit two days later. Before then, he had another basketball game to play and hundreds of text messages to plow through.

Despite the ban on coaches sending text messages, dozens of messages from recruiting services, fans, friends and outsiders who somehow obtain his number pile up on Pryor’s cell phone if he leaves it off for more than a few hours.

“It’s not overwhelming,” Pryor said of the intense recruiting. “I was forewarned about it, but I wasn’t prepared for it — I haven’t been through it before, so I couldn’t be prepared.”

Juggling an all-state basketball career — he is closing in on 2,000 points for his career — and recruiting trips is also proving difficult.

“It is tiring,” Pryor said. “I’m just trying to get it over with and move on. Of course, you’re looking at all the top colleges in the country, so it’s going to be hard.”

Reitz offers another reason for Pryor’s indecision: his difficulty in saying no. Pryor is inherently shy, his coach said, and is aware he will disappoint many coaches with his final decision.

“All this attention is embarrassing to him because he is such a good kid,” Reitz said.

Pryor may be the most recruited player in western Pennsylvania since Washington High running back Brian Davis, a national high school player of the year in the mid 1980s. Davis’ career at Pitt ended quickly because of academic problems, and he never played college football again.

No one who knows Pryor expects that to happen to him.

Pryor has a 3.4 grade-point average, goes to class and is being mentored by Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch, who met him through a relative and is helping guide him through the recruiting process.

Pryor’s parents split up years ago and neither currently lives in Jeannette, which is 25 miles east of Pittsburgh. Pryor has lived with his godfather throughout high school, yet has managed to stay grounded and focused with his life, school work and his athletic career.

“I don’t think everybody will know where he’s going for sure until signing day (Feb. 6),” said Batch, who went to Eastern Michigan and thus has no personal stake in where Pryor winds up.

Pryor is one player that doesn’t need one of those prerequisite highlight DVDs to show off to his recruiters.

Every game provided highlights, from the 53-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the season, during a 60-0 victory against Brownsville in which he was never tackled, to his final carry, a 41-yard TD run that put the Jayhawks up 49-7 against Dunmore in the state title game.

No wonder there are dozens of Pryor “rookie cards” already selling on eBay, even though he is not yet in college. By the end of the season, strangers lugging bags of footballs began showing up at Jeannette’s practices, seeking autographs they planned to sell.

“It’s crazy, and it’s getting crazier,” Reitz said. “But I understand why. I’ve never seen anyone as good as him, and a lot of other people have told me they haven’t, either.”

Tennessee football is changing and is being refined. The future is changing and not necessarily out of our favor. The focus is not on us and we are clearly coming in way under the radar. Like the 60's, we will compete and excel. Will we have All-Americans? Yes!! Will we get good kids? Of course. It's time for us to get our priorities in order and let others make mistakes. We have had our heyday with Peyton Manning and 15 years of competing for #1. What will it take to get players of this caliber?? And when will it come to pass? What are our roles as fans and followers of UT football?? We have a great fan base, united we are almost unstoppable. Always believe for the best and prepare for the worse. Speak highly of your coaches, players, and fans. Don't gloat over the faults of others or at their defeats. Give your neighbor a hand when he is down. Go Vols. Never be afraid to become a Volunteer , you will never be ashamed or dissappointed to wear the Big Orange uniform.

anthony...nicely written!

I will say this. Good teams can and often beat great players. Regardless, I wish Pryor all the best.

Forever a VOL!

I know he has crossed us off but I wonder if Coach Clawson has given him a ring. Heck, all the UT staff should pick up about 20 pounds of BBQ from Corkys and 5 gallons of ice tea from my grandma's and head up there to work it.

Just a feeler of what ifs: What would you have traded?

Keep Cutcliffe, get Pryor.

Get Clawson, lose Pryor.

This will be a fun question to look at in three or four years.

He wants to play basketball too. LSU, Mich, OSU, and Oregon have DECENT teams, but not great. I say you fly our whole staff up Mike Hamilton, Pat Summitt, the whole football and basketball staff. Not to sell football or to sell basketball but to sell TENNESSEE! Show this kid a vol fans love for the family. Show him some tape from the UK bball game at home last year and the UGA fb game this year. Those games I just felt like lossing wasnt even a possibility with all the family in house to watch it all happen. This kid could seriously be an All American in Football and Basketball here (and probably wherever he goes). Man that would be sweet to get him. Seems like a good kid.

Watch him shock the world on signing day and go to Duke to play basketball and get coached up by Cut (it seems he had some real respect for him). I tell you though, watch out for a sleeper in this process...UCLA. They have a tremendous basketball team and now with Norm Chow being there, he has coached Ty Detmer, Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Vince Young....not too bad of a resume himself. If he does, thatll make this opening game even tougher.

Wow I really did not plan to type this much. Sorry, GO VOLS!!!!!!!!

I remember a lot of hype about a young quarterback named Simms. Remember him? It was the end of the world because he decommitted from UT and went to that other UT. Maybe he wil be the next great QB maybe he won't. I just wonder if he has a girlfriend and if Meyer can get her a scholarship too??

we were never close to pryor. we were a "school of interest" but not one of his top choices. cutcliff, clawson, jesus, nobody could have helped get him here.

Fulmer went to his last regular season game, and that may have been the last attempt at Pryor, although I do not know that for sure. I personally feel that this young man wants to help the Big Ten shake the SEC monkey off its back. Here in Columbus, ABC has run a segment, hosted by sports guy Anthony Hall, every night this week during the news talking about how Pryor is likely to come to OSU...they want him in the very worst way. We'll see, won't we?

Posted by Basketball_Jones on January 25, 2008 at 7:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Someon mentioned Simms being so talented but being a bust. I also remember a guy named Manning, Vince Young, Matt Leinart, and so on and so forth. I've seen videos on this kid and he can play. As far as Simms goes, he spurned UT but was pretty good at Texas, he just couldn't beat Oklahoma kinda like Peyton couldn't beat Florida and he's liked pretty well around the East Tennessee area.

This kid came out publicly and said how much he liked Cutcliff and even went to Duke to see him and get advice. Saying Tennessee was not in the running is dumb. Cut would have thrown it all out there for him, cause players like this can change a game and a team. Just ask Oregon and Dennis Dixon, they would been #1 and playing OSU for it all until he went down. Good luck TP, go to Oregon or UM, not LSU or OSU they're already good enough

If only we had mark richt we could get Pryor here and, while here, coach richt would reunite his parents. Coach Richt would make all the right moves....candle light dinner near the vol navy, a walk in tyson park(then known as Terrelle Pryor park), their names in stadium scoreboard. All would be well. The only person more popular than a second string quarterback is a high school quarterback.

Nice article, but what's the purpose in GoVols Extra? Is this for daydreaming about a miracle? This kid all of a sudden drops his top teams and opts for UT? I don't think so. This is a rebuilding year for the offensive coaching staff. It will take some time, and more importantly lots of wins, to get consideration from such players in the future. As far as some of the comments, don't discount this kid's talent yet. You don't know if he will turn out to be a "Simms." Chances are much greater that a highly recruited player turns out to be a good or great player than an average player turning out to be great.

Posted by rkastens on January 25, 2008 at 9:09 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm sure this kid is a great player. Peyton was great too, but we won our NC with a guy named Tee Martin under center. That doesn't mean you tell a guy like Pryor "No thanks!" I'd love to see him at Tennessee. But it still takes 22+ guys to play together to win. If a miracle happens and he signs with the Vols we'll all celebrate. But the sky will not fall if he signs somewhere else.

"Pryor looks like next great QB".......to diss old UT.

Posted by nikesportsfan on January 25, 2008 at 9:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I've been hearing that he is overrated as a QB and he will likely never play that position in college. Supposedly he is erratic at best when it comes to passing. If he never puts it together he would be a WR (which Florida is recruiting him for) or a DE (other schools are looking at this possibility too). Often prospects this high with many question marks will fail at some point. It's a two sided question really. Do you want him to fail and have a chance to make in your uniform or another. Honestly right now I would rather him go to another program. If he does make it, hindsight is 20/20. Otherwise it will look like a good move.

Posted by mparker on January 25, 2008 at 9:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

doesn't make a damn. all the press focuses (and gets fans focused) on the skill players.

the key to stud football is the offensive line and the defensive line.

Look at teams that win a NC with a 'serviceable' QB: UT (Martin), Florida (Leak), LSU (Flynn), Alabama (Barker). Sure, a great QB can get you some games, but a QB who doesn't make critical mistakes can win you games, too.

I'm not worried about the Prior's up in that stratified air. At least we're moving in recruiting, from 42nd to 54th according to Scout.

Some people diss Scout and Rivals, saying so what! I however watch things like Vols with 8 #3 stars (who some say are best) and South Caro with 13. Kansa St has 17. Phil's late great push will be spectacular rising up to # 48 or so. The Ides of March are about to ease into the orange doldrums if something doesn't change and fast.

Don't forget these cold facts. Facts. Listen carefully --68th in RUN DEFENSE --84th in PASS DEFENSE and all we talk about is QBs. Hello! Realism.

Pls say d-linemen or, guess what...........

What does the article have to do with UT? This sounds like it was cut and pasted from ESPN.com. Ok. He's a "great" player. Is he coming to Knoxville? Doesn't sound like he's even considered it. So once again....what does this article have to do with UT?

Posted by andy112382 on January 25, 2008 at 9:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

If schools are not 100% sure how he will last as a QB and he might be better at WR, etc.....Clawsons track record would seem to be a great thing to Pryor. Remember, one of Clawsons strengths and key ingredients to his success as a coach has been playing to his strengths and molding his offenses to bring out the best from the talent he has to work with....SO you would think that would translate into getting Pryor into the mix any way possible, rather it be as a QB, WR, etc......just a thought...

Posted by wkb12 on January 25, 2008 at 9:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)

We were ABSOLUTELY close to getting him! He said he was gonna make a trip to Duke just to talk football with coach Cut. I mean it doesen't really matter now but, if it makes you feel better to say that we weren't close to getting him, then go right ahead.

Tennessee wasn't remotely considered by Pryor...was he? You must know something we don't...

Posted by jobrando on January 25, 2008 at 9:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

This is an article for rivals, scout, or espn. Sounds like the writer is just try to rub it in since Pryor had UT on his list prior to CUT leavin. If this years recruiting is a bust and UT has a bad year losing to FLA, ALABAMA or Georgia and the new OC does not put lots of points on the board.. Coach is gone, gone gone.

Posted by cookevol on January 25, 2008 at 10:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Don't forget about Ronald Curry. He was the next great everything. Very similar, if I remember correctly, to the status of Pryor. He went to UNC and never lived up to the potential but I think he was a 3rd down receiver for the Raiders for many years. He was a great football and basketball player in Virgina I believe.

5* great athlete's are hit and miss. Adrian Peterson - hit and lived up to the hype. Tim Tebow same.

Said all that to say - who knows?

This was an AP article placed on the site because, if anything is happening in our recruiting, it's known only to the coaches and staff, not the KNS writers/editors. We've not slipped from 42 to 54, it's just that some of the schools below us initially, which recently have passed us, have had more players commit to their programs. Personally, I'd rather keep the scholarships open than sign some of the slugs whose videos I watched yesterday, rather than reading the non UT material posted on this site. Phil and staff may yet finish with some surprises. I'd sign the Dareus brothers, without even seeing a video of 'the other brother.' Marcel is a beast! He rag-dolled the QB on the first play, and ran down a screen pass from his DT position 20 yeards down the field. His brother plays DE, but we could really use this kind of player at DT. Go Vols! This kid will milk all the recruiting process till the last minute. Question is with our facilities, who wouldn't want to come here? Charlie Batch as a mentor? Hold the clip board like this, sorry coach let me get out of your way, I was trying to get the play in for ya...Please.

Forgot to add that John Blake at North Carolina apparently is recruiting the Dareus brothers successfully. At least they won't wind up in the SEC. Some of the prospects virtually never made a play, and seemed to just fall on the pile. I saw very few LBs and DL that really laid a hit on the offensive back. Looks like the Douglas kid from Maryville can both catch it over the middle, and go deep. SAVol

Recruiting rankings are a joke anyway. You never know how a kid will make the transition from HS to college. Point is, I think Fulmer handled to coaching hires very well and hired guys that can actually COACH so that it does not matter if we sign 5-7 5* guys to more or less "manage" but rather grab 10-15 3* kids who are not full of themself and coach them to winners. We will see how it all unfolds very soon

For understandable reasons, it looks like UT will have more scholarships than top SEC caliber recruits to accept UT offers.

Nice article Anthony. I too think it's time to get back to some positive thinking and talking. If he comes to Tn good for us and him, if not I just hope it's not Lsu or Ala, and yes not Ga. This kid might break all the records in college and then again he might blow a knee on the first play. I have seen us get great recruites, but if we cannot keep them helthy it don't help a thing. We had a great recruiting class that are going to be seniors next season, so we should have a good year. All said, let's just stay positive and quit the back stabbing of the coaching staff. You never know when one of us might influence one of the recruits to go the other way.

Tennessee is in the national, regional, and local fish bowl too much to make offers that could compete for such a recruit as Pryor. The VOLS have to meet many more standards than any other school in the whole country. Like a politician said, "If you want to learn abiut your ancestors, run for public office." VOLS' recruits face the same situation. If anyone ever comes to Tennessee, he is forever after a VOL and irrespective of anything that may ever happen to him afterward, the public is reminded of the fact. The local media takes great pleasure in ferreting out any activity that could bring disrespect to the university and its athletes.

He was considering UT until DC left. His relationship was more with him than with the team. Unlikely they would have gotten him either way, but at least they were in the running. Like I said before, it could be a blessing missing out on him if he fails. I highly doubt he becomes the Vince Young some think. He has NOWHERE near the accuracy that Young had coming out of high school.

pdhuff, I find it totally unbelievable that you (and others)would not be completely enamored with an article about a QB who: 1)likely wouldn't start next season 2)has no interest in playing for the Vols and 3)doesn't look to fit the style of offense the Vols have traditionally played.

No need to fret over defensive linemen, I am sure the Vols will find some that they can snatch from the likes of Kentucky, MTSU, Ole Miss and TN Tech. Besides, the defensive woes of the past couple of years is simply an enigma wrapped inside a fritter. It has nothing to do with not having a Mahelona, Henderson, Haynesworth, or even a Duff in the lineup.

invisiblekid 11:09 1-25-08 - Agree. We will stay the course. I need to hush about defense. Psshaw, apparently not needed. Do you really think we could out-recruit Ky and Tn Tech for DL? That gives me hope.

Buchanan at Rivals thinks since we only lose 4 of our top 6 tacklers (not needed) that we will stay the course. Why we had just as good a chance of getting Prior as, errr, uh, as Rice.

Maybe beloved coach can take the Summitt approach and tell U. Meyer that if he even considers 59 points again, why we'll schedule LaMonroe instead. May have to rethink that......Go Vols.

Should have some freakin leverage, we were #2 in the hardest conference on the planet earth!!!!!!!! You'd think there'd be some folks interested in becoming a part of this bright future, especially D's since we have IMMEDIATE NEED on defense----more chances to play early, development, etc.. Not to mention the amazing environment and facilities. Oh well, I guess we just haven't been paying the right folks off this year or something....

Not to mention that the team we finished second behind in our conference went on to win the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!! I really thought that recruiting would pick up after our bowl finish. I guess that goodwill was probably p***ed away due to our coaching shake up.
