Vols, Lady Vols remain unbeaten in tennis

The 22nd-ranked University of Tennessee women's tennis team improved to 4-0 in dual-match play Sunday with a 6-1 victory over No. 49 Purdue at Knoxville Racquet Club.

"This was a huge confidence builder," UT co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick said. "Although it counts as a home match for us, this really helped to prepare us to go on the road since we didn't play at our normal home facility.

"We are very proud of how our team has progressed so far this season. They have gotten better each match and have been applying what they have learned in practice. We are still in the learning process, but we showed a lot of fight and heart today which bodes well for us in the future."

Unlike the day before, however, the Orange and White brought plenty of energy early in doubles play, cruising to a pair of wins to clinch the initial point of the match for the fourth time this season. Neither of UT's top two pairings needed a late comeback against Purdue, easily claiming victories in their respective matches.

UT took doubles, getting victories from sophomores Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor at No. 1, Ghizela Schutte and Rosalia Alda at No. 2.

The Lady Vols won five of the six singles matches with victories by Whoriskey, Schutte, Jennifer Meredith, Zubor and Alda.

The Lady Vols begin a month-long, six-match road trip next weekend, when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take on No. 21 Wake Forest.

Men's Tennis: Tennessee, ranked 22nd, improved to 4-0 with a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina-Wilmington and East Tennessee State at Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center.

The Vols came from behind to beat ETSU, 5-2, in the afternoon, then shut out UNC-W 7-0 in the evening.

"This was a good way to end the weekend," coach Sam Winterbotham said. "It was good to see everybody get a victory. UNC Wilmington came in here, competed hard and it was a good test for our guys. I'm pleased with where we are right now as a team and I think next weekend will be an even greater test for us."

"ETSU played a good match," Winterbotham said. "We knew it was going to be a challenge. I think the teams in this state get pumped up to play the University of Tennessee. To my guys' credit they answered the challenge and earned a good victory."

Tennessee improved to 20-0 all-time against ETSU.

The Vols will play host to No. 30 Clemson at 5 p.m. Friday.
