Arkansas hands Mississippi State 1st SEC defeat

South Carolina, Ole Miss, LSU score victories

Barry Stewart, left, of Mississippi State and Steven Hill of Arkansas dive for a loose ball during the Razorbacks' upset of the Bulldogs on Wednesday at Fayetteville, Ark.

Sonny Weems scored 22 points and Patrick Beverley 19 as Arkansas snapped Mississippi State's nine-game winning streak, 78-58, Wednesday night at Fayetteville, Ark..

The Bulldogs (14-6, 5-1 SEC) - who will play host to Tennessee on Saturday - had been the only SEC team without a league loss, but they turned the ball over 22 times against the Razorbacks, leaving coach Rick Stansbury still a win short of 200.

Arkansas (15-5, 4-2) moved a game back of the Bulldogs for the lead in the SEC West. Mississippi State hasn't started 6-0 in league play since the 1960-61 season.

The Bulldogs went scoreless until Jarvis Varnado's free throw 4:31 into the game. Jamont Gordon scored Mississippi State's next 10 points, including a dunk and two 3-pointers, for an 11-7 lead.

That was only a brief setback for Arkansas' scrappy defense. The Razorbacks went on a 14-0 run and led comfortably for the rest of the half. Weems highlighted the streak with three 3-pointers.

Beverley finished the half with 14 points and Arkansas led 43-28.

Mississippi State cut the deficit to single digits in the second half, but the Bulldogs were too careless with the ball to mount a serious rally. Gordon led the team with 24 points, and Charles Rhodes finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

Varnado blocked four shots, giving him 101 for the season.

Mississippi 74, Vanderbilt 58: Chris Warren scored 20 points and Eniel Polynice 18 as the No. 24 Rebels' freshmen had one of their best games of the season in an SEC game at Oxford, Miss.

Freshmen scored 18 of Ole Miss' first 26 points in the pivotal opening minutes of the second half as the Rebels (16-3, 3-3 SEC) snapped a two-game losing streak and sent the No. 19 Commodores (17-4, 2-4) to their fourth loss in five games.

The win snapped a six-game losing streak to Vanderbilt and helps the Rebels remain in the SEC West race behind Mississippi State.

Another slow start doomed Vanderbilt. The Commodores trailed the Rebels 29-26 at halftime. It was third time in the four losses they failed to reach 30 points in the first half.

Shan Foster led Vanderbilt with 14 points.

South Carolina 62, Georgia 56: Zam Fredrick scored 23 points and the Gamecocks held the Bulldogs' top two scorers in check to win at Columbia, S.C.

Devan Downey hit three of four free throws in the final 21.7 seconds for South Carolina (10-10, 2-4 SEC).

South Carolina held Billy Humphrey and Sundiata Gaines, each of whom averaged better than 13 points a game, to 12 points combined.

The Bulldogs (11-7, 2-3) never led, and trailed by as many as 11 in the first half. But Georgia went on a 13-4 run over the final 4:33 of the half to trail 26-24 at the break.

South Carolina scored 12 in a row early in the second half to lead 42-28. But the Bulldogs scored seven in a row to cut their deficit to 55-51 with 1:27 left.

Downey, the SEC's leading scorer averaging 20.1 points, was held to a season-low nine points on 3-of-10 shooting. Dominique Archie scored 13 points for Carolina.

LSU 81, Auburn 80: Marcus Thornton hit a 3-pointer with 3.8 seconds left and scored 38 points as LSU won at Auburn.

Thornton drained his eighth 3 of the game over Auburn's Lucas Hargrove from the left wing for LSU (8-12, 1-5 SEC).

LSU snapped its 15-game road skid.

Anthony Randolph scored 21 for LSU. Quan Prowell led Auburrn with 26.

With State coming on strong as of late, this loss prior to TN will get them plenty motivated to take care of business on their home court. The VOLS will have to do what they did at AL, which is take it right at them and don't let up. If we don't hold our own with the boards and only 1 of Tyler, Chris or JuJuan is on their game, we could be in for a very long night. The VOLS will not only have to keep this in mind, but to also remember that MS will like all other SEC teams right now...the motivation to take down the league's top team. GO VOLS!!

Oh Yes...KU lost tonight, which will help UT better position itself for a # 1 seed (that is if we take down Memphis).

IIRC, Arkansas has young guards who are wildly inconsistent. Clearly they were at the top of their game last night. When they aren't, the Hogs can indeed lose to an Appy St. There are pretty good players and teams everywhere. Seldom has the expression that begins, "on any given night..." been more true.

Thanks Hogs, now lets give MSU its second SEC loss to built momentum for the game against the retard gator nation on our trip to a SEC title!

I believe that I would rather have seen MSU undefeated when the Vols come a calling. I'm a big believer in momentum and mindset in basketball. I would rather face them thinking they are the greatest thing since bread, than them knowing that there is work to be done to earn respect. Let's hope that respect is not earned at the Vol's expense. Go Vols
