Marjorie Orr Spurrier, the mother of South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier, has died. She was 86.
Spurrier died of natural causes Thursday in the northeast Florida town of Green Cove Springs, according to a statement from the funeral home.
She was a founding member of Pinewood Presbyterian Church in nearby Middleburg and used to serve as choir director and pianist, according to her family.
Steve Spurrier was widely credited for revolutionizing the Southeastern Conference with his innovative, wide-open passing attack and led the Florida Gators to their first national title in 1996. As a player there in his college years, Steve Spurrier won Florida's first Heisman Trophy in 1966, returned as coach in 1990 and won 122 games in 12 seasons. He then became head coach of the NFL's Washington Redskins and moved to South Carolina in 2005.
Spurrier was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Graham Spurrier. Her survivors include three grown children.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at Pinewood Presbyterian Church.

You're right. It's more than tacky. It's totally uncalled for.

VolinLSU: that comment is despicable. Look at yourself in the mirror and grow up. You should be banned from this website for making comments like that.
Coach Spurrier, you're in my prayers.

God bless your Mom's soul Coach. Does anyone out there remember if UT recruited Spurrier in the early 60's?
Posted by volwalker on January 26, 2008 at 12:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I believe UT recruited him but, he wasn't interested in UT because they were still playing the single wing offense. He was an outstanding athlete at Science Hill High School, in Johnson City, TN. All-State in 3 sports: Basketball, Baseball, and of course, Football.
Our prayers are with you and your family Steve!

vol_in_lsu Your post was the most disrespectful one I have ever read. Do you not have any shame? You bring shame on the Vol Nation by indicating you are a fan. This was totally uncalled for. I apologise to the Spurrior family that we have such a low class so called fan in our mist. Shame, shame, shame.

vol in lsu, you are pitiful. respect for the dead is something you evidently weren't taught or didn't learn. you need to repent, and i too think you should be banned from this sight. you are a real class act.

Believe me, I am no Spurier fan, but nobody should be subjected to comments like that. Sorry for your loss ol' ball coach.

I don't know why this article is necessary, but I do pray for the families comfort. I'm sure she lived a fullfilled life with all the success she was able to see her son have.

I think that the article is necesary. S.O.S is a native Tennessee boy. Granted he was and is a rival of UT but all that doesn't matter at this point. God extend your comfort to this family.
I don't know what the bad comment was but things like that are uncalled for. Steve is a decent guy..competitive as heck but a decent guy. Any bad comments regarding a death of a loved one are in poor taste.

Vol_in_LSU: Bad boy. but we've probably all engaged our nimble little fingers before engaging our cerebrum. Sometimes attemts at humor are spur of the moment and cold. I say give the man another chance.

Agree TJ.vol_in_lsu_land meant no harm.I know he didn't expect to get lynched over his joke.

I don't agree. I assume the the KNS staff doesn't either since the comment was removed. I doubt if the dude's banned from the site, but he should try TO engage his brain before exercising his fingers.

gratefully, i missed the comment that was deleted, but from the responses, i get the picture.
its a sobering thought that all of us need to keep in mind. there are those without feeling, honor, or just plain common sense. unfortunately, the internet gives them a platform.
my regret is that someone like that could associate himself with the University of Tennessee.
