Tennessee senior Rubin Williams broke the meet record in the 60-meter dash Friday at the Penn State National in University Park, Pa.
The 12-time All-American broke the record with an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 6.65 seconds during the semifinals. Based on marks entering the weekend, Williams’ time stands as the third-fastest in the nation this season.
Williams did not run in the finals.
“This is the best Rubin has opened up at Tennessee,” UT coach Bill Webb said. “He ran well and we elected not to run him in the finals so that he will be better prepared for the 200 and 4x400 relay tomorrow.”
Sophomore Evander Wells was third in the finals at 6.72.
Michael Hogue finished second in the pole vault by clearing 17 feet, 3/4 inches.
Meanwhile, the Lady Vols won three events.
Junior Katie Van Horn won the invitational 5,000 for the second year in a row in an NCAA provisional qualifying 16:41.72.
Senior Courtney Champion won the 60 in 7.39 for her second consecutive title at the meet.
Running together for the first time ever, the distance medley relay quartet of junior Sarah Bowman, freshman Brittany Jones, sophomore Phoebe Wright and freshman Brittany Sheffey easily won in an NCAA provisional 11:13.64.
Women’s Tennis: The No. 22 Lady Vols tennis team will close out its season-opening, four-match homestand against Indiana (2-1) today and No. 49 Purdue (0-0) on Sunday. First serve versus the Fighting Illini is set for noon at the Goodfriend Tennis Center. The Lady Vols (2-0) take on the Boilermakers starting at 1 p.m. at the Knoxville Racquet Club.
