Coples knows UT needs defensive ends

Quinton Coples has seen how badly Tennessee needs him.

That happened when the defensive end from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., took an official visit to UT this weekend.

Coples said the UT coaching staff stressed that signing defensive ends is a high priority for the Vols' 2008 class.

"Being able to get out there and play early," Coples recalled from the staff's sales pitch. "They need defensive ends."

The 6-foot-7, 235-pound Coples said UT's need at defensive end should give him an opportunity to play early. He said that will play a role in his decision.

"It's a good factor," he said. "They stressed it real hard."

Coples was hosted by freshman defensive end Chris Walker. Coples said Walker and his teammates told Coples he could help the Vols' thin rotation at defensive end. The Vols lost two senior starters at defensive end, Xavier Mitchell and Antonio Reynolds, from last year's team

"They were very straight up and straight forward with me," Coples said. "They were cool like that. They were comfortable to be around."

Coples said he will choose between UT, North Carolina and Florida State. He has visited the Tar Heels and Seminoles.

Coples said he plans to announce his decision on National Signing Day on Feb. 6.

"I'll just look at the positives and negatives of the schools and then I'll analyze them," he said.

Quinton would be a great addition to the Vols lineup, and he'd have a chance to play early. It's a unique opportunity.

Remember the old saying "it ain't over till the fat lady sings"
We don't look good on paper right now but until a player signs his name he really has commited to nothing.
Lets hope for a strong finish.
Go Vols!!

6'7" 235...What two are looking to be our starters next year?...This kid looks a lot like Ben Martin.

Can this kid qualify? And you're right Dennis. A big whoop-dee-doo because we catch a 17-18 year old kid on the back end of his campus visit and he is all lite up about UT. Kinda like those Saturday nights after the frat party ... and then you turned over the next morning?

Won't know anything for sure until 2/6. But, then again, from what we hear about UT recruiting this year, we're begging headlines with non-qualifiers!

GerryOP 8:03- Its almost like pacing around a waiting room then realizing you left the wife at home. This could be Phil's finest hour if we get a top 30 class. I've never seen as much lurching around and great kids visiting and going elsewhere. I think we're in red-alert mode.

Hang in there, Vols.

Rumor is that he and E Davis may want to go to the same school. UT is the only one they're both considering.

Get the kids that want to be in Orange and all will be O.K.-- Stay away from the dumb arses! We seem to have plenty of them already, go VOLS!

A bright kid will figure otu that UT puts a TON of o- and d- linemen in the NFL.

The NFL loves the fact taht UT players have the basics dwon.

As I've said before, sometimes UT does things that help the kids more than helps the team win games. I can't argue with that. I'd want my kid going to a school where the coaches taught skills and preparation.

We are competing with UNC for 2 of our most prized recruits(Coples/Abrams Ward)...... LOL.

Butch Davis was a pretty good hire I guess.

I can't really judge how a player will play for the next four years. I'm sure everyone of the players in D-1 was chosen because someone (someone more qualified than me) thought that they could play at that level. The jury is out until they play, I did not think Bill Bates would retire as a Dallas Cowboy all-star. So in short the cream will always rise to the top.

Coples knows we need DEs, does Good Ol' Phil know this?

pdhuff 8:13, I'll light a taper and pray for Phil's finest hour. I'm expecting total implosion any minute! Go wake up your Lab. Phil wants to time his 40!

GerryOP -9:22 p.m. Old Ernie is a 10 year old AKC biscuit eater. His real name is Granville's Earnhardt Volunteer. His 40 time is affected greatly by a ham and biscuit. He weighs 112, but he can still motor. I'll tell him in the morning. How do you think he'll get along with Smoky? I wonder if he'll be affected by the spin.

At least UT's hiring.

sure they have their reasons it may make sense but just seems odd to me a defensive end vying for playing time would be the one assigned the role of hosting and encouraging a defensive end recruit that would compete with him for playing time ---its not like he can tout the new defensive end coach he hasnt yet played under

vol 1994's inside sources say Phil is surprised at the number of rejections. sphsvol, a major financial contributor, says his sources tell him to just wait .. we'll be shocked at the commitments who will defect and fall to the Vols on signing day. Even the inside sources can't get the story straight.

pdhuff (9:36), any pup with a name of Granville Earnhart Volunteer has to be a dang good hound! How much eligibility does Ol' Ernie have left? With a quick 40 and good vertical could make a decent DE. How is he at waving his paws and howling in parking lots?

By the looks of the posts tonight, spin's got a hold on everyone. Really anxious to see how many more non-qualifier commits we get. My stay up all night, or at least until 10:15, to see what happens. Peace bro.

did we lose fowlkes to arkansas????

Posted by dburgVol on January 27, 2008 at 10:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This guy is vastly underrated. Very athletic, rangy, and has the speed of a linebacker. Potential is off the charts. Too bad his Hargrave teammate, Leon Mackey passed on the Vols after he had them ranked no.1 and was about to commit in the fall. Coples's other teammate, Enrique Davis is someone that has a lot of interest in the Vols and they have talked about playing together. Would be nice to have them both. We need another young rb, in case Hardesty gets hurt again. Just think about Coples and Martin on the ends. Speed and power, sounds good. Now if we just had those DTs. I hope that shs_vol is including some high-profile DTs in his signing day decommiting roundup.

the kid from banneker, al davis the team mate of fowlkes commited to arkansas and arkansas is reporting they are in contention for fowlkes

Fowlkes is a project, he wont see the field for 3 years...hes only 215 right now. Coples is the better prospect, so are Gerald Williams and Austin Johnson for DE.

sjt18

Coples/Davis are also considering Florida State. I hope we can land both of them, they sure would help out quickly.

In reading sbout Davis it sounds like FLa St is his dream school.

6'7" 235 hope they wont turn him into a TE if he comes

Posted by sjt18 on January 28, 2008 at 2:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Davis was recruited by FSU out of HS and chose Auburn. I don't know what soured there or if it has changed. They are still a player from what I've read though.
