Summitt has warning for 'Crazies'

Lady Vols could cancel series with Duke if fans taunt Hornbuckle

Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt hopes that Duke’s “Cameron Crazies” waving plastic shopping bags and chanting “Wal-Mart” at Lady Vols guard Alexis Hornbuckle are things of the past.

If not, then the series between the two schools might be.

Second-ranked Tennessee (17-1) and No. 10 Duke (15-4) play at 7 p.m. Monday (TV: ESPN2) at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.

“I wouldn’t be in favor of continuing the series if we’re going to go in a gym and they’re going to take personal shots at one of our players,’’ Summitt said.

On UT’s last visit, the Crazies, Duke’s famous student section, used the shopping-bag props to torment Hornbuckle for being arrested as a high school senior on a misdemeanor shoplifting charge at a Wal-Mart in West Virginia.

Hornbuckle, who is expected to play Monday after missing Thursday’s 98-55 victory over Arkansas because of a diagnostic test, said that she isn’t worried about the situation. This visit couldn’t be any worse than the first, when she committed six turnovers and shot 0-for-4 from the foul line, when the “Wal-Mart” chants rang the loudest in her ears.

“It’s nothing,’’ the senior said this week. “It’s something I laugh at now. I mean think about it. It’s something I did when I was 18 years old. I’m 22. That was back in the day.”

Summitt has a different attitude and already has discussed her stance with the Lady Vols athletic administration.

“Even if she’s not going to be there,’’ said Summitt, anticipating future games after Hornbuckle’s departure, “why would you subject a student-athlete to that type of harassment?’’

The contract between the two schools is thought to include a visit by Duke to Knoxville next season before expiring.

Duke announced Friday that Monday’s game is sold out. Tennessee’s two previous visits drew sellouts as well.

“This series has been a great series,’’ Summitt said, “but I was very disappointed the last time I was there with the behavior, in particular of the students toward Alexis. They stepped way over the line on that one.

“Hopefully we’ve moved on.”

Recruiting Rankings: Tennessee had four signees and Connecticut three among Rise magazine’s top 20 high school girls basketball recruits.

UConn signee Elena Delle Donne was ranked No. 1 with UT signee Glory Johnson of Webb School ranked No. 2.

The Lady Vols and Huskies each had two more signees ranked in the top 10. Future Lady Vols Shekinna Stricklen and Amber Gray were ranked sixth and eighth, respectively. Huskies signees Caroline Doty and Tiffany Hayes were ninth and 10th.

The other UT signee recognized was Alyssia Brewer at No. 18.

Three LSU signees — Ayana Dunning, Destini Hughes and LaShondra Barrett — were ranked 12th, 15th and 16th, respectively.

WBCA Awards: Tennessee had a strong presence in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s 2008 superlative awards for Divisions I and II.

Tennessee was recognized for best tradition, best community support and as the best host school. Summitt was named most competitive coach. She and associate head coach Holly Warlick were named best coaching combo.

UT’s pep band also snared a top honor.

Oh me Pat S. You're a smart successful woman. But you're playing with fire trying to dictate to the Cameron Crazies. I'm aferd you wo'nt win this one with the looneys.

They'll rise to this bait.

I agree, but this should motivate the Lady Vols even more, and look for Alexis to have a good game. Tauting a player is wrong, but I am not worried about that; I think the girls will be fine. The LADIES should out and respect their school and win the game with no problems. GO VOLS!!!!

The problem with the Cameron idiots is that they've become a caricature of themselves. A decade ago, they were incredibly clever and more often than not, pretty darn funny. Now, not only do they think they're more the "show" than the actual game on the floor, clever has been replaced with sophomoric, at best.

While I agree with pdhuff, I suspect Pat knows she can't dictate to them as well. What I believe she's doing is making a very simple statement. In essence, 'This may be your m.o. with other teams, to try and humiliate a particular player. And if you do that with one of ours, so be it . . . knock yourselves out . . . but we won't be back." It's similar to what Coach Pearl did with Dane Bradshaw at LSU last year, when the LSU students were downright vile to Bradshaw. Pearl went right up to Dane as he approached the scorer's table coming back into the game and raised his hand to the crowd like a referee in a fight. Pearl was standing up for his player and didn't give a hoot what LSU or their coach thought. It was a great statement by Bruce. Pat may well be doing the same thing.

Regardless, I'm sick of Duke's fans. I'd like nothing better than to see Pat and the LV's stick it to them.

I hope Pat has the moxie to remove the team from the floor should the situation devolve to the level of the loonies. Then let Duke handle their own.
I also hope Pat has drafted a couple or three Lady Vols Soccer Team members to butt check those
that Duke will use to try to beat down the LadyVols
players.

If Duke's coach tells the Crazies to lay off, they will. Temple came and played Duke's men the year John Chaney nearly went ballistic on John Calipari, and coach K asked them to not make light of the incident. They did as he asked. Pat is doing the right thing. If Duke can't or won't police their fans to refrain from personal attacks, then we don't need to have Duke on the schedule. There are plenty of other good teams that would love to take their place, I'm certain.

If you don't want an answer, don't ask the question....Coach S is nothing but class and was probably asked what she thought about the incident. I think she nailed it and sometimes the truth can be painful. She will do what she says. Just ask big Gino...It really makes me nuts to hear--THAT'S THE WAY THOSE CRAZIES ARE--and make their behavior NORMAL.?

Pat, come on! Fame is a double-edged sword. The Duke fans dish stuff out like this to the men opponents every game. Are the women not "man" enough to handle the barbs? You can't go around cancelling serieses against every team that upsets you in some way. This is ridiculous!

>>>She will do what she says. Just ask big Gino...

If Pat cancels the contract with Duke...and she won't play UConn anymore for reasons which she won't say... bang goes her RPI and SOS...

The way to shut up Duke's fans is to beat them on their floor, not run away and say "they're to mean."

More to the point - Pat should have contacted McCallie privately and asked her to talk to the Cameron Crazies, instead of making it a "fait accompli." I doubt if McCallie appreciated that.

Are you kidding me? This is just sad. If you and your team aren't mentally tough enough to withstand "taunting" at opposing venues, then please, don't play us. We wouldn't want to hurt your feelings. In fact, I think you should cancel every game against competitive teams like Duke and UConn. That way no one will have to worry about the psychic trauma inflicted upon your players. And if you think the Wal-mart stunt was harsh, you should see what Duke teams face on the road every game (see: Maryland, UNC, or V-Tech just last night.) You have an awesome program. Pat is undeniably the best in her business, but maybe it's time to grow some thicker skin. PS: Athletes benefit a great deal from being in the public eye. I think we can all agree that with those benefits comes some responsibility. If you don't want to get taunted, don't shoplift.

TropicalFish, I couldn't agree more. It sounds like Pat is trying to fire up the Duke crowd. They will be brutal. Just beat them, that's the way to shut them up. Don't run from them.

Duke212, I don't think you have to concern yourself with the toughness of the Lady Vols, just visit their trophy room some time. 7 national championships, and how many for Duke?

The Cameron Crazies are nothing more than a group of morons huddled closely together chanting stupid things and being loud for no reason. The best of the ones that are in this student section are the scumbags on the lacrosse team (which we all know what they done)..if that says anything about all of the others in the section. lol But ok..enough bashing the morons.. I hope our ladies embarrass Duke. It would be nice to see Pearl and the guys play the Great Coach K...a beat down he would receive from us might make ol coach K wish he would have took the job in LA a few years back. haha

I have to think about this one a while. First Uconn, now Duke??

Duke212, I don't know, I'm really surprised. More later.

How do we know that she hasn't already talked to McCallie? Is it possible that McCallie gave it a neutral reception that hinted at inaction on her part?

As for the Lady Vols' SOS, fughhedaboudit. I believe that more coaches agree with Pat than disagree. Being the leader that she is, if others follow her lead, then who's SOS drops, UT or Duke? Furthermore, as a women's program trying to climb up the hill, who would you rather play, Duke or UT? Duke may be good, but they're small taters compared to the dynasty that is UT Lady Vol Basketball under Pat Summitt.

No, this kind of taunting is NOT "just part of it". It's a game, and people have a responsbility to know when and where the line is that you draw, and what is acceptable. You would think people going to Duke would have enough class to know when it's inappropriate - but Duke has shown me wrong before when I expected a certain level of class. Duke212, you need to grow up. Who's paying for your education - I suspect if you were, you'd understand that life is about hard, hard work and hard tough lessons, and the crap you and your associates are bringing demonstrates you haven't paid your dues - because you don't get it. Do you understand that people are dying for your country right now? And you abuse your freedoms by heckling people from backgrounds probably not as priveleged as yours. Sorry, cheering, chanting, making noise is one thing, but ripping someone personally is another ball game. - it's low rent. It shows me that in life, you don't get it, and your parents probably didn't get it either. MemphisVol - NO, I don't expect the same from Tennessee - EVER.

Pat is a great coach but she needs to grow up on this one. First it's UConn and now Duke? Rediculous.......students will be students and if the UT students did something similar, it doesn't necesarilly mean the coach or the school endorses the behavior. Time for Pat to be the bigger man or woman in this case and just play the game as all she is doing is making the problem worse by mentioning it to the media. It's probably going to happen anyway.

I'm pretty sure when Naismith created this game we call basketball, he did not imagine it to be a realm of eager taunting and nasty comments toward the opponent. That's the whole point Pat is making I do believe. There is a respect, sportsmanlike conduct, and general love for the game that should be at all venues, not this ill will crap that the Cameron Crazies are spouting.

Taunting poor play, poor free throw shooting, an airball, too many turnovers to count...that's one thing...but getting into someone's personal life and using it as a malcontent device, that's uncalled for and rude...and that's the point.

most student bodies who give a hoot act up some, but only Duke and Vandy consistently and persistently taunt and ridicule to that degree. It has occurred for decades. Pampered elitists with a strong sense of entitlement-sometimes leads to ugly moments. Since I went to UT ('82) and Wake ('86), I have witnessed many examples, and had several other Duke accounts shared with me by my NC St, Wake, and Carolina friends of worse behavior by the Dukies.

Just a couple of thoughts: the Crazies' taunting of Alexis two years went beyond simple taunting. It was ridiculous--a singular attack on one athlete, who had done nothing to Duke to fuel the fire. The behavior was trashy, pure and simply trashy, so I guess that made it elitist trash.

FYI, our SOS is unlikely to suffer if it becomes necessary to remove Duke from the schedule. We continually schedule a rigorous schedule year-in and year-out. Duke is most likely headed on a downward trend, I don't see them competing at the level they have been in the past. Goestenkors had the best chance at a NC two years ago, but simply couldn't get it done.

First UConn; now Duke? C'mon, Coach Summitt - - pretty soon, the only teams the LV will be playing will be girls' catholic high school programs! Get over it, already. Taunting is part of the game, especially with the Cameron Crazies. Those kids aren't even smart enough to be wait-persons at local restaurants, so don't let them get under your skin! At least, if she does cancel with Duke, they will know why (unlike UConn).

Just play the game and don't worry about the fans. They only demean themselves and their university. Learn from it, it will make you stronger. As someone who has been through boot camp at Parris Island and Marine infantry training at Camp Lejeune, I have had my feelings hurt (to put it extremely mildly) a few times, but I am stronger because of it. Duke, bring it on. GO VOLS!

Let Pat alone. She was voted one of the 100 most influencial people in the world or something like that. How many of us are in the top 100,000,000? She knows what she is doing. If 17-18 year olds who made mistakes were singled out most of us could make that list. Lex has shown growth that many of us posters lacked at 22 or even 32.....

I agree with Pat. Get back to basketball and leave the personal stuff alone. If they come after Alexis on a personal level, just break it off after this series. Those kids at Duke go too far anyway. We do not need them.
PENDAV-- When it all comes out about UConn and UT, I believe you will find out Pat was right. Pat is too smart to handle something this way without lots of thought.
Duke has a ten point advantage from the start because of a bunch of kids that never see a basketball court except for the sidelines. They go beyond what they should.

Hey Uconn!

Geno only steels basketball recruits! Since you claim Pat is not a GREAT coach--that means someone out there has more national championships and more victories than she does. She has played in every NCAA tournament and never lost before the round of 16....lets see...Geno?

While Coach Summitt is to be admired for sticking up for her players I do think she's getting a little whiny in her old age.

As long as the opposing fans are not being profane and not throwing things from the stands you've got to be tough enough to take it. While I would prefer that fans wouldn't be so bourish, and would just concentrate on cheering on their own team, that's kind of par for the course these days. UT fans don't exactly treat all of their opponents with the utmost respect either.

In acutuality she's missing a great teaching point for the young people she's coaching. That being, that Hornbuckle made a stupid mistake four years ago and there sometimes are consequences to studid mistakes ... in this case having it thrown back in your face by the opposing team's fans.

Congratulations buddy. I should make you a certificate to hang on your wall. You should draw disability for the rest of your life and get to park in the Blue spots in parking lots. :D For you to even hint that Geno is a better coach because of how many players he has in the WNBA???? Wow! Thats stupid. That would mean Pat has done MORE with LESS talent??? Yes...thats what that would mean. Go post on UConn's boards and quit wasting space on our boards.

Sidenote, first of all -- I wish some posters would learn to spell.

Second -- the Duke lacrosse players were found innocent, and the prosecutor is going to jail. However we feel about this story, or about the advisability of bringing strippers to parties, we need to let the lacrosse thing go. Otherwise, we're being just as trashy, or worse, than what the Crazies are accused of.

Finally -- I think Pat ought to let this one go. Do I think the WalMart crap is "okay"? No, I don't ... but talking about it just draws attention to it. First you beat them on the floor, then the player simply points to the scoreboard as she walks off the court. And Pat doesn't bring it up in the post-conference; but if she's asked, she simply says, calmly, "I thought it was classless, and unbefitting a great school like Duke. Next question."

Cancel the series over it? That's an overreaction. They're not physically threatening your players, or throwing things. Just ignore it and focus on the game.

And, by the way, this is NOT the same as the UConn series. That was cancelled, supposedly, because of something Gino did in recruiting that Pat thought was over the line.

UConnFan, you have every right to gloat; your NCs have come mostly at our expense, so until we change that, you have gloating privileges. Don't wear it out, though; karma's a bitch.

What has happened to Coach Summit this year? Is the competition getting tougher, or is she just getting older and time to step down? UCONN is pulled from the schedule after they recruited Miya Moore, complaining to SEC officials and everyone else Parker is getting fouled to much, and now the threat of pulling Duke from the schedule. By going public and making statements about the Crazies this just escalated the situation. How did UT fans act when they played Ohio State? Coach Summit needs to focus and use her energy on the things she can control, 40s minutes of the game. Being so competitive and the drive to win at all times no matter what the cost, can cause one to lose focus of the big picture. Where did the old Pat Summit go, I miss her? Go Lady Vols!!!!!!!!!!!

What do you think about all the NBA players with tatoos are they so-call "thugish" . We all know Don Imus did not just say they are a "rugged team" he said something else that I refuse to say about a group of women who played their butts off last season. I'm all for Pat but come on. Are we trying to teach our youth that once the going gets tough, whine and comlain because somebody might get their feelings hurt?

This is the problem with the supposed "equality" in America today. Everyone screams they want to be equal, but thats a bold face lie. Most often, when folks say they want equality they want to be treated different. I'm sick of it. If women, men, whites, blacks, democrats, republicans, ETC want true equality.....then shut up and live life and stop complaining.

Sorry Pat, you got this one wrong.

ATLVOLFAN, What Don Imus said was offensive, but it wasn't racist. Racism comes with intent, and to my knowledge he wasn't intending to be racist. He appeared to me (as you continue to read the transcript) that he was referring to the girls "masculinity" as he referred to them as "the Toronto Raptors"....hardly a racist comment (sexist at best)

What is interesting is that Spike Lee made similer comments towards famous white players in the past, but he wasn't covered in the media. Calling Larry Bird "The ugliest white man in the NBA" and "overrated because he is white" isn't exactly PC either.

The Jeffersons still comes on in tv and on Nick at Night and George still calls folks Honkies. Wonder why you aren't upset about that ATLVOLFAN?

UCONN: Clearly you don't understand and I will leave it at that because if anyone made those comments about someone close to you; then you would probably understand. I don't want to discuss racism with you because of my background I am finding this out of line, but Imus read a transcript he could have cleary change his mind before reading it. I see you have a different point of view, and this is not about Rutgers or UCONN this is about the Lady Vols. I think you should come up to date the Jefferson is nearly 20 years old. I have no problem with Bird, but their where lots of better players.

ATLVOLFAN, now wait just a minute. Don't just address that you "have no problem with Bird" address the racism you say exists. Spkke Lee was making a racist comment, he wasn't referring to Bird being just overrated...he was making a reference to his game based on race.

How is Don Imus wrong for making a comment about the girls lack of feminine qualities but George Jefferson can call white folks Honkies?

Racism goes both ways ATLVOL and its the attitude (intent) that propogates the problem. If you want true equality, then don't discount the struggles that others go through.

Don't play the race card if you can't admit to the injustices that are coming from BOTH sides.

Posted by marc_ash on January 26, 2008 at 5:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

ATLVOLFAN, I'm very disturbed by this comment you made:
"I think you should come up to date the Jefferson is nearly 20 years old."

First off, it is actually closer to 30 years old but that is a moot point. However, to suggest that because something is 20-30-50 or however many years old that it doesn't make a social impact is absolutely INSANE. I'm sure you wouldn't like me saying that slavery was 200 years ao and you should come up to date. That would be insensitive, disrespectful and downright ignorant.

I have a big problem with inequality and the comment you made offends me. Now, did you intend to offend? I don't know. But for you to suggest that racist comments happened "20 years ago and I should come up to date" is really insensitive.

Fact of the matter is there is a double standard here. Maybe you should ask how white people feel watching a show where they are being called honky.

20 years ago makes it not as important? Please.

marc_ash: I was not trying to offend anyone, but lets not flip the card. I never watch the Jefferson, and racism still do exist in this sick society. I have no problem with you coming with slavery being 200 years old, but I was not living during that point and time so I don't know what they went through. As for white people being call honky I never use that term in my life because I know what it feel like being call out of your name. Once again I did not try to offend you or any one else, I am not that type of person. Racism is what that team went threw and I dont care how anyone say it. They was judge by something on their skin not by basketball skills.

Come on Pat Head - don't worry about the fans long as your team's safety is ok. That's a bit petty. Don't drop Duke too - that would mean two of the better programs in women's b/ball you won't be playing.

Worry about your team not Duke's fans. Go Lady Vols - hope we don't shoot poorly.

No matter which side of this you're on... whether you agree or disagree with her... Coach Pat Summitt doesn't have to justify her decisions to anyone. This is no different than the decision not to continue the series with UConn. 7 National Championships, 26 SEC Championships, 16 Final Fours, 26 straight Sweet-Sixteens, a career record of 947-180 (.840), and - oh by the way - a 100% graduation rate among players who have played all four years for her. I repeat - Coach Pat Summitt doesn't have to explain herself to anyone!

nothing wrong with being proud of your team. Geno has drawn in great players over the years, such as Sue Bird or Diana T. Who the heck is dumb enough to argue his success at recruiting and coaching???

Geno has done something to really tick Pat off; I don't know what, I can only guess it has to do with 'inappropriate contact', but that is spcualation. Hopefully the reason is one that justifies Pat's anger.

I do NOT agree with her about the Duke fans. Good luck to your team, it's looking srtong even with the injuries.

This sounds unfair, but Chamique didn't have the advantage of Diana's upbringing. To me, that makes her accomplishments more amazing. Diana had a truely supportive, strong family, Chamique had questions.

What Pat is asking from Duke is to show good sportsmanship. Pat has always been fair, respects her opponent and is gracious in a win or a loss. She is not asking too much for her players to be treated with respect. Cheering for you team is one thing but to make a coordinated attack on a student athlete on national television is something else.

My best friend is a huge Duke fan and let me tell you, as a UNC guy (after the Vols) we get into it. I'm sorry, but I can't stand Duke. They get all the calls (men & women) and are always overrated. My dad & I joke that Wayne Chism would average 5-7 charges a game if he played for Duke. Duke fans are just rich, preppy kids who think they are better than everyone because they go to a "nice" college. It's just sad. Kudos to you Coach Summitt for standing up for your players.

Without UConn and Duke there goes our RPI and SOS? OMG ROTFLMAO That’s too freakin’ funny!

I think that UNC; Rutgers; Stanford; OK; WV; ODU; ND and TX and will take care of that! Playing VU twice; LSU; UGA; Auburn and Fl and doesn’t hurt either. Maryland, Baylor or Cal would LOVE to get a long-term home & home with us! They’d probably be happy with a 2 for 1. Eleven of our opponents are in the Top 25. UConn and Duke only play seven. Our RPI is #1 and so is our SOS. UConn is #2 in both and Duke is #11 in RPI and #14 in SOS.

The average RPI of our non-con opponents is 37.4 and UConn’s is 67.8. If UConn can be #2 in the RPI with only five decent non-con opponents every year while we schedule half of the Top 10 and half of the Top 25 then we should be just fine without either Duke or UConn. As long as we don’t schedule Stony Brook; Army and Holy Cross like UConn does every year, we won’t have anything to worry about.

Keep in mind that the SEC is uncharacteristically weak this year and the Big East is stronger than I’ve ever seen it; half of their 16 teams are decent for once! This is the toughest schedule that I’ve ever seen UConn play too; which isn’t saying a lot because their non-con and conference schedule is normally notoriously lame. They play 4 of the Top 10 and 7 of the Top 25 while we play 5 of the Top 10, 8 of the Top 15 and 11 of the Top 25.

Trust me, Pat isn’t worried about the bores from Storrs or Puke. Our world doesn’t revolve around them but the entirety of women’s basketball at every level depends on UT. Stop and think where high school, college and professional women’s basketball would be without Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols; remember 6 on 6 half-court ball? There would be no TV and no pro leagues other than club ball. If you don’t believe that then talk to ad executives, TV producers, college presidents and athletic directors as well as the marketing reps for the WNBA. The WNBA exists because of that lady on The Hill!

TN has only played 2 teams ranked in the top 10 and only 1 win to show for it. They are medicore at best when playing a top 10 team. Enough already about how great pat is. Geno is in the hall of fame (men & women). Pat has won a lot of games cuz she has coached forever. The game and recruiting has passed her by.

Ya’ll Pat is only 55! When did that become old?

She’s messing with Duke, jacking up the Lady Vols for a big game and getting a TON of national exposure for the “Big Monday” ratings!!! You people surely aren’t that naive to think that she hasn’t calculated exactly what she’s doing to the “T” are you? Try looking past the nose on your face. Pat is a tactical master! She doesn’t make a move without first understanding every possible outcome; Geez Louise! Sun Tzu didn't write The Art of War until after hanging out with the Lady Vols for a season.

You infantile nubs really want to compare coaches?

Auri-enema: 5 Titles; 639-120 for a winning percentage of .841; his post-season record: 61-14 for a winning percentage of .813.

Auerback: 7 Titles; 938-479 for a .662 winning percentage; his post season record: 99-69 with a .589 winning percentage; now look at his record from 1946-56!

Pat’s record: 7 Titles; 964-181 for a .842 winning percentage; her post season record: 98-19 for a winning percentage of .838.

No coach at any level or any sport can reach The Summitt!

Please, how ignorant can one person be?
“Play” and “played” have different definitions.
We have played OK, UNC and Stanford and will play Rutgers in two weeks.

UNC was ranked #3 when we beat them by 4 at home.
Stanford was ranked #4 when they beat us by 4 on the road.
OK was ranked #8 when we beat them by 3 on the road.
DePaul was ranked #12 when we beat them by 34 on the road.
WV was ranked #13 when we beat them by 18 on the road.
ND was ranked #14 when we beat them by 24 on the road.
Auburn was ranked #20 when we beat them by 33 at home.
TX was ranked #21 when we beat them by 25 at home .
ODU was ranked #24 when we beat them by 32 at home.

That’s 9 of our first 14 games have been against Top 25 teams with 2 of the Top 5; 3 of the Top 10; 6 of the Top 15; 7 of the Top 20 and 9 of the Top 25.

If the rankings were frozen today then we will play #4 Rutgers; #9 LSU; #10 Duke and #17 UGA.
13 out of our 29 games against Top 25 teams.

UConn played Stanford when they were ranked #6; Duke when they were ranked #11; WV when they were ranked #16 and UNC when they were ranked #3. ODU and Syracuse were unranked when UConn played them. UConn’s hasn’t had a road game against a ranked team this season.

Pat is 390-149 all-time for a winning percentage of .724 against Top 25 teams.
She started out as our Head Coach when she was 22 years old.

She just signed the #2; #6; #8 and #18 players in the country so I guess she still can recruit!
Last year she got:
Vickie Baugh: First Team All-American by USA Today, Parade Magazine, EA Sports and McDonald's
Angie Bjorklund: First-team All-America by USA Today, Parade Magazine and EA Sports McDonald's and WBCA All-American, AP and Gatorade State Player of the Year.
Kelley Cain: USA Today, WBCA, McDonald's and Parade All-American.
Sydney Smallbone: McDonald's All-American.

Our roster is full of them:
Cait McMahan: Street and Smith's, Parade, EA Sports and USA Today All-American .
Alex Fuller: WBCA, McDonald's, Street & Smith's, Nike, USA Today and Student Sports All-American
Nicky Anosike: Parade, McDonald's, Nike, Street & Smith's and Adidas All-American.
Alberta Auguste: WBCA Junior/Community College and Kodak All-American, nation's second leading scorer in the NJCAA
Shannon Bobbitt: Adidas, Kodak and McDonald's All-American, WBCA Junior/Community College Player of the Year.
Alexis Hornbuckle: WBCA High School Player of the Year, McDonald's, Parade, Street & Smith's, Nike, Student Sports, Adidas, USA Today First-Team All-America All-American.
Candace Parker: You gotta be kidding!

Question for zjcvols: If Duke gets "all the calls," then who gets the calls when Duke isn't playing?
A more serious question: If Duke truly gets "all the calls," why don't they win all the games?
If you do a true statistical analysis, you find out that Duke does not actually get "all the calls." Duke is one of the elite men's basketball programs and is trying to reach that same level with the women's program. Consequently, they get EVERYONE'S best shot. This means that their opponents are more physical than they might be otherwise. This results in Duke going to the line quite a bit, but the foul disparity is still not that great. In fact, believe it or not, it is quite often a disparity in the favor of Duke's opponents. This is the result of Duke having to raise the physical nature of their game.
Now, feel free to inundate me with anecdotal "evidence" that Duke gets "all the calls." Please don't forget to throw in the Gerald Henderson/Tyler Hansbrough incident just for good measure. Also, don't forget to use the last ditch, conspiracy theory argument that it isn't the number of fouls, but when they are called.
Honestly, if there was a cabal organized to ensure Duke supremacy, they would have at least one more men's NC. 1986, 1994, and 1999 were all down to the wire NC games in which Duke was the better/favored team. If there was ever a time to get "all the calls," it would have been one of those games.
Perhaps you aren't that old, but I can remember the same sort of things being said about UNC when Dean was in his prime. Believe me, he and UNC were as universally hated as K and Duke are today. When you are on top, everyone wants to knock you off, but few are capable of staying there for very long.

Come on Lady Vols I thought you all had thicker skin than that...I knew there was a reason I don't watch them. I wonder what Dearstone's excuse for this will be?

UconnFan, honestly, are you beyond the age of 12? Yes, Geno is 4-0 in NC games vs. UT. UT leads UConn in women's basketball NC's 7-5. Is there anything else on your mind? Honestly, at this point, you haven't shown a whole lot.

Come out of the basement and get a little sun; maybe you'll discover some perspective. You see junior, beyond women's basketball, no one associated with Tennessee gives UConn any thought at all. Period. You're just not relevant. In fact, on the national level UConn just doesn't matter. You're really trying in football, with your high school-like stadium but really son, no one cares.

And as someone who has been to Storrs many times, I can tell you this: It is one of the great pass-through towns in America. Again though, even your little town ----- no one cares. When discussion of great college towns comes around, you'll hear Knoxville, Ann Arbor, Chapel Hill, Madison, Austin..............yet no talk of Storrs.

Again, outside of women's basketball -- UConn just doesn't matter.

Now, put down the PlayStation controller, have dinner, take a bath and go to bed.

UConn fan -- yes the Duke LAX boys were innocent and Nifong is disbarred. That is exactly the point. The former LAX coach is now suing the University for their rush to judgement, and the DUKE academic community wnet on a witch hunt, calling for "justice" in the wake of the "outrage." When the truth came out, not one of those so-called intellectuals had the integrity to stand up and account for the danger of crucifying a kid based on accusation and social hysteria. Not one had the intellectual honesty to acknowledge their own role in laying to waste some kids' college experience, and that mob mentality can show its face in many ways. The holier-than-thou coward is an all too common academic archetype. So yeh, UConn -- the Dook community's shameful handling of the event is the issue for which they should wave LAX sticks. Now clam up and go clip Gino's nose hairs.

A big part of this craziness lies with the Duke administration. They have a high school or middle school size basketball court and students of about 7th grade maturity. The students are too close to the opposing players and while we all support students attending games of whatever sort, this rises to a level that is unacceptable. Beat us on the court, we go home. Go Pat, Go Vols.

UconnFan......you need to let it go, Geno had a stretch...that is it. The point your missing is, he had to beat Pat to get the NC, she makes it a habbit to be there, he does not. The players he is getting, other than the No. 1, did not fit the program at the time, playing time is everything. Geno will go down as one of UConns best coaches ever, Pat will go down at THE greatest Women's basketball coach. There is your difference, its not just about basketball, its about character...which Geno does not have. Having fans chant personal remarks at 18-20 year girls...might be classy up there, but not in the south.

Posted by GoVol on January 28, 2008 at 10:43 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The reason why Pat dropped the UConn series is because Geno started rumors that Pat was gay when Pat's whole divorce thing began.
If you've ever watched/listened to Pat's response as to 'why' she dropped the series, she takes the high road. She suggests to reporters that they actually ask Geno this question to see if he tells the truth.
We all know it would have to be something very personal for Pat to have dropped UConn because the competition was great for women's BB.
Maybe someday Geno will tell the truth, but I seriously doubt he would somehow become a person of class and morales.

I've gotta say...i disagreed with the cancellation of the UConn series, and I'd disagree with cancelling the Duke series. We're not coming to your gym if you say bad things about our players? well....NO road games then, because who doesn't? Tennessee fans yell crap at visiting teams in TBA. I think it's stupid, and sometimes I wonder if Pat thinks she's bigger than the game. To me, instead of cancelling the series (with Duke or UConn, no matter what Geno did or said...) you go up there and beat the crap out of him, and then beat the crap out of him again when he comes down here. Same with Duke. That's all I got.

The Vols are, unquestionably, the best program in Women's basketball history. Best coach, best program, best players, period. But if you don't want your players taunted for stealing from WalMart, don't recruit players that steal from WalMart.

A few years ago, UNC recruit JamesOn Curry got caught selling drugs at school. UNC pulled the scholarship. The Vols could have too--- that would be the best option for the storied program.

Could you imagine Coach K complaining to Maryland fans to stop calling Reddick some of the choice names used? Mentally tough basketball players, can not only tune it out, but thrive in the hostile environment. Perhaps Coach Pat could work with Hornbuckle on focusing on those things that she can control (her basketball skills) and less/no time concerning herself with things that she has absolutely no control over (i.e. what other people say to her) so that she doesn't have to wear ear plugs throughout life. Good life lesson about not running away from adversity and dealing with consequences of bad decisions.
