Several Tennessee football prospects are beginning to finalize their recruiting journey.
Sean Renfree committed to be David Cutcliffe’s quarterback of the future when the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale, Ariz. pledged to sign with Duke, according to Rivals.com.
Cutcliffe and the Vols showed lukewarm interest in Renfree before Cutcliffe and two other of UT’s offensive coaches left to become Duke’s head coach. Cutcliffe offered Renfree a scholarship soon after accepting the Blue Devils’ position.
Renfree is ranked as the tenth best quarterback in the nation according to Scout.com and the 15th best quarterback nationally according to Rivals.com.
Casey Kelly from Sarasota (Fla.) High School is thought to be the only quarterback still on UT’s board. The 6-2, 190-pounder is considered the 17th and 21st best prospect in the nation according to Rivals and Scout, respectively.
Defensive end Greg Scruggs from St. Xavier in Cincinnati, Ohio, told the News Sentinel that he is committed to Louisville. Scruggs also was considering UT, Michigan State, N.C. State and Wake Forest. He took his official visit to Knoxville on Dec. 7.
A.J. Alexander has committed to Florida State, according to warchant.com.
The athlete from Altoona (Pa.) High School originally committed to be a Seminole in May but opened up his recruitiment last fall. Alexander took official visits to UT, Pittsburgh and North Carolina.
All commitments are non-binding until prospects sign with a school on National Signing Day is Feb. 6.
Defensive end Jomarcus Savage from J.O. Johnson High School in Huntsville, Ala., will announce his college decision at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Savage said he will choose between Tennessee and Auburn at a press conference at his high school.

I hope so, but these guys werent really ever that high on our charts. I will be surprised if Savage doesnt pick UT. Wouldnt it be ironic if we signed like 7 D-linemen and all these guys that have been yelling DL! DL! would have to find something else to gripe about. We want Coples period, he is gonna be a freak. Coples and Martin on the ends would be real nice.

VolCR reinvented as StayTheCourse, how hilariously original. Did you get the boot again or just decide you wanted to show more of your alleged creativity? I guess it's not the latter since you went with the tired yawn of old.

Flustered, not so much. As I am now, I confirmed that I was wrong. At the time, I thought that it was much ado about nothing. I was wrong. Saying that BJ Coleman is a good player is not the same as having a man crush. I know that clever lines like that will get you the attention you desperately crave, but their as erroneous as my post about Ainge. Everyone makes mistakes and can say something that turns out to be inaccurate. I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again, the difference is that I can admit that and you can't.
As for not being able to wait to tell people your name, if I learned it in October and just now said it, obviously I could wait. I know that you think you're hilarious, brilliant and always correct, but you're wrong. That's the most erroneous position of all by anyone on this site.

VolCR said: "Not enough room for 10-12 more guys on top of what we have publicly committed at this point plus Morley and Warren."
So you don't know? So you are talking out your ear right?
There's error number two today.
Posted by sjt18 on January 29, 2008 at 4:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)
"Back to the 10-12 numbers myth of sphs_vol, we currently have 71 players returning to the team this year counting Gaines, Morley, and Warren. Then you add the 14 current commits (including Floyd) that leaves us at 85. Now, some guys will not qualify (some say Hughes won't), that still will probably leave only a few slots left, not 10-12. I could see us oversigning by a few knowing some guys won't qualify but we will not sign 10-12 more before signing day."
Error number 3 by my count and I'm not even trying. That 71 HAS to include the walk ons or else UT cannot sign anyone else... which obviously isn't true.
Posted by bigbluevol on January 29, 2008 at 4:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)
No, I don't care whether I'm right or wrong about it. I know you do. It doesn't matter to me whether you have one name or 3. What I do have a problem with is when you get on here and make negative statements in order to provoke arguments. Then you resort to name calling and mocking and act like you're the smartest guy around, all the while doing it anonymously and with unwarranted vitriol. You could argue respectfully, but you choose not to go that route. That's fine. The only thing I don't understand is why, if you hate Fulmer and his ways so much and you're so convinced that the program is in dire straits, do you spend so much of your time being negative about it? Why don't you focus your interests elsewhere? And, if you won't do that, why don't you just try to be positive and respectful with other people?

TJ, bring the room to order. We've got to get started on Renfree and Scruggs. Pound the Tide!
Posted by sjt18 on January 29, 2008 at 4:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)
VolCR, whatever the number is, it is NOT 14 which is what your math says it has to be. You can't sign 8-10 more players than you have scholarships for...
Just keep it up... this could be fun.
Companies have spent millions based on my math. I'm not above mistakes... or learning from them... but it isn't a weakness.
There's mistake number 4 btw for you. My error with Fisher wasn't the math... I was wrong about when he came to UT. I was thinking last year instead of the year before.
Posted by bigbluevol on January 29, 2008 at 4:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)
From the Bohannon, Waggner article:
"UT is expected to sign between 20 and 24 prospects this year."
Since Hughes is probably going to JC or Prep, that's one less they will have on scholly this season. Warren and Morley might not get scholarships for this year. If UT is expected to sign that many, as Hooker said, obviously there will be a numbers crunch in some way. Similar to last year's. Hooker hopefully did not just make that estimate up.
Posted by sjt18 on January 29, 2008 at 4:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Oh... VolCR, if the number is 16 rather than 14... it still counts as an error.
The only way UT can take more is if they are all sign and place 8-10 kids which is fairly unlikely.
Error #5: You included Johnson and Poole with the Freshmen. They are early enrollees but Fr and members of the 2008 class with respect to recruiting and eligibility...
See how fun nitpicking is?
Posted by sjt18 on January 29, 2008 at 4:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)
bigblue, those are the estimates I've seen since the summer. 20-24.
Posted by sjt18 on January 29, 2008 at 4:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Error number 6, I didn't say it had to include walk-ons... I said: "That 71 HAS to include the walk ons or else UT cannot sign anyone else... which obviously isn't true."
Error number 7: 16+19+19+16 = 70... not 71. You must be a buffoon that can't add.
Of course the Freshman class doesn't include the early enrollees yet so it should be 14 anyway/

Cutcliffe isn't a complete idiot. He only gave this kid a 'luke warm' interest while at TN. Cutcliffe knew all along he wanted this kid at Duke and also because he has the grades to make it. Pretty good that he can get a top 10 or 15 QB prospect to commit to Duke.
Posted by auttat on January 29, 2008 at 4:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Error #8, Chattanooga is spelled with 2 t's.
Error #9, "...you've accusing..." needed a "been" between it.
Just tyring to help sjt18.
I don't think it helps, though. All the attention on the idiot, good or bad, seems to feed his hunger.
Posted by DennisVols on January 29, 2008 at 4:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Funny that some don't believe the negative post can effect recruiting but just this past season they believed those same negative comments could persuade MH to fire Fulmer.
Kind of selective in that train of thought don't ya thing?
I know if I was a coach for a competing team in the recruiting war I would use every negative thing I could find about the universities I was up against to convince a kid and his parents I had a better more stable program for him to commit to.
That is one of the oldest sales techniques used in today’s market to make your competitor look less qualified than you are at meeting their needs.
I'm not say this is happening but the opportunity is there just like using the news stories of drugs and drinking, and failing grades.

Just out of curiousity. You say that Mallet would have had to sit out 2 full years if he had left Michigan early. Does that mean Warren has to sit out next year as well? If so, will the school put him on scholarship and redshirt him, or does he have to walkon?
All wise and knowing one, please humble me with your intelligence.

Posted by sjt18 on January 29, 2008 at 5:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)
VolCR is wrong again about the transfer rule. A player can transfer with permission and play after sitting out 1 year. Michigan granted Mallett such a release.
I am not entirely sure whether VolCR is right about an early enrollee getting a years credit if they transfer without a release to avoid sitting out two years.
That has been part of the problem with Warren. FSU has resisted giving him a release so he's had to appeal to the NCAA.

auttat ,Mallett was given a release by Michigan , so he only has to sit one yr.If Mich would have refused the transfer, and he left in the middle of a semester he would have had to sit for 2 yrs.Warren left FSU in the middle of a semester after FSU refused to release him.Warren then filed for a hardship w/ the ncaa , but was turned away w/ the ncaa upholding the FSU ruling citing there was no reason for a medical hardship b/c his mother had gotten better. However, he won an appeal last fall, releasing him from his FSU commitment.UT now has to file for the hardship for Warren when he enrolls in UT this summer.Until then there can be no contact beetween him and the UT staff. It is thought he will get the hardship b/c he was released from his commitment, therefore not in violation of ncaa rules by leaving mid-semester.

Renfree (from what I understand)was told by Cut himself that he didn't quite fit in w/ the Vols , and to pursue other opportunities.Cut may have liked him ,but thought UT had better options over the next 4-5 yrs.But at Duke he may very well be the best option for Cut.He does look like a good athlete.36" vert, 4.5 40,4.38 shuttle.Must have been a arm strength question. With the lack of talent ,maybe Cut will go to the spread.

Good call dennis! I knew I'd better think of something pretty quick, so I reached out and kicked ol' green teeth right in the knee.

The scholarship is the thing that is only a year long. Transfer rules are different. If a school will not grant a release for transfer (regardless of when the request is made) the player has to sit the 2 years. This is very rare, but it does happen. If a school grants a release, the player has to sit the one year unless he goes to 1AA or lower.
Sometimes teams grant conditional releases. For example, Fulmer could grant a release on the condition that he goes to a school not in the SEC or that they play.

I don't post often but have been reading this site for several weeks, as I am a Vol's fan for life. It is fruitless for sjt18 to try to corner Volcr as he has a personality disorder called narcissism and dosen't have the ability to admit a mistake or that he is wrong. Just an unsolicited opinion.
Go Vols!

In my opinion, UT needs this class of minimal stars more than they need the high profile recruits. It will be interesting to watch the maturation of this recruiting class moreso than the others. It seems the high profile recruits wash out moreso than the guys that have to hustle to keep up. We'll see

Sorry Dennisvols. Someone was posting with my screen name... couldn't be VolCR though... he/she/it is way too mature for that... you can tell it from all his other posts. LOL.

VolCR and I have one of these every so often. He/she/it can't tolerate someone who disagrees with them... and I have a hard time letting the delusionally pessimistic slide with their constant griping and complaining.
I'm working on it though. If Balaam could learn from a talking one... maybe I should listen to folks like VolCR.

So, of qbs that we DO have, with Crompton the only one that I have seen much of in game action ... who has stronger arm, Stephens or Coleman?
Posted by sjt18 on January 30, 2008 at 10:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I've read that Stephens has the strongest arm at UT since at least Shuler. It has been reported also that all three have at least as much if not more arm strength than Ainge though others dispute that.

Thanks for response; sounds hopeful that we could be throwing deep a little more.

What have you heard pd?
I've seen that Wadley and/or Henderson could end up DT's in college. TDTN's suggestion of Dareus would be nice but I think that's a long shot.
I still think that could end up being the best position for Aaron Douglas in college.
If UT doesn't sign a couple of potential DT's for next year out of this class then they'll be dependent on both Hall and Sykes making it back from JUCO. Otherwise they'd have to find an immediate impact Freshman or uncommitted JUCO.
Did you see where Rivals and Scout now have Hughes rated? Rivals gave him 2*. If he does well in prep/JUCO, he could return higher than that.

I doubt there's much question that Clawson will want to throw deep more. I believe he made some comments to the effect that they want to stretch the field with the passing game to compliment the run game... and vice versa, he might want to get a consistent run game to open up the passing game.
Whether because of Ainge's injuries or Cut's choice, relying so heavily on the short game couldn't have helped the running game. The D benefited from playing guys close to the LOS against both.

PD, I quit asking for DT's. I am afraid we will get what we ask for and it will be the other kind of DT's. Is there any crossover there if I use DL's?

Cut is dead to me. This whole shaddy exit deal with coaches and recuits sucked. I tink gib Phil gave him the go ahead to help him out.
I hope he goes winless in 3 years and gets booted to the Duke door.

Hey thesavageorange, you couldn't deliver another savage to us??? Geez!

utmdm-11:21 a.m.- I'm afraid there's no substitute for the real thing. Phil tried to go without DTs in 2007 and we crested at 11th in the conference in D. But we keep recruiing DBs.
RC is drinkable, but a cold Coke is much better. In my humble opinion. Beat MSU.
